View Full Version : MY bike is dead!!!!

rider76

ok, here is the sitiuation. I just got a vortex racing led clear tail light ... the one with the turn signals built in...I open the box and it had a plug to connect to the tail/brake light. then there was a yellow and a blue wire, the fucker came with no instructions so I decided to wait till I got a day off to fuck with it.. So I go to work today and my buddy decides to surprise me my hooking my shit up.

I get home and he tells me that when he hooked up the yellow and blue wires that control the signals, he must have gotten them wrong. he said he heard a spark and the bike went dead... no headlight, fuel pump, guage lights nothing.. I check the fuses under the seat and replace the main 30 amp fuse.. but nothing.. any ideas?

Trip

remove all changes in wiring and recheck all fuses

I did that.... I checked all the fuses in the fuse box all were good, recheck the main fuse good... These are all the fuses I know of... oh ya its a 04 gsxr 1000

Kick his ass number one.

Did he leave them hooked up? If so, check battery voltage. He may have completely drained it somehow.

Trip
06-10-2008, 09:23 PM
So your new taillight is off and your old taillight is back on? Check your battery with a voltmeter. It sounds like your buddy did a lot more than hook something up wrong in just the taillight wiring.

rider76
06-10-2008, 09:32 PM
He tells me he had the key on when he was doing it, he hooked up on wire and the left tirn signal flashed, he thinks he might have crossed the wires, he sees a small arc and the power went out... I tryed to push start it but it still wont start.. I dont know if it is because the fuel pump needs power to operate on what? I am at a lose. is there another fuse or breaker type thing that I dont know about?

T Rock man I want to kick his ass bad.. believe me... I was going on a charity ride on saturday, but i dont know now..:panic:

Trip

remove the light altogether, make sure all connections exposed are taped up and try to jump start it.

t-homo
06-10-2008, 09:36 PM
All I can think of is fuses, unless somewhere a 12 volt wire got too hot and melted the coating and is now shorting the whole bike out. Even with low voltage on the battery there would still be headlights.

Trip
06-10-2008, 09:39 PM
Probably shorted the battery and left it that way and killed the battery.

Yeah replace the battery. he probably fucked the battery like Trip said.

and yeah... fuck I won't even fuck with MY bike if I don't know what I'm doing.. let alone someone elses! damn...

hope it gets sorted out quick!

oh and make sure HE's paying

So lets say what my friend said was true. If he did miss wire the signals, I would think the fuse for the signals would blow. I just dont get it the bike acts like it has no battery. I put the battery on charge and is charging. I should be able to push start it if the battery is dead.

Guys, I am so worrying about having my bike back on the road, I really aint thinking bout.. dumb dick the electricial specialist... He used to install car stereos at best buy before joining the Air Force..

DLIT

Is there another location where other fuses hide? Have you checked? A spark, huh? That's weird.

Not always true... bikes aren't completly like cars... the alternators don't put out as much juice... so starting an FI bike may not work by push start... :idk: didn't work on my friends SV when his battery died...

don't know for sure though...

but like DLit said... talk to a dealer see if they know of a hidden master fuse.

My bike is carbed and I can pop start it. Push start then pop the clutch in first gear and hit the throttle hard.

rider76
06-10-2008, 10:33 PM
Ok, I just pushed this fucker for 2 blocks trying to push start it.... If I get it going fast enough( dont know how fast the speedo is digital) the headlights and guage lights will come on after I let out on the clutch, but it wont start...the lights only come on for a second.. maybe the compression of the engine? I charged the battery and still nothing.. I have never heard of this shit....

Is there another location where other fuses hide? Have you checked? A spark, huh? That's weird.

Thats what I think, but I couldnt find another one, the owners manual only mentions the ones I have already checked:idk:

Mr Lefty
06-10-2008, 10:38 PM
is the battery still good? try a NEW battery... many times things like this can ruin a battery.

again make the fucker pay for it

t-homo
06-10-2008, 10:39 PM
My bike wouldn't start before 10 miles an hour. Its best to find a hill and a friend to push you. If the bike is too dead, the plugs wont be able to fire causing you to be SOL. Did charging help at all?

rider76
06-10-2008, 10:45 PM
No the battery charged for 20 minutes and the charger showed a full charge.... Its like its just not getting spark..

There has to be a hidden fuse or he fried a electrical part/sensor somewhere... sucks balls

Mr Lefty
06-10-2008, 11:12 PM
tell'n ya... get a new battery...

I had a bad one that when I charged it would show a full charge. but it still wouldn't start my truck... took it to autozone... they tested it with an Ohm meter... 5.6v... (should be 12) replaced it... ran perfectly

06-10-2008, 11:31 PM
I'm guessing killed battery. What the hell... key on??!? Who DOES that? I guess we know now :skep:

Should have fried a fuse and been over. But, it wouldn't arch if it were just a turn signal or brake light. Or, I wouldn't think it would. Is he sure it wasn't more into the harness than that?

Bullshit. My battery was 75 the lowest i could find on the internet. 117 for the cheapest local place.

No Worries
06-11-2008, 12:09 AM
Some cars have a fusible link. Maybe your Gixxer has one and that's what flashed.

If you don't have one, now is the time to buy a digital voltmeter at Sears or somewhere for $10. Then you can see if the battery is dead. I've seen chargers "charge" dead batteries, so I wouldn't go by that.

sounds like what happened to me, i was hooking up my CA taillight, was checking the wires to see what wire went to what turn signal, the wires slipped from the connector, touched, crackle, bike was dead. found the fuze and replaced, bike started right up.

do what ebbs said, take battery to get tested, if its the battery, i've got a replacement for an 03 750 from batteriesplus.com for half the price of the stealership.

just looked it up. 60.67 shipped to 63131 for this battery Xtreme Permaseal High Performance AGM Motorcycle, Powersport Battery - XTAX9-BS for your bike. hope you get it running.

You guys need to slow down here! In a rush with no thought is what got rider76 here.

Trip was on the right angle... always revert back to what it was before it got fucked up. Remove the "new" part.

DO NOT try to jump or push start. If you have no power that is a waste of time and putting un-needed abuse to the bike.

Things EVERY bike owner should have.

Service Manual... GET IT, AND READ IT!!
A multimeter... USE IT, AND USE IT OFTEN!!

Take the multi meter and set it to low DC voltage. Now check your battery. All this talk about "new battery this and that" is complete BS WITHOUT checking it first!! Needs to be 12.8 or better.

Now if it is good at the battery terminal then you must work your way out. You say you checked the fuses. Is there a seperate fuse for the tails and turns? On the main fuse, are you sure its not broke? This is where your multimeter comes in again. Check each fuse again with the multimeter on Ohlms. Put a multimeter terminal on each end of the fuse. Should show a closed loop. If not the fuse is no good.

I'm laying my money on these steps. There is more you can go thru but this is where it will be, sense you say you have no power anywhere.

Well... that unless your key switch is not switched to on or it is shot.

Now granted I'm just a chopper guy... but I have probably worked on more bikes this year alone than most of you have owned. And now I have people trucking bikes to my house to work on. Got a 1981 Honda Nighthawk in the garage for a complete work over from a non roadworthy to roadworthy bike. Take it for what you want... I'm not out a bike. My rep is good enough for most, the rest FTW.

Do what the fuck gasman says. I got my voltmeter at a yardsale for like 5 bucks, worked perfect since I was 16.
You can get one at radioshack for like 20 bucks and it can be used on all types of wirings and stuff.

Other than that, my gut instinct was the battery replacement but that would just be lame if you buy a new one and that wasnt the problem.

electricial specialist... He used to install car stereos at best buy
ERROR. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Mr Lefty
06-11-2008, 03:12 AM

I installed car stereo for 5 years... Circuit City, Magnolia HiFi. doesn't make you a electrical specialist...

though after hearing that... I'm never gonna have best buy install any shit in my truck fi they don't teach to turn the ignition off when fuck'n with wiring!

When we get to BK, he asks me "how are doing with transationing(sp) back to normal life". He thinks I have Post trumatic stress, ( all those guys coming back and killing there families and shit). I said I am doing well, but this dumb dick that works in Dental Squadron fucked up my bike...

Then he smiles ( guess if I was fucked up there would be a shit load of paperwork) and makes me pay for my own lunch.... bullshit..

So anyway, I read all of your ideas and I am going to do what Gasman thinks I should do . will keep you posted..

I go up to Sears, buy me a multimeter and head out to the garage to do battle. No sooner than I get my seat off, ol boy shows up( electrical wizard) with his head hung. Before I can say a word he's said " Laura (his wife) told me to tell you to take your bike to the shop and I will pay to have it fixed". So I say ok help me load it, so he helps me load and unload it at the shop.

When we get there he tells his story to the service guy, who trys hard not to laugh at his stupid ass.

I get home and my wife says" I solved your problem"... you see his wife and my wife are friends. My wife got tired of me bitchin about the bike, so she called her friend..

Even if it did work, I would still be pissed at him for doing it. I hate when someone else messes with even the smallest thing on my bike without my permission for each detail of what they are doing. However, if I don't know what I am doing, I normally call a great friend of mine who has been riding forever and he teaches me while he does it. If something gets messed up and i didn't give them permission for it, I will be really pissed. However, if i am around or give them permission, i take it as my own fuck up and blame myself.

Yeah- I want to know where you got that done? Hourly rate where I bought my bike is $80!

Glad you got it fixed. Did they say where the short was? Or what they did to fix it? Probably just wrapped tape around it. They may have covered it in heat shrink or spliced a new length of wire in though.

1. Dnyce, I was too pissed to go to dinner that night

2. Gasman, I know my new Muiltimeter is going to come in handy in the future.
3. the shop I took it to is a family owned cycle shop, not a dealer. They always have alot of bikes to work on, usually older ones that people wont take to the dealer cause they charge too much... I know the counter/service manager pretty well, when I took it in yesterday at 3pm, I asked him if someone could take a look at it asap. He said he would try to squeeze me in, 2 hours later me calls to say its fixed...

4. I think they charge $70 per hr labor, which is way cheaper then the closest dealer who charges $ 90 per hr..

5. I think I answered everyones questions, thanks for the help everybody. the next time you see Ebbs, he will buy you all a beer, on my behalf

6. now on to my charity ride on saturday
