View Full Version : Which Shinko tires you want me to review

Well its tire time and I thought I would have some fun and go of into left field. I've always been the guy that likes to try a product that "isn't good" or "sucks." Heck, people talk to me strange when they find out I have D616's on my vfr.

So here's your choices.

003 Stealth - Soft tire. Should be sticky sticky.

005 Advance - The "All Around" tire.

009 Raven - Already a review done on these by Treybrad. A mileage tire.

New designs

010 Apex - These are the "new" 005's, but the rear is JLSB (Joint-Less Steel Belted) with a new tread radius design for better high speed cornering. The fronts are still aramid belted. Intermediate compound. Sport.

011 Verge - These are the upgraded 009's. A mileage tire with JLSB rear. Sport/touring.

I'll see what ya'll have to say and compare it to what my brain is thinking. I'll make a choice from ya'lls replies or I might just randomly pick one. We'll see.

I actually have a set of 005s on right now. The old tires were whipped when I bought the bike and seller included these with it. I didnt feel like buying different ones so I mounted them. Ended up doing a fair bit of 2up touring with them this summer and they held up well. After about 5000Kms the front has not developed the notorious "Cupping" that most tires get on our roads and the rear has not flat spotted in the center. I've got them worn pretty much to the edge without much drama from them. I've never priced them but I understand they're pretty cheap. Popular with the drag racers around here. Not a bad tire for the price I guess.

You go right ahead.

I bought a Speed 4 this spring an it had a set of almost new 06's on it....bike slid around like it was on greased BB's....and yes, the tires had correct pressures....

My preferrred technique is brake early and late turn in-late apex for the street. I like to snap the bike over.....not with the Shinkos.....I skated the front twice in abouit two miles and that was enough for me.....on went some 2CT's....

I'm with you, I spooned a set on in desperation one Sat and they were off after a trip around town. Although this was before the "new" compounds. As I understood it, Shinko was buying old molds/machines from other companies, so you basically ended up with "old tech" tires. Probably okay, depending on the bike and your riding habits but I didn't like them very much.

If you want cheap, I've heard decent things about Full Bore tires... Under $200/set but heck, I just saw Dunlop Q2s 120/70-190/55s for $230 shipped so...:idk: FWIW the "top end" Shinko tires (010/011) are about $210 shipped. They are getting very good reviews I must say.

Im not doing it because of price. I can put whatever tires i want on my bikes.

These tires need "full" reviews instead of typical no one wants to try them cause 5 people down said they sucked.

Well, I personally think that you'll be happy with basically any tires you choose for the bikes you own. You can't really go wrong IMHO. Let us know what you discover. Thanks.

winters coming, even in Texas the roads will be cold. Go full soft. Lets go full soft. I'd like to know if the 003s could be budget track day tires...

My vfr can wear down a Qualifier as if it was made out of marshmellows.

I want to try out the "new" tires, but I've got this going on another forum. I can wait a few more days before making up my mind.

VFRs are kinda porky arent they?

I bet if 'ridden' a good rider could do a set of anything in a day or two of 'spirited' riding???

I'm gonna go with the new 010 APEX ones. They are the new 005's. I dont want a touring tire cause I dont feel comfortable with hard rubber and cold streets.

So help me find the cheapest price on these. So far ebay is $195 shipped.

I would be mroe afraid of throwing my bike away on not so good tires. I am sticking with the pilot powers for now. Theyre cheaper since the pures are the latest/greatest and they still work well for me at my slow speeds

They suck royal ass. One of the guys I know got a free set to try during race practice. He went out for 5 mins and came back in and said "get these fucking piece of shits off my bike now."

Tires aren't the place to save money.

I agree on the old gen but these new tires are supposed to be better...:idk: I've seen both the Bridgestones and the Dunlops for around $200 shipped so I don't see the point but hey, to each their own I say.

Now here's a straight drag tire they make. No number, but it looks like the stealth rear, just less dimples.

What? Since when? These people condemn entire races, genders, religions, creeds, motorcycle brands, gun manufacturers, dog breeds, regions of the country, countries, you name it, based on the actions a a few or even one example all the time. What, do tires get some kind of special "dont judge us based on one example" amnesty or something?

Hey. When you own your own forum you can say whatever, but until then you need to come back over to the corner where every one else is (including me) and STFU.

My "shitty" tires should be in tomorrow. If they don't work out, I'm gonna melt them down and make Trip dildos out of them. I'll have on the package, "Recommended without lube to get the full Trip affect."

I bought tires today. After reviewing this thread and doing some shopping, I very seriously considered ordering a set of the 009 or 010 Shinkos. The 010s were about $40 cheaper than a set of Pilot Powers, and the 009s were about $60 cheaper.

I read some great reviews on the 009s as a sport-touring tire, with a heavy emphasis on touring. Everyone said they are very slow to turn-in and really aren't much of a sporting tire, but mileage was great. I decided against them because I ride a 600SS and like being able to lean the thing.

That meant it was down to the 010s or the Pilot Powers. The PPs were $40 more expensive. Being as I couldn't find any real reviews on the 010s and I know that I love the PPs, I spent the $40. I should have my Michelins this week. ;)

RS, I hope your experience with these tires is a good one and you have a detailed write-up. You may convince me to make the switch next time.

Well it looks like HF has stopped carrying the tire changer and adapter that people were using to change their moto tires with. This sucks. Gonna have to man handle them on I guess.

That's not the same tire changer. The original one had 4 prong arm things that grabbed the wheel.

Well I got the rear half way on. It's just really tight to do the pry method. Gonna go to HF tomorrow and see if they they still have the older model and moto wheel adapter or if the other two changers will work.

tire snobbery aside(u like what u like, thats cool) unless you pushing hard in the canyons at near track pace, or actually at a track, isnt it a bit of a cop out to blame tire brands for your crash. not that anyone would do that redflip
