So I just got an email back from one of the companies I applied to, and I dont know if they are blowing smoke or not, but I am really getting amped up in my search. Honestly I really dont know much about the area. I know more about west LA than east LA though.

So, what does everybody think of Culver City or Marina del Rey? I've also been looking in WeHo a bit, and surprisingly the prices aren't that different.

Any suggestions of places to look in to, or places to avoid???

Thanks!

Parts of Culver City are rather run-down and frankly not all that charming at all. Marina Del Rey also has some run-down areas, but Playa Del Rey has some nice apartment complexes for rent. From Marina Del Rey/Playa Del Rey, you can take the backroads to all the beaches.

Hey now, I grew up in Maryland and it is exciting if you like dodging bullets :lol

Anyways, don't know where you will work but if it were me I would be looking at La Canada or Woodland Hills, but depends on where the job is because traffic can get slightly heavy up there

Fuck no dude, there are plenty of places better than this, but pretty much what Mr Lifts said, Mexicans, earthquakes, traffic, mudslides, fires, and it all adds up to the fact that god does not like that place.

Try Norcal, Texas, the south east (not FL), NY, New England. Socal, its gonna brake off pretty soon and turn Nevada into beachfront property

Traffic might be bad, but it really isn't any worse than DC or Chicago. Mudslides and fires are isolated to a very few neighborhoods. NorCal is more expensive than SoCal, and is more due for an earthquake.

Culver City has a nice "reborn" downtown area but the rest of it is older 50s and 60s housing. Not the prettiest in the world but it's relatively cheap and if you get a place near downtown there's tons of stuff to do in walking distance.

WeHo is great (lived there for years) but being so central it takes forever to get to a freeway, then they tend to be stopped dead. Easy on a bike, PITA in a cage.

Get a place as close as possible to where you're going to work. Commute times suck.

Well the one that replied back is UTA. They are 9560 Wilshire Blvd, between Santa Monica Blvd and S Beverly. All of them are in the same block except one, which is like 3 blocks away.

Well technically I dont need to get to a highway. :dthumb: I could probably buy a freaking scooter, and thats all i'd ever need to get to work.

Where I need to start is located in either LA, NYC, Miami, Memphis, or LV. I'll take LA.

Last time I was there, Dallas is a lot better than Fort Worth.

Dallas at least has some educated people..........Fort Worth is more red-necky.

However even with Dallas you still have:
1) flat
2) hot
4) the churches are the size of high schools
5) most of the neighborhoods are generic 70's on up architecture. Your choices are limited to cheap vinyl siding, or fake stucco McMansions. No bricks or victorians from the 20's like real cities have.

Only advantage of living in TX is the gun laws, and the cheap homes (compared to the coasts). But Austin is probably the only part of it I'd be able to tolerate.

There is some apartments that I was looking at early on in Playa. One block from the beach, and the west facing apartments have an ocean view.

But I've kinda limited my searches to WeHo and Beverly. Just based on drive time. Even though Googlemaps says Playa is 16 minutes, you know the traffic will make it much more. I'd almost like to pedal bike it, or even Ruckus it. Would save me hella money in gas....

And I'd much rather move to Arizona before I would move to Texas....

The biggest problem with Cali is the overcrowdedness of people. Asians and Mexicans breed like rabbits. Not uncommon to pack 7 people in a one-bedroom apartment. This is the reason.....they start em young.

I've lived on Ohio States campus for 3 years.... crowd doesnt bother me. Neither does a bunch of people in small spaces, I live in a dorm for a year.

I'm looking to put 2 people in a 1 bed apt with a den, atleast for my first year till I build up some cash. We can put one in the bedroom, one in the den. I can always add one person to the family room if I see I cant hack it. But starting pay should handle...

Why would you move to CA if you have to live with 3 people in a one-bedroom apt? I could understand if you are saving for a house, but really.

Cali is expensive to live. While the housing is coming down, the rent is about the same, you pay 400 bucks a year to register a 20k car, 800 a year to insure it, gas is 3 bucks a gallon, income tax is 10%, sales tax is 9.75% and tickets are 400 bucks for speeding 5 over.

You better make good coin.

Here's the thing. I'm getting into talent agencies. Of course there are agencies everywhere blah blah blah, i've heard it. But if you want to be somewhere, its at the Big 4. Like I said in a previous post, they are located in LA, NYC, Miami, Memphis, and LV. NYC is too cold. Miami is too humid. Memphis is all country music related, blah. LA is kinda my choice over LV, because it is basically talent Mecca. Sure it is overrun, and overpriced. But if I make it past the first year and get my agency card, that wont matter.

Vegas is a back-up. The talent is a little different. And I have seen some nice neighborhoods in LV when poking around the internet.

Hmmmm...... like I said ^...

Move to LA.

You'd be in poontang heaven. Granted that it's slightly more expensive than other states but it's primo stuff.

You'd been in riding heaven. You can split lane, you can hit the twisties in Malibu, in Mt. Baldy, in the San Gabriel Mountains, by Lake Elizabeth/Lake Hughes, down in San Diego, North County, Temecula, Idylwild.

You'd be in track heaven. California Speedway if you want smooth surface & fast course, old timey style up in Willow Spring or Buttonwillow. New track in Pala down further south.

SCUBA diving the Channel Islands is second to none.

Oh yeah, and the beach weather is cool and refreshing.

SoCal rocks. I grew up there and love it. Traffic sucks but you'll get used to it. If it was me I'd live closer to the beach like Marina Del Rey and leave Culver City the fuck alone. Stay north of downtown and you should be ok. Huntington Beach is nice but it's too close to Long Beach. If you go east, again, stay to the north of I-10 and preferably close to I-210.

Thanks for the advice! There is a bunch of medium priced stuff right in downtown. Like right across the street from the Staples Center and the convention center. But I'm thinking I want to stay closer to the agencies. East is too far. If prices are relatively close, Im thinking why spend the money on gas and wear n tear on the car.

No no no... I know moving to cali without a job is suicide. And I'm not moving just to flip burgers while hoping to find a job. I've heard way too many times that I'm just a kid with stars in my eyes. Fuck that, I'm a businessman, and an agency job is just my choice of desk right now. I'm just looking for an extremely fast paced job, because I get bored easily. An agency job stays in house, you are thinking about production jobs that move with the movie making. I'm completely separate from that.

I graduate at the end of february, so that's why my resumes are going out now. And they will go out again at about 3 months. Of course I'm looking to get into the agency training programs. The pay isn't great, but its a ton more than I'm making now. Those programs last a year to a year and a half, before they assess you an agency card and you start filling a booking list, and collecting commission. That's why I said the first year is crucial to survive money wise, and then your good from there on out.

But basically I won't move without an ATP offer. But if I do get one I could be out as early as march. I plan to be out 2-3 weeks before the start date to get my bearings and get settled in. An agent told me to do that in an email. He said "get settled in, find your shops and restaurants, enjoy the sun, go to the beach, go to a Lakers game, and enjoy yourself..... because it will be the last time you see the sun until you test drive your BMW three years from now....."
