View Full Version : Poor Taco...

Sooooo we just got news that Taco needs surgery.

A couple of days ago, Taco threw up in his cage. I figured he ate some of his favorite toy and it fucked with his stomach, but he wouldn't touch his food during meal time. Later that evening, he threw up a couple more times.

Yesterday morning we took him to the vet and the vet said it could possibly be his food, something he ate other than his food, or some sort of blockage... however during the exam, he could not identify any blockage. He provided some special food, which Taco ate the hell out of, and kept him for the day for observations.

Everything looked ok when we brought him home later that day... we continued feeding him the special food per doctor's orders. At 2am this morning, we awoke to Taco vomitting all over our bed. He threw up several more times when we got up, but seemed ok afterwards. I noticed some little parts of a toy in his vomit and figured that was it.

This morning when I got up, Taco seemed fine, went outside... pooped, peed and in my groggy state, I almost didn't notice... his eye was really puffy and almost completely swollen shut. I got ready for work and his eye seemed to be much better, so ONSSP just watched him for a little while. Soon after I left, the other eye started swelling so she took him to the vet.

The doc figured the swelling was some sort of allergy, possibly related to what's going on inside of Taco or maybe something else he ate. X-rays showed nothing, so they gave him some beryllium, waited an hour and took more x-rays. The results showed something in there, 'granular', that was impeding the beryllium from passing. He is going into surgery later this afternoon.

The doc says it could be something he ate recently, or it could have been in there for quite a while. He noted that Taco is pretty skinny, possibly as a result of this blockage.

Cross your fingers.

Just popping in here, been awhile.

My APBT had the same issue. The vet said it was pancreatitis 1st, then after 4 days in the vets with iv's and meds, theyu did the barium xrays....my dumb dog ate a toy, got lodged in his stomach, and needed emergency surgery.

almost 5 grand later, and one huge scar on his belly, he's all good.

good luck to Taco.....:)

Yeah, it got expensive. total time for Loki as an inpatient at the vet was 8 days, i believe.......it sucked. I went to "walk" him 3-4 times a day, since some of the vet techs were afraid of him....he gave no reason to be afraid. Hell, they were drawing his blood and he was licking the vets face..

The worrying and waiting is the worst part. I took Loki in pretty quick, once he started puking....i even gave him Sub Q fluids before that, to make sure he didn't get dehydrated.

Keep me posted on Taco. If you have any ???, just ask.

One of my Schnauzers is having seizures every few weeks. Starting to get a little more frequent so she's going on medicine now. Breaks my heart to see her spaz on the floor. Hopefully your little guy gets better.

Are the vets putting your pup on Phenobarbital?

If thats the case, remember it will make your dog thirsty as hell....all the time. At least that's what our old Boxer did.....she was 13 when the seizures started.. ....scared the shit out of us when it started.

Good luck!

Fuckin ants. Can you believe it? Fucking ANTS!

He had three large ants in his stomach... so the theory goes like this... He eats ants live, they bite the shit out of his stomach as they die, and he has an allergic reaction...

FUCKING ANTS!

Watching one of your dogs having problems just sucks. Sorry to hear it, good luck, and hope he gets better.

Ants? I've never heard of that before. At least it is something that is pretty easily correctable.

$1050 to find out he needed a few doses of Benadryl... ouch.
Sorry he was sick and glad it got resolved without surgery. :dthumb:

No, he had the surgery... They pulled out his stomach, opened it up, and examined his stomach and small intestine. Only thing found was ants. The docs both said his x-rays looked strange and the beryllium indicated something out of whack... They weren't 100% if it was just the ants or not.

My guess is that they had attached themselves inside his stomach... I found one attached to his tongue a couple of weeks ago. The ants are about 1/2" and he goes after them like a champion.

Glad your puppers is okay!! Crazy to go from a possible bowel obstruction to allergy to ants.

I know it's a lot of money, but it's hard not to spend a few grand when you really, really love your furry friend. I am currently in week 4 post acl surgery for my lab. 4 grand later, he has titanium and bone grafts.

Man I love my dog....

from the size of them 1/2", prolly Carpenter ants they are nasty little fuckers and could be around a wood pile. Do you have any wood stacked or laying around the yard? Or perhaps a garden border? If so then flip over the wood and find the burrow holes and treat with some Ortho ant killer or just have a cool bonfire, and watch those bastards that fucked up your pooch burn and pop.

Hope this doesn't offend Akilldema. I know how much of an animal rights activist he is. He may get offended by this recommendation of blatant destruction of a sensitive living creature.:lmao:

Maybe some of that insectacide you hook up to the hose... spray everything down.

I know I do that numerous times a year in my back yard and onto the house (to keep the spiders down).

Big nasty red carpenter ants... no woodpiles, just an old tree that probably needs trimmed back and my neighbor's fence is probably infested... I'm going to have the exterminator out this week... he's due for his quarterly spray down anyway.

Borax mixed with either sugar or syrup works really well for ants. They take it back to the nest, and it kills them all.

thats what it sounded like to me. I have been bitten by Carpenter ants before, they hurt like a mother F'er. course they do chew on wood. He is lucky they didn't actually physically hurt is guts. well, I hope the best for ya and good luck gettin rid of 'em. I would ask the neighbor to check the fence and if infested to remove it for the health of your pooch.

Pest control guy found some old wood half buried next to the tree that I thought was the problem... it was between the tree and a brick wall, so I couldn't see it... He found it and in it, and under the wall was a bigass carpenter ant nest.
