I have a shit ton of HP parts housed safely in a rusting hulk of a 71 Chevelle.

It would probably benefit from a rotisserie resto, but that's more than I care to tackle anymore....so...

Meet my new project car...er, truck:

http://poopnugget.com/files/1972 El Camino elcamino ori...pdf

It will receive all of the fine running gear (Built 350, M20 wide box, and Brute Posi 12 bolt w/ladder bars) from the Chevelle.

While I'm excited, the fear of knowing that I just added another rust bucket to the "collection" is daunting.

I should have a nice welding arc tan come spring...

It may be the upper white trash in me, but I like El Caminos.
Good pick :dthumb:

Wow, what kind of bad shape is the Chevelle in when that El Camino is the easier option? Not a bad deal for the price but it looks like a hell of a lot of work. It sounds like it will be a pretty sweet ride once you are done though. Good luck.

Well, it is rusty. Rustier than I thought. I'm kinda bummed. I sorta have buyer's remorse.

It's certainly worth what I paid (the fucking thing even starts and drives!)...as you almost can't find these fucking cars anymore at all, period...and the parts are all still widely available to restore them...in fact, there's even a few yards that support El Caminos only with parts.

The real reason for getting this over my Chevelle was the hopes that I could restore it without popping the body off the frame, and onto a rotisserie. I wasn't really up for that much work, and it appeared at first blush that the Camino might be the easier option, and would be a candidate for frame-on resto. Now, I'm not so sure.

Turns out, there's a lot of rust where I hadn't spotted it.

So, I might still be looking for a better shell to use...I'm not convinced I have one, don't really wanna work that hard (frame off)...sigh.

I've had an A body Chevelle since I was 18. I really miss having one of these on the road. Really want a nice shell to put all my shit in, but I don't know if one in the shape I want, can even be had for an approachable amount of money.

Someone was selling a rotisserie on Craigslist...wonder if it's still there.

!#$!%^*&(&*%#@!%$@!

There are a few A bodies around here...ok shape. If ya want me to look, I will, I have nothing to do for the forseeable future. What happened to the Mustang?

The 'Stang is sitting. The car was fucking perfect. It only needed paint. I'm so bummed it got hit. It got T-boned on the driver's side A pillar. Took out the door, the fender, and the upper ball joint....so it doesn't roll. The smack was just hard enough topside to crack the windscreen, and the footwell is pushed in a bit.

Tell the truth, maybe a good pull on the bottom of the A-pillar on a frame table, a new fender, door, and ball joint, and that thing might actually be OK again.

Unfortunately, I'm no frame expert, so I'm holding onto it for now.

I know it's a real "girl's car" to many, but the MX-5 Miata can swallow the entire drivetrain of that 'Stang ( http://www.monstermiata.com ), and MX-5s in decent rebuildable shape are going for as little as $1500 around here...so I am eying that as an option (as well as a swap of all parts to another Fox body).

If you see a nice 'Velle for cheap, lemme know...but I don't know how I'd get it back to Jersey. I've been considering getting a tow dolly, or trailer...

5.0 miatas are beastly. Nothing girly about that

Little car, big motor...best way to go fast. Just ask Carroll Shelby.

He did it with the Sunbeam Tiger AND the Cobra.

It's a thought. The kit is four grand, though...

I'll keep an eye out...the pick and pull here has a few fox body stangs...and we have at least 2 Mustang specialist recyclers near me.

wasnt it the ace before he renamed it? 4 grand is pretty painful considering you have to supply the car(s). i mean, if you were gonna dump that kind of cash might as well do a bit more and get a factory five cobra kit. :dribble:

It was indeed; The AC Ace...and it was considered a "Girl's Car".

A Miata will also take an LS/T56 drivetrain from a Vette. When done right (suspension, brakes, diff, etc. upgraded to handle the power) and considering the work most $1,500 Miatas require I figure it will be somewhere north of $20k once it is all said and done though. I'd like to do one at some point but it isn't happening right now.

Since you already have the Mustang drivetrain it would be less but still probably in the $15k range.

That depends on what a person is going to do with the car. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Cobra replicas and if I ever had way, way more money than I needed I would have a Kirkham in my garage. For those that want A/C that works well, independent rear suspension that doesn't cost thousands extra, don't want all the attention that comes with a Cobra, and most importantly want a top that goes up quickly and actually works the Factory Five probably isn't the best choice though.

In that case you could dump it in a fairmont for a couple hundred bucks
