Segregation is still alive and well in parts of America. At Nettleton Middle School in Nettleton, MS, students are forbidden from running for certain student government positions if their skin is the wrong color.

And the banjo starts playing.
Good thing there's no inbreeding segregation. Then no one there could run for office.

"Each year, three of the the four executive positions are set aside for white students; one of the four is set aside for a black student. The highest rank a black student can hold? Vice-President, in 8th grade."
From what I can gather from other sources, this policy was originally meant to satisfy a 30 year-old Justice dept order on desegregation.
The idea was to rotate who could run for office on an annual basis: White this year, black next year, etc.
Apparently, no one on the school board thought to update the rules lately.
Glad to see they're up on shit in Mississippi. Somebody send these idiots a calendar.

WOW!
I knew racism was alive and well all over, but I didnt think shit like this was still happening in North American schools.

I'm sure you somehow see a connection between one individual temporarily dropping out of school in Germany over 100 years ago and the level of parental involvement in a pretty rural, pretty poor school district with a high dropout rate. I'm failing to make that connection though.:idk:

Just pointing out that blanket statements don't always hold true...although I will give you that rural Americans (dropouts or not), aren't necessarily the brightest fucking bulbs on the tree...call that a blanket statement, if you will, but I'm pretty confident in that one...

I agree, but then I also think urban and suburban people have intelligence issues as well. To me the largest impact is due to the economic situation more than anything.

intelligence being a relative thing that statement could go both ways. A lot of urban folks are completely useless when out of their comfy element as well.

Apparently they were "people" enough for the man who wrote those words to carry on a common law marriage with a black woman after promising his wife on her deathbed that he would never re-marry.
People enough for his common law wife to bear him numerous children.

Yes they were. Just only 3/5ths of a person
US Constitution. Article 1 section 2
Representatives and direct taxes shall be apportioned among the several states which may be included within this union, according to their respective numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole number of free persons, including those bound to service for a term of years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons

Sorry, but you are incorrect. "Bound to service" doesn't refer to slaves, but rather those people bound as indentured servants for a period of time. This was a common practise in order to, among other things, satisfy debts that could not otherwise be repaid through normal means. Being "bound" was not the same as being owned.

I didn't refer to those "bound by service", I referred to "other persons".

I will admit that you have me there, as The Constitution is mute on what constitutes an "other person." It could quite reasonably be assumed to include slaves, barring notation to the contrary.

Now here is a problem that I'm not sure if the founding fathers looked into. If black people are/were constitutionaly only 3/5ths of a person and that person was only half black does that mean they are only 3/10ths of a person or do they gain 3/10ths of a person and become 9/10ths of a person?
Need some math majors here.

Handled by the "one drop rule" and I betcha that they were only FISCALLY considered 3/5 of a "full person", for purposes of evaluating the value of property for taxation purposes.
