View Full Version : Keys in ignition = Deserve to get car stolen.

This is a spin-off thread of Digifox's, "Hey, I'm a worthless piece of shit thief" thread, which I still call bullshit on, BTW.
ANYWAY, around these here parts it is illegal to leave your keys in your ignition while you go into the store, the mentality being if you do that then you deserve to get your car stolen. Which of course goes hand-in-hand with "Its ok to steal a car if the keys are already in it."
Everywhere we go there are signs in the parking lot reminding us to lock our car, hide our valuables, etc. etc. WTF? Should you not be able to leave your car running or unlocked or whatever and expect that no one will fuck with it? Shouldn't the police dedicate just as much effort to recovering your bicycle if you didn't put a lock on it as they would otherwise?
What do you guys think?

I agree with you. In the perfect world we would need locks but we are far from that. Your insurance companys will often not cover stolen cars if you left keys in them. They call it neglagence.

Stealing because somebody is a dumbass is still stealing no matter how you justify it. Taking something that doesn't belong to you without permission is theft. No ifs, ands, or buts.

I can't think of a single "good" reason to ever go anywhere in a public place and leave my vehicle running and unattended. Or not running but unattended with the keys in the ignition.
I mean, seriously....it takes a matter of seconds to re-start the vehicle....just secure the damn thing and re-start it when you get back.
Why go LOOKING for the hassle of having a vehicle stolen?!
Late Edit:
Having said all of that, there is still NO excuse for being a thief. NONE.

In Michigan, people leave their cars running while unattended all the time in the winter.

I was "back home" a few weeks ago and didn't think twice about running into the store with my truck running.
In fact, there were 3 other cars in the parking lot that had done the same.
It was nice to see.

Bet if you walked outside and stepped on a dollar you'd still stuff it in your pants though

Exactly why I would want to leave it running. Its 115 degrees on the pavement in Texas during summer...I'd prefer to leave the A/C running if I'm just running in and out. I never do, of course, I'm just sayin that you should be able to.

Sometimes I'll have the dog with me. Truck stays running with the A/C on. If I am going to be more than a few minutes, I can lock the doors with my spare key.

Tumblers in my van are worn to the point you can pull the keys while it runs. Extra handy when I want to warm it up

as far as keys in the ignition, two words=bait car.
id like to go back to the 40's n 50's where doors were left unlocked, keys in cars, hot rodding was coming of age, etc etc-but then id have to sit in the back of resturants(if they even let me inside), not date white girls, etc etc lol

A dropped dollar and a car running are not the same fucking thing. 1 dollar, nobody around, sure I'll pick it up. A paper bag of $500? I'd pick it up but take it to the police station.

Someone must have been trying to score political points by saying this law would help the city "save money" investigating thefts that could have been prevented if people hadn't left their keys in it.

This is what we do for our older vehicles. Our truck we lock and start it with the key fob.

When I was in Europe, you got a fat ticket for leaving your car unlocked, keys in it or no. They felt that it invited "joy riding" by teenagers which could be dangerous for both the joy riders and the public at large. I agree to an extent, but I also think that everyone should be required to have trigger locks on their guns when not on their person.:idk:

The difference is, if a dollar is on the street, you don't have any way of tracking down the owner. Not to mention the person isn't going to come looking for it anyway.

Uma's new Fiesta will have that completely keyless setup... not sure I can even have a remote start installed. That is the on ehurdle I'm not sure of, second is that it's a stick and the installer has to bypass the clutch safety switch.

It's different because there's no way in hell the original owner would ever recover it. Even if he remembered dropping a dollar, he's not going to bother going back to find it on a busy street. If you don't take it, someone else will, so it might as well be you.

My point which you appear to have locked in on the example and missed is that we as a society rationalise "theft" up to a certain point. The question is where is that acceptable limit?

Fwiw I believe the law is to help protect innocent citizens from unlicensed kids driving stolen cars and running them over.... In that respect, I can see a purpose in it. I don't think its to protect the thieves.:idk:

I wouldn't call that theft. It was found in public. "Find" a dollar in someones pocket = theft. Find a dollar on the street = found dollar. Find a dollar on the street with someones name, address, phone number and email address on it = theft.
If you find a bag with $500 in it and no name you can still possible find the owner. Its pretty hard to find the owner of a lost dollar.

Yea but here's the thing...some idiot leaves his keys in his car. Some young retards come along and figure they'll "just take it for a quick ride" . The idiots lose control and run over your wife and kids while they're out shopping for dinner. Does the car owner have any responsibility?:idk: Again not to protect the car owner or the thieves but to protect the INNOCENT bystanders that may be hurt.

I don't know if that's an assumption I'd make based on the law.
What they are saying is, why make it easier or more tempting for a potential thief?
Stealing is stealing... I'm pretty sure you can be prosecuted for auto theft even if the keys were in it... but if the owner leaves the keys in it he has facilitated that theft.
Think of it as another area where the insurance companies have lobbied for legislation that helps control their losses.

The problem there is that everyone on this board thinks the cops are going to steal th $500. I feel better just giving it away to a charity where I know it'll be put to good use...

One thing I hate about living in the city is I have to always lock up. When I lived in a house in the country I never locked up and when my bike was in the garage the keys stayed in. Just seemed that if any thefts happend in the country they happened outside the house. Mainly because if you got caught in someone's house you were as good as dead.
Infact that reminds me of a new country song out where I like a quote from it. Even though I don't believe in God I want to put this on my apartment door. Though it'd probably scare all of my whiney ass peace sticker rocking hipster neighbors.
"Our house is protected by the good Lord and a gun. You might meet them both if you come here not welcome son"

If that were the case, then the theif shouldn't be charged. Instead, the ownership should be transferred immediately.
Otherwise, Insurance should cover it.

Not exactly sure how the Fiesta is.
On the Mazda's that have the "credit card" key that you just keep in your pocket to unlock and start you could still install an AstroStart.
Only prob was the button on the outside door handle would not unlock the vehicle when the vehicle was running with the remote starter.
As for the manual portion, that's no big deal either, just have to program it for a manual and she will have to "arm" the starter every time she parks the vehicle and wants to use the remote start.
If you have questions, send me an email or PM, I can explain how AstroStart does it. Not sure of other brands as I never worked with them.
