Lights up but won't start windows. Really weird. Also I'm not getting a picture, possibly because I use this unit with a screen.

Heysoos. Be nice.

No worries, I can't see his posts anyway.

What's the brand/model. You're probably going to have to reset the bios. Gonna find out if it has a removable cmos battery or one that's soldered on or a cmos reset jumper.

I really don't need the abuse. I have a few people on ignore, personally I think that its smart sauce....why waste the time?

Dell 1723 Vista... I'll pull the cover and check thanks. As of now it won't do anything past a quick flash at power up, then blank.

It is early so you may have posted and I missed it: after the initial bios stuff, you said you don't get the windows splash screen - do you get anything at all or do you get an error?

So you are seeing the SETUP / BOOT prompt? "Hit F12 for Setup, etc." Have you tried putting in a bootable CD and booting to that?

Need more information. Does it display anything on the built-in LCD? Does it make any sounds/beeps? Does it perform the power on self test, then just stop? Not enough here for a diagnosis.

Amber Lamps
10-04-2010, 09:23 AM
Sorry, okay it turns on, flashes Dell on the screen and then black. I was able to get it to display on the external monitor with f8 . It then shows start up repaIr until it gives up . I've removed the battery, back up battery and unplugged it and will mess with it more when I get home. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

During the power on self test hit the F12 key, then select "hard disk diagnostics" from the menu that appears. Sounds like your HDD is pooched.

Sounds like bad RAM to me. You at least get a message stating something about not being able to find a bootable drive if the HD is bad. If any RAM is bad, what you're describing is about as far as you get. It could also be a bad CPU.

Hey your opinion... my opinion is that I don't need to deal with it. Why would I actively seek out abuse? Why would I fight? What he says isn't any more important to me than what I say is to him. I'm honestly amazed that he even bothered to open my thread... I don't open his. Besides, I am not allowed to trade insults with people on this forum and I don't really want to. Anyway, I see zero reason for us to interact in any way... If I need funny, I have the comedy channel, it's a lot funnier when it's someone else being "roasted".

Bad memory is very unusual with Dells. If the hard drive has grown bad sectors, especially in the area used for Virtual Memory, is can present in the way described. Let's just say that I have a HELL of a big install base of Dell systems ;)

Fixed! I booted up using my Windows CD and got it to start up. It looks likie my OS memory was too low for start up... I totally deleted the crap out of a bunch of stupid programs I had lurking there. It seems okay now but we'll see. Heck, the only reason I found out there was a problem was because we had a brief power outage. I never turn this laptop off

Just in case, take a look in Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer and make sure that you don't have any errors in the System or Applications logs.

Whoa...did you just call me "stupid"? Why? I build computers for security systems from the ground up. I was just having a problem with this laptop. I appreciate all the advice I got from those that genuinely wanted to help. To everyone else, well you all do what you do...

Besides, you're kinda new here. AMJ has said some terrible things to me in the past and I've had him on ignore for the better part of a year. I didn't ask him for help and frankly the only reason he could have possibly even had for opening my thread was to find some way to make fun of/insult me. I'm not sure why you would insult me in this way, and I really appreciate the fact that you came on this thread not to help but to insult me as well, says a lot about you.

I honestly have no clue why anyone would care that I have a few people on ignore... Why not? Heck, I can't help but imagine that I've been on ignore with quite a few people. Even if I'm not on ignore, I'm sure that they don't bother to read my threads and there's nothing wrong with that in my book. That's why we have filters on the site, I block all of the sections I have no interest in and ignore the people that I don't want to interact with. I do the same thing in real life whenever possible....:idk:

Strange, none of my sexual partners have ever asked whether or not I put people on "ignore" in forums... It just doesn't seem to be a criteria, at least not here anyway. Perhaps, it is a regional thing?

"Hey babe, wanna go back to my place?"

"Maybe, do you use the "ignore" feature on internet forums?"

"Why as a matter of fact I do."
