Clearly not an airliner or any other type of plane unless they launched another scramjet. Contrails form off the wing tips and leave 2 pretty distinct lines when viewed close to object making them. I have never seen the afterburners of any military jet put out that much smoke. The only thing I know of that puts out that kind of plume would be a very large booster rocket. If I had to guess, I would go with the ballistic missle probably fired from a submarine that the military knows about but just has decided not to comment on. Makes the most sense to me...

Hard to tell direction, based on the pictures, but the "launch" appears to be close to vertical and there's a kink in the path, reminiscent of a targeting redirect. Looks very missile-like. Besides, where's the fun in it being a plane?

The news video also seems to show a bright spot at the tip, which a plane isn't going to have, unless it's just a reflection off its fusalage.

We were the battalion hq tank section, and the platoon sergeant was a good guy. Covered for him in formation and had every intention of punishing him at our level, but when the story came out he started laughing and settled for don't. Let it happen again :lol:

Well for those of you who've seen an airliner come over the horizon straight towards you, it DOES kind of look like a rocket taking off.

I would also like to know, if it was really a missile, why was it moving so slow? If you say that's only because it was so far away, well the further it is away, the more people would have seen it, and the mystery would have been solved.

They video I used above for reference is the best I've seen. I've seen several airliners, cargo jets and miltary tankers on clear days over water and over land in my 2000+ flying hours and never have I thought that might be a rocket/missle. If you zoom in close enough on a jet contrail you will notice 2 distinct lines usually that remain distinct for a while before they converge. As far as the slow moving goes, Since the object is approx 35 miles away, it looks like it is going pretty fast. If you think that is weird, try watching a C-5 on take-off roll, It looks like its going about 50mph when it lifts off. And I think the light you are seeing is actually the flame from a rocket/booster motor if you were looking from behind instead of off the front...

If this location is correct (and I'm not sure how the news thinks they're qualified to come up with that), then all the residents of Catalina Island, as well as anyone who happened to be sailing that day, would have seen it, and they would have submitted tons of videos on Youtube with alternative angles on it.
