I've got a buddy that does contractor work out that way. Prior military. Extremely good money. He hates it while he's out there, but he LOVES the cash that lets him race when he comes home...and rebuild all the bikes he keeps crashing.

if you don't have committments that requrie you to be here, then go for the money while you can.
push hard when you're young so you can enjoy life at a better pace when you're in the mid life numbers.

No shit. I've got plenty of experience on drilling rigs right up to relief driller. Working in the oil patch? Bring me??
I believe Inferno is a firefighter though.

Shit, if I didn't have my daughter, I'd take a job like that in a heartbeat. Earn, and save, as much money as I possibly could so I could retire as early as possible. I would not be blowing the money earned over there. My goal would be to become completely debt free, including my house and then bank as much as I possibly could.

Which contractor is it? I have experience in both Iraq and Afghanistan. What will you be doing for them?
Op is a dick. My first response when I read this this morning was id jump on it if it were me. I erased it and went with something else but apparently the almighty caught wind and decided to continue our lifelong relationship of jerking me around as proof that I really am the center of the universe. In other words I was offered a chance at a volunteer deployment and I'm gonna say yes. We'll see what happens. Jerk.

Go for it...but I will say if you are "gainfully employed" keep your job here in the states.

States jobs not likely to go anywhere  ill make a bunch more money, and between the boredom of reg life and how much regular americans annoy the fuck out of me its a good time to go. Only downsides will be being away from vic, the animals, and the bikes (prolly sell most of the toys, dunno) but if I don't go next year ill go in 12 or 13 so why not?

Okay here's what I'll do... I'll take Vic, the NSX and the bikes off your hands until you get back. I promise that I'll keep them all well used and maintained while you're gone.

I think its Afghan, but Im not 100% certain...I'll see if I can track it down. Unless he's changed career fields, he's an IED finder.

I know a few folks who have done a few years over there and live completely debt free , car, house everything paid for in cash, plus a nice retirement account, but they all do the danger jobs, truck driver, private security, that kind of stuff

Hubby may look at doing something like this himself when he retires from the AF, give us a nice little nest egg.

The folks I know that were in the really dangerous job were clearing 250, some of the safer and less skilled jobs (assembling furniture) were doing 70k, but the average for a skilled technitian like a fireman or IT support prolly around 150

Know what's really fucked up? I spent about eight months performing outside the wire combat ops in Afghanistan. I hated that place and couldn't wait to get home.
Still, part of me wants to go back. Something in me woke up in that place, and won't go back to sleep. Sometimes that seems like the only place where shit makes sense.
I guess I'm not in a position to really give you much of an answer. Still, let me know where and for what and I'll give you what insight I can. If you don't want to put it out there, pm me.

I'm waiting on a firefighting posting here. Its going to be tough to get. And I don't want to leave here at all so it limits the jobs I can get. But for 150k I would think about it

Thats 150 with no living expenses at all. Food is paid for, housing, laundry, etc... All you would need to pay for is your own internet service and cell phone service which many people get, at least on the larger bases
