Who gives a shit if he had tats? Now Wayne County Sheriffs a while back got pentagrams tattoo'd on their ass with their badge number, at least that is what this tattoo artist told me - that might show a slight indication towards sadomasochism.. Ever seen pulp fiction? Well get pulled over by one of these fuckers and you will leave that scene.. Red rubber ball bitch..

I have no issue with tats. My problem is with a uniformed officer of the law having visible ones. Visible STUPID ones. Highly unprofessional

In the town where my brother is a P/O one of the guys who is an officer with him has sleeve tats from when he was a green beret. When he got hired they said it was regulation that you could have no tats where the uniform stopped, so now he has to wear an Under Armour tan long sleeve under shirt to hide them.

What exactly is unprofessional about having a tattoo on your arm when millions and millions of people have tattoos?
This is the same bullshit as the school telling my kid he can't have a mohawk because it makes kids mean. Or how people used to look down on guys that wore black leather jackets. We just need to let that superficial bullshit go already.

It's unprofessional because a rather large segment of the population views it as being unprofessional. In a position like police officer, in which the person has to interface with a very broad range of citizenry, that means it isn't acceptable.
It's nothing like the school telling you that your kid can't have a Mohawk. It's very much like the school telling the TEACHER that he can't have a Mohawk.

We judge people on their appearance, every day of our lives. To not admit this is hypocrisy.
That doesn't mean we should accept it and take it to extreme cases, like deciding who is employable and who is not. What matters is that cop's personal ability to do the job. In fact, I bet in his line of work, the tattoo helps him better relate to people and allows him to interact with portions of the community that he otherwise might not be able to so easily.
For example, the small town I grew up in had a cop with an eagle tattoo on his forearm. We all thought it was cool when we were 13, and he used to show it off and use it as an ice breaker. Little known to us, while he was using that tattoo as a conversation piece he was also making mental notes of who we were and what we were up to. Goddamn prick was the first to write me a speeding ticket,
I'm reading another article on the Star Telegram about Six Flags denying entry to certain people based on their tattoos, or forcing them to cover the tattoos. Again, completely absurd. If you don't like the tattoo, don't fucking look at it.
Lets judge people for something more important, like being a fucking lazy fat ass....there's plenty of fat lazy people to hate on, and their condition is far more harmful to society than tattooing.
Papa_Complex
07-05-2010, 05:28 PM
A tattoo might let him better interface with a certain portion of the population. Unfortunately his job isn't that limited. We aren't talking about a regular citizen here. Appearance is used as a mental short form for what's beyond the book's cover. Someone in a position of authority has to project that.

If it's OK to turn down a job candidate because of the way they're dressed, then it's OK to do it because of a tattoo.
Besides, if you really wanted that job, you could have had your tat removed. Or you could have put it on a part of your body that isn't visible under work clothes. Or just not get one in the first place. Therefore it can't be compared to discriminating against people because they are Black or 60 years old. They can't do anything about that. You can.

If I could hide a 4 diameter displacement collarbone break and the associated pain while interviewing for my present job, then you would think that someone would be able to cover up a sleeve.

Im kinda on the side of it being unprofessional. I've got tats, and I love them, but I also made the decision to get them in places I can easily cover up because as cool as they are, they arent professional and like someone else said, people get judged on appearance. I also refrained from getting the ones I REALLY want because they arent professional. Like on the back of my neck, on top of my foot, my wrist, etc.
I would be 100% more likely to have greater trust in an officer who looks like a professional officer of the law, than in someone covered up with tats who threw on a uniform.
Training: Dudes already got the job. Doesn't matter at that point.
No, they don't. Cops do a basic training type deal before they get hired. Its very possible to get through the thing and be fully trained and certified and NOT get a job.
