I have one - too heavy for one-handed use, IMO - really need to rest it on something. With no camera and no USB port, I find it not very useful for anything more than e-mail, casual web browsing, and a couple of games. The NetFlix app is cool, I just wish their streaming library was larger. Outside of testing our software (what I use it for 75% of the time), I just grab it to check e-mail/browse when I don't feel like pulling my laptop out of my bag and starting it up. I would never buy one with my own $$$, that's for certain. I'd rather purchase a netbook for much less or spen a little more and go with a Lenovo x200 tablet PC.
What are you wanting to do with it? Like Lee says, tablets are very limited.

Mostly browsing net. Some music maybe reading electronic books. Whatever will keep me sane for 4 or 5 am feedings.
I would get a cheap netbook and an e reader for slightly more than the cost of the cheapest ipad. I cant speak highly enough about the current batch of e readers, ive had both a kindle and a nook, and love them both, plus the nook has internet capabilities, although it is very limited.

bought 1 for z, cuz she wanted a reader. i figure it's nice reader and then some
she's really likes it, and she was anti-mac before we bought it
april really likes it too, and there are alot of good "lesson" type games on there
we found it very useful traveling and looking for things on the road.
sure it's basically an itouch w/ a huge screen.
i had even ordered a 2nd one and sold it for $75 more then i paid lol

My wife loves hers, While I find it a fun Gadget, I am holding off. My cheap little acer netbook handles all the same tasks. (The Acer does lack the nifty touch screen) I am waiting to see some of the competing products.

I would hate trying to surf the net on an iPad, as you're just not getting the whole internet.
Save a ton of money and pick up a much more useful netbook.

It doesn't even have a USB port? Mega ghey.
I actually got to try one recently when I was shopping for computer parts. They are complete pieces of crap. No multitasking, no usb, and they dont do anything a small netbook cant do. It has even less features then the Iphone, which is pathetic considering its a comp, and not a phone. Not to mention its incapable of using a lot of standard i-net features.
Frankly, its a complete waste of 800$, and you can find far better deals on mini laptops that do way more then that POS.
I'm personally waiting until Amazon makes a kindle that can surf the net before I consider any kind of tablet device.

Except for the most important feature of an ebook reader. The display. I can read from my kindle for hours on end with no eye strain because of no backlighting and can read it outside in bright sunlight with no problems at all. An ebook reader acts just like the page of a book.

I'm an iPhone user, and like it a lot.
That said, I'd buy a Windows netbook over an iPad any day of the week. It's less expensive and more capable.
Even a high end netbook will be quite a bit less than an iPad.

is it as capable as a laptop, no, but then if we need all the capabilities of a laptop we bring it.

That's just part of the issue with flash. The big issue is control. He wants HTML5 to replace flash.
Allowing flash would allow people to bypass Apple ToS and be able to play apps through flash and not have to worry about the app store any longer. Which could also introduce security risks and other buggies. It all comes down to control in the end. He wants it over his devices.

Very true! I still think that the op will enjoy it if she gets it. My friend that got one is selling hers, she's tired of it already. She has a Droid and says that she doesn't bother to waste the time it takes to get her i-Pad out. I'm not making this up. Also, her biggest complaint is the obvious one, very little 3G coverage here from ATT...I told her to wait until she gets Froyo, then she can tether her i-Pad to her Droid to surf the net.
I do have one question though... I have an app that was free and makes available thousands of books for free. Can you get that from a Kindle, Nook or i-Pad? Or are you stuck paying their fees? If so anyone getting an i-Pad for a reader should look at all of that too.
note- looks like there are plenty of services that charge a one time free (about $50) for unlimited downloads. Pretty cool.

I've got an iPad, and it'd be perfect for the midnight feedings. I wasn't quite sure how much I'd be using it before I got it, but if I've got it and the laptop at home, I'll pick up the iPad about 90% of the time. It's also a whole hell of a lot more convenient on the airplane. It's mostly about entertainment for me. Any serious work gets done on the laptop.

Well I have decided to hold off on any major purchase for the time being, I will live with surfing the net one handed on my iphone at 4 am, ugh. Felt guilty for wanting to spend the money on something for myself when I am on maternity leave and only bringing home a 3rd of what I was before. Sometimes I hate being so responsible. Got my tax refund which went straight into savings and sold my bike and that went straight into another savings account in case of emergencies this year. sigh,, why can't I just splurge on myself once in a while? Hell I even felt guilty about buying maternity clothes! ( what the hell did I think I would wear to work if I didn''t, I don't know)

Not sure but heavy enough that you get tired of holding it with one hand very quickly. I think it has a bit to do with the size of it as well. And it's not just me. I was watching people at our show hold it when they were checking out our software running on it. They all did the same thing I find myself doing - constantly shifting it around and holding it different ways, trying to find a comfortable way to hold it....which you never do, until you prop it on your lap or a desk top, table top, etc.

The gesture based operating system becomes very intuitive very quickly. (enough so that that is I have been using the wifes I Pad and move over to my netbook I have caught myself touching touching the screen) I would agree there really isn't a comfortable way to just hold it. My wife loves hers, but the lack of flash really does limit it great deal. Add to that the lack of a USB or card reader and the convenience of the touch screen is quickly outweighed by its limits

From a quick web search, it doesn't sound like the iPad's bluetooth setup will support audio in. Figures. :lol
You can already use Skype with wifi on pretty much everything else (computer, smartphone, etc.), and I've never seen anyone doing that on an airplane.
I used to use Skype on my PSP, worked great! >$3 per month.:rockwoot:

Seems like if someone was willing to pay that much money for an iPad, they'd want 4G (Sprint or Verizon), not shitty AT&T 3G service.

will prolly be getting that early next yr, when my contract is up for renewal (sprint)
may use the "hot spot" feature and do away w/ the AT&T service
saw an article recently that sums it up
the ipad is not a must have, but i'd miss it if we didn't have it.
still use it almost as much as when we first got it, and Z loves playing scrabble against her friends, so much so that she added a scrabble game to her droid phone.
