Saudi couple "hammer 24 nails" into Sri Lankan maid
(Reuters) - A Saudi couple tortured their Sri Lankan maid after she complained of a too heavy workload by hammering 24 nails into her hands, legs and forehead, officials said on Thursday.
Nearly 2 million Sri Lankans sought employment overseas last year and around 1.4 million, mostly maids, were employed in the Middle East. Many have complained of physical abuse or harassment.
L.T. Ariyawathi, a 49-year old mother of three, returned on Friday after five months in Saudi Arabia.
Her family only realized what had happened to her when she complained of pain and they took her to see the doctor, Foreign Employment Bureau officials said.
"The landlord and the wife of the landlord hammered 24 nails into her when she complained of the heavy workload," Kalyana Priya Ramanayake, media secretary of the Foreign Employment Bureau, told Reuters.
Ariyawathi has been taken to hospital for surgery to remove the nails, which according to the maid were hammered in when they were hot.
X-rays showed one- to two-inch nails in her hands and legs, with one over her eyes, officials said.
The Foreign Employment Bureau is consulting the Attorney-General while the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry is to take the matter up with the Saudi government, officials said.

Another one in the news the saudi's are setting the standard...
Saudi maid verdict 'outrageous'
Nour Miyati - in hospital in March 2005
Ms Miyati's condition was compelling physical evidence of abuse, HRW says
Human Rights Watch has called on Saudi judges to overturn a decision to drop charges against a Saudi couple accused of severely abusing an Indonesian maid.
A judge in Riyadh awarded $670 damages to the maid, Nour Miyati, but dropped all charges against her employers.
The female employer, who admitted the abuse and was originally sentenced to 35 lashes, had her sentence overturned.
Human Rights Watch said the ruling on Monday was "outrageous", and sent "a dangerous message" to Saudi employers.
Ms Miyati, 25, contracted gangrene after allegedly being tied up for a month and left without food in 2005. She had to have several fingers and toes amputated.
New York-based Human Rights Watch called for an appeals court to "impose stiff penalties on the employers, including imprisonment, and payment of significant financial compensation".
Saudi officials have not commented on the report.
'Impunity'
Human Rights Watch says Ms Miyati was treated in a Riyadh hospital in March 2005 for gangrene, malnourishment and other injuries.
All charges against Ms Miyati's male employer were dropped early in the investigation, Human Rights Watch says.
On Monday a Riyadh judge found the female employer not guilty, despite her earlier admission and "compelling physical evidence", the group says.
A prior Saudi judgement, subsequently overturned, had seen Ms Miyati convicted of falsely accusing her employers and sentenced to 79 lashes.
Human Rights Watch said the latest ruling "sends a dangerous message to Saudi employers that they can beat domestic workers with impunity and that victims have little hope of justice".
Rights organisations say many foreign domestic maids in Saudi Arabia work in harsh circumstances and often suffer abuse by their employers.
The Saudi Labour Ministry has acknowledged some problems, but the government also says foreign workers' rights are protected under Islamic law.

To be fair, there are dozens and dozens of torture cases within the U.S. that anyone could post to show that Americans are just as likely to commit acts of violence as Saudis are.
In fact, to my knowledge, the Saudis do not use male on male rape (that's anal penetration by penis or other foreign object) as a punishment. Yet the U.S. does....even for non-violent crimes.
Weird huh?

You're contending that being raped is better than say, having your arm cut off. That's a fair debate, but the point is that we in the U.S. should be careful when we point the finger and call other countries barbaric based on their methods of punishment. Rape is torture.

True.
Also, I think that any society where the inherent hierarchal system promotes classism will produce a legacy of savage acts as the upper classes dehumanize the lower.

Have you guys ever actually talked to a guy that's served time in prison? Prison rape happens, and its very common. A good percentage of the rapes are performed by guards, and the rest are performed while guards are turning a blind eye. It is in fact condoned by the only people of authority that really matter at that point, those that control the prison population.
It is used as a form of punishment and a deterent.

Being raped by a prison gang is not quite the same as "the US" using it as a means to punish.

Or both. Either way it doesn't matter, it is used and condoned and even accepted to a point by the general public, right here in the United States. I contend whether you call it control or punishment, it is torture.
Lets focus on our own barbaric practices instead of pointing out those of other nations.

No of course I don't, and it doesn't matter if they do or don't. I'm not worried about what other countries do or don't do as much as I'm concerned with what happens in the U.S.
I say it is the exact same getting raped by a prison gang while the guards and warden turn a blind eye as it would be if the judge ordered you to be raped. The end result is the same.
The U.S. Government, and state Governments that work with privately run prisons for profit, are well aware that prison rape is common and that authority generally turns a blind eye to it while at the same time sentencing more citizens of the U.S. to serve time in said prisons than any other nation, per capita.
Letting it happen is the same as ordering it to happen.

Maybe they were raped... and maybe they said it was so common to somehow diminish their experience... "it's not as bad if it happened to everyone"
Maybe they weren't raped, but wanted to make the experience sound more hardcore than it was... or maybe they just wanted to make people feel sorry for them despite their prior bad acts...
I dunno... people do and say crazy shit all the time to get attention... I'd have a hard time beleiving an ex-con on face value... Obviously it would be different if I had some sort of personal relationship with them to be able to guage reliability, otherwise I wouldn't buy it.
