View Full Version : "Ignore"?

Amber Lamps

A recent thread has brought to my attention that people here believe that placing people that you hate or don't get along with on "ignore" is a bad thing.

1. Do you have anyone on ignore?

2. Do you think that it is a bad thing?

3. Why is it a bad thing?

I ignore myself so its all good.

It would be just like in the real world not listening to someone you dont like. Ignore away my friend.

true. You always hope that for once they contributed something worthwhile, but it is always a let down. And everyone quotes on here.

Porkchop
10-06-2010, 01:00 AM
1. No, I actually didnt know it was a feature....

2. No, if you dont like someone, fuck em. I ignore people in real life. I just think it would be hard in a forum to remove context of a conversation. Especially if you have alot of people blocked. Besides, i try to take into account that by engaging in an online forum, by default almost everybody is going to be a giant douche at one time or another. (Or all of the time) I just try not to get my tighty whities in a bunch over it, and just laugh at people.

3. Its not....

or when they dont quote them and you are trying to figure out what someone is talking about in a post that you cant see.

I did that on CF for one annoying fucker who posted in every thread and I was completely lost as to what people were talking about.

lol for a while tig I had YOU on ignore...

I don't have anyone at the moment... but I have time to time... just cause I'm tired of reading the same ignorant posts... it's like that dumbass friend that does stupid shit just to get attention... stop paying attention to him and eventually he'll drink him self to death.

but I've found a better fix is the hide subforms feature. I've got several sub forums on the list, can't remember which ones at the moment... but notice a drastic decline in the amount of ignorant shit to sift through... (I said decline... not elimination... that'd require a ban )

fuck I could care less who ignores who... hell ignore me... just don't make a big deal about who you ignore (not saying you were tig)

I have one person on ignore.

Like others have said it can be annoying to see the posts with no content, or not know what people are talking about in threads.

I *try* and self ignore but it doesn't always work.

It's hard, because people read way to much into what you post sometimes, or you read way too much into what they post.

Going forward, I'm just not going to comment on what some say, or post anywhere near them. Not specific people, but should someone annoy me.

I don't have anyone on ignore and probably never will. I enjoy arguing and I'm pretty good about staying aware that it is just the internet. I don't even agree with some of the arguments I make, I'm just bored and feel like taking the contrary side. If someone disagrees with me or refuses to see my logic? Oh well, its the internet. If they are abrasive and rude? Oh well, its the internet. I can't see a person being such an internet asshole that I'm incapable of handling it.

That being said, people are different. I have a high tolerance for annoyances and revel in aggravation. If you don't then the ignore feature is an effective way to deal with it.

Of course I don't know if you can read this because I may be on ignore.:rockwoot:

Sometimes it's just the internet and for the majority of "debates" or "opinion" type things I can handle it.

Other times people are downright rude and hurtful. And I feel sorry for people like that (although to be honest we've all been there a time or two) because I can only imagine how rude they are in real life. Or maybe they're not like that at all but just like that behind a keyboard. Who knows.

I have had this forum on ignore for a few months now. Reasons why:

1. Threads like this. Sorry, Lon. I'm not trying to be mean, but WTF? Somebody criticized you because you ignored Jesus, and you give a shit?
2. New threads with nothing but an internet link and commentary like "Interesting", or "Herka Derka", or "Wow". I have Google on my computer. I don't need a search butler. If soemthing is interesting enough to post, at least give us the Reader's Digest version of it.
3. Certain people posting on EVERY thread whether or not they have constructive input. Hey, I don't know shit about nuclear fission, but the OP is dead wrong!

In general, I'm sick of internet forums altogether. This one isn't any different from any of the thousands of others out there. I know it is impossible, but I try to treat people on the internet as I would in person.

If I go to a bar, and there is a loudmouth who interjects himself into everyone else's conversations, I avoid or ignore that person. If at the same bar, someone's only contribution to the conversation is "Hey, did you see this link on Youtube, etc", I avoid that person. If at the same bar, there is a bully wandering around picking fights, I certainly avoid that person. If there are more of these people than "normal" folks, I find another bar, or simply go home. I think most people here would go by the same guidelines in real life, but throw everything out the window when it comes to an internet forum.

Long story short, if you don't want to see someone's posts, put them on ignore. If someone else has a problem with what you do, put them on ignore too.

Have you read the Quran? If not, why not? Seriously, do you read EVERY post on every forum that you belong to? Besides, I committed to Rae and Nick, that would no longer engage in personal fights on this forum. A few people here continued to attack me personally and to be frank, the best way to avoid a conflict is to avoid the other person(s)... The name calling and insults would have been too easy bait for me to pass up. It's like an alcoholic avoiding the bar, does that make him a coward? In your eyes maybe but not mine.

I also don't ignore because someone can be an asshole in one thread and not in another. So I try to leave an argument in the thread when I leave.

There has been times that I didn't even open a thread because of the thread starter or because of who was the last poster.

No one on ignore, don't feel it is necessary. If I see the thread going in the wrong direction, I "fast forward" through it until I get to a point I'm interested in reading or I leave it. A lot of times I just skim the posts and don't read through completely.
