The China traffic jam thread got me thinking...

Who else has noticed a SIGNIFICANT increase in traffic since school started?

All the schools around here have started back in the last two weeks and my commute time (7 miles all local) has doubled. There seems to be 3x's as many cars on the road.

This is not kids/parents going to school. I don't go through a single school zone on my drive.

Who are all these people that have decided to return to the roads now that the kids are back in school? What were they doing all Summer?

Schools here don't start until 9/7. But there is always an increase in traffic around the time school starts. I chalk it up to parents adjusting their work schedules or stay at home moms running morning errands since there are no kids at home.

Anyone else notice that around this time of year it gets darker earlier and it gets a little colder?

School hasn't started here yet either but traffic always increases as a result of the busses on the road (we don't have a lot of walkers around these parts)

I leave the house right as the buses hit my neighborhood. I don't have a long drive to the train station so it doesn't bother me that much. Worse case scenarion is I miss my normal train and have to catch the next one 10 minutes later.

Unless its a retard bus or a cripple mobile.
Then I just hang back and make faces.

Today was the first day of school in the county I work in so we left 15 minutes early because traffic gets worse this time of the year every year. It actually wasn't noticable today so tomorrow will be 10 minutes earlier than usual just to gauge.

Same here with the traffic. Guess alotof th erents go back to work once the kids are out along with the school staff being back on the road. the morning traffic gets worse. Traffic later in the day is still the same though.

People who work in the education system
People who work for the education system
School buses
Kids who drive to school (including college)
Parents who drive their kids to school
Parents who adjust work schedule for school season
and finally...pedobears trying to get one more score.

the pedobears prolly sleep late too many parents around in the morning, they wake up for recess or for when school lets out so they can break out their trenchcoats.

I never noticed the traffic, I leave before 6am for work and get home at 6pm or so.

I have noticed its getting rather dark in the mornings though.

I sat in right lane traffic like an idiot for about 5 mins before I realized the schools were open again when I was otw to get some gas.. (left lane traffic was moving along at a normal pace).

I'm lucky. I dodge the school "traffic" this semester. There isn't much of it, but I have to pass 3 schools otw to/from class so it adds up.

I don't notice any difference in CA. Traffic is crap no matter what time or what day of the year it is.

I know, man... :(
Fuckin' 30 mile one way commute + back-to-school traffic is not fun.
Even the tollway only provides a small respite... where it dumps back into the regular road has started backing up again.

All that school going back means to me is that rather than being able to jog the 30 miles home at night faster than I could drive it, I can walk home faster than I could drive.

The difference here is very noticable. I love the 2.5 months of no school busses, soccer moms, teachers/administrators on the roads. Since school started back up a few weeks ago, my commute to/from work has increased about 15-20 mins, easy. Sucks.

Some of the trees behind my house look like they are dying again. It's odd, they keep dying and coming back to life after Winter. I think they are magic trees.

Ive noticed pretty thick traffic in and around schools between like 3pm and 4pm lately. Very strange.

With a teenager driving her sister to school, I now don't have to do anything in the morning other than make sure they are awake and out of the house.

The one even got up early today for Volleyball tri-outs and woke her sister up to take her in rather than me. WOO!!

See?

Your girls are on the road and you are not. It's an even trade.

I swear around here this is how it works:
The kids get a new car and head to school (1). Trophy mom decides she needs to head to the tennis club at the exact same time (2). Dad who used to go to the office at 7am now waits up too see the kids off so he is also on the road (3). The nanny realizes she has the WHOLE day free and heads to the beach (4).
Trophy wife has decided that with the kids gone it is a perfect time to redecorate. Window treatments (5), couches (6) and art work (7) are all delivered at 9am (from seperate vendors) and the decorator (8) and her "assistant" (9) are there to arrange it all.

So now, I head to work at 8:45 and instead of a pleasant drive with few cars I have an extra 9 vehicles per gated household to contend with filled with teenage drivers, cell phone yapping divas, self-important execs, illegal-driven delivery trucks and flamers.

I liked it better when mom banged the pool boy from 8-10am and then headed to the club. :idk:

A county near me has been on a school building binge and it has fucked traffic all to hell. There was one road that has had fucked up traffic for years being it was a main roadway and only 2 lanes. They finally built it into a 4 lane road and when they did traffic was awesome until they built schools all along it. Now traffic is worse than it has ever been.
