View Full Version : So I just went to the DMV to renew my DL...

I had these forms of ID with me...

1. My expired DL. (untampered and brand new looking)
2. My s.s. card.
3. My voter ID card.
4. Current Power bill.
5. Current water bill.
6. Current car insurance card.
7. 3 Current vehicle registrations.
8. Current cable bill.
9. COPY of my birth certificate. (I have no idea where the original from Mass. is)

All addresses match the expired DL as I've lived here for 15 years. I was told because there was no state seal on my birth certificate there was nothing that could be done, despite the fact that I had 11 valid forms of current ID.

I just spent an additional $50 to have a fresh "official" copy of my birth certificate shipped down. Then I get to spend an additional 2 hours at the DMV again...good times.:gofurslf:

Um, I don't get it... don't you have to renew your license periodically in Fla? What happened last time you got your license? Is it because you waited until after your current license expired? Heck, I was in and out in 20 minutes here in NC getting a license from scratch. If you weren't up for a retest, you could renew your license over the phone/by mail in Mi.

Where in Mass? Geez, I must lose my birth certificate yearly. I don't remember how many times those good people in Framingham have sent me an original. I think I may have paid $5 ONCE. Come to think of it...where the hell is that thing...

Every 5 years. I didn't know it was expired until my insurance company called me to let me know they needed a current copy of it. I renewed my tags a week before my birthday and it didn't occur to me and none of the helpful souls at the DMV felt the need to remind me.

The last time I renewed it I walked in with my old ID and two forms of address. It took 5 minutes. When you give them your name, your picture comes up on their computer screen. It's pretty fucking hard to fake.

I guess all this new drama started at the first of the year...:td:

A couple of years ago they changed the laws here and made it a real pain in the ass... Interestingly enough I could replace my existing license with an updated address online for $30 and very little proof that I am who I say I am... Seems like a pretty fucking ridiculous 'security' if you ask me...

Yeah, they just changed shit this year up here, too. You're required to take in all sorts of shit if you want the new "secure" id. However, the majority of people (I think I heard it's above 70%) are opting for the non-secure id. I think the difference is the "secure" id has a bunch of your personal information encoded on the barcode on the back so your id can simply be scanned to prove it's real or some shit.

In Michigan, if your DL is new and fresh with your ugly mug, it expires in 5yrs but at that time you can renew via mail, phone, or net for 4 years. So then after 9yrs you must go back in the Secretary of State (Michigan's version of the dmv) and get your new freshly updated picture DL.

Rice, Why couldn't you do it online?

I just renewed mine in June (4 days after my b-day) online with no issues.

florida's "dmv's" are privately run. they're freakin disasters. i remember trying to go, and getting there about 30 minutes before they opened. there was already a "line" of non-english speakers 50 people deep. many didn't understand (or maybe just didn't care?) that lines are supposed to have some sort of order.

I know in VA it sucks ass.

They charge you if you do anything in person now.

So I did my license renewal by mail, and since I had a new address I marked the box that said "new address" and filled out all the info

2 weeks later I get my license in the mail with my address looking like they played scrabble with both addresses. :skep:

I call and they want me to pay even more for them to fix their fuck up. Told I can go online and do this also.

Go online fill out a bunch of shit, then they send a message saying they will send you a pin number to your house (by snail mail) so you can access the account you had to sign up in order to change stuff around. :?: They don't ask for your address, they go off your license number and use the address you have on their file.

I never got my pin number, (no kidding the address they made up didn't exist) and sent them an email asking them how they planned to get it to me when their screw up with my address is the problem to start with.

Yeah, sounds like a bunch of panicked assholes trying to be "secure", when they have no clue how to even begin to do so.

In the end, no one is more secure, everyone is just more fucking hassled.

I actually was sent home to get a business card to "prove" that I worked for my own company (for which I am sole proprietor of, and share address with), when, of course, anyone could buy some fucking Avery card stock, and pull a Jim Rockford.

The fact that I had a document delivered to me by the USPS was apparently LESS VALID than something out of my printer.

I love how its all women that work at the DMV. It's even better when they're real bitches and think they has some kind of authority. I'm never on time paying for my state tag. They're get their money when I feel like paying. Even if your a few months late you still have to pay the full amount. It's not like they're losing any money off of you. Usually they'll just ask if you gotten any tickets for expired tags and I just say its been in the garage. Ever so often I'll get an old hag talk to me like I need to get in line for the firing squad. Bitch! You work behind a counter and type. GFYS!

The cool think is the tag starts when you pay it and doesnt revert back to when you should have. :rockwoot:

It doesn't work that way here. The registration expires at the end of the month the registered owner was born (technically on their birthday). It doesn't matter when you renew it, the expiration doesn't change. They also increase the registration fees if someone renews more than a couple weeks after their previous registration expires.
