View Full Version : Scavenger Hunt: Need a big plastic saucer...

So I'm making some paper mache shields for my son and step-son to have Spartanesque fights to the death with in the living room. I'm using garbage can lids to reinforce, and that's pretty much the perfect size...
But now I'm wanting to get in on the action. I'm trying it with chickenwire stretched over a papasan to get a close enough shape , but I don't think that's going to be strong enough. I wanna be able to knock these little bastards on their ass.
I need a plastic frame, about 3", in a saucer shape. The only thing I've found so far is a large saucer sled, which is cool, but I don't wanna drop $50 on a sheet of plastic.
Any ideas on how to make a strong 3" paper mache Spartan shield?

Fiberglass?
Well, I supposed if I had the means to form it into a concave shape that would be perfect. Can't do it though..

Not nearly big enough. Needs to be round, 3" diameter....maybe they make a bigger platter though...

I think you mean 3', not 3". 3" is 3 inches.

Bullshit. Take your chicken wire and press it into the Papasan chair. Take the fiberglass material and wrap the outside of the chicken wire. Paint the material with the resin. Let dry. Kick MFin ass.

Redneck ingenuity
Bondo with fiberglass matte would be easy to apply to the chicken wire. Get some at your local auto parts store.
Just get him the lifesize replica

That's only 2' though. Still, not as much fun as building our own.

Glad to hear that your stepson is up and around, playing, and back to being a kid.

Yea, I need to go to that thread and post an update. They just told him Friday that he's got another month in his brace at least, so he was pretty disappointed, still...he is getting back to being a kid for sure. Constantly beating the hell out of me, he uses that brace like armor.
His lil' bro is going to be blind though it looks like. =(

Good to hear man, you have been in my thoughts.

That's awful, and let's hope that's not the case. I'll be pulling for the little guy.

Did you get the answer to this yet?
Fiberglass comes in a cloth weave. It hardens with a resin that coats it.
You can make almost any shape out of it.
Not my pics but they sum it up:

That. You lay the material on your structure and paint it with resin. How good of a finished product will be up to you. You can sand it and paint it.

That's badass for sure...but how would I create a 3' saucer out of it? I still need something to mold it into.

Find a cable spool, whack one of the "wheels" off it, sand it to shape, then lay your material over it as a form.

Use your Papasan chair covered with Saran Wrap: Instant mold.
