Study tying vaccine to autism was fraud, report says

Andrew Wakefield, colleagues altered facts about patients in their research, analysis shows

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40930256/ns/health-mental_health/

If one un-vaccinated child dies, this prick should be charged with murder.

One of many examples of how repeating a lie, enough times, makes people believe it's true.

Additionally, the original study linked the mercury (thimerosal), that is used in some vaccines, as the cause of Autism. Not all of these vaccines use thimerosal. In fact, in Canada, the MMR vaccine hasn't contained it since 1997.

Will this finally slap a muzzle on Jenny McCarthy? I doubt it.

Just watched an old episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit! that talked about this report being bogus... apparently, this is really old news. Nice to see it reported 10+ years after the fact...

People have had issues with the study for a while. Having a sample size of only 12 children renders it pretty useless on its own, even if this guy had followed proper methodology. It takes time to demonstrate it is completely bogus though. CNN had a much more detailed article on this, including the fact that this former doctor was paid around half a million dollars for the study by a group of lawyers looking to sue the vaccine makers. I linked to that story below.

This kind of research typically uses "double-blind" methodology to try and prevent bias from affecting the results. I tend to think the scientific community should institute a new version of that where those conducting the research don't know who is actually paying for the research. Ignoring that large checks create a bias of their own is pretty naive.

This is the first time that the word FRAUD has been used, with respect to the study. The methodology has already been called into question, as has the fact that larger statistical samples did not reflect his premise.

This guy is scum and should be dealt with. I don't really know what if anything can be done to him other than to pull his medical license, which I think has already been done but he should have to pay for his dishonesty.

Now with Jenny McCarthy...what has she done that is so bad ? She has a son with Autism right ? I haven't really listened to much she has said...she's more of something that should be seen and not heard right ?

I think he's still licensed to practise in the US, bu this license was definitely pulled in Britain.

McCarthy has been an evangelist for this crap spouting it at anyone who will listen, and a whole bunch who would rather not hear her.

Especially if said axe involves them being able to shuffle the responsibility away from anything they did as parents, or their own possible defective genetic heritage.

Man a couple in my Jiu Jitsu class has 4 kids, one of them is autistic. I've seen her wearing a shirt that references the vaccine/autism link, so I got the gist that is what they think caused their son's autism... I wonder how they're feeling about it now...

Racing? Like, watching people race? This kid has it pretty bad. He does seem to enjoy watching his brothers grapple....but he can't really communicate, at least not with any strangers.

Then post links to the proof.

I've seen examples of MJ having very significant effects on the symptoms of people with Autism but I have never heard that eating one brownie means that you are instantly and permanently cured.

I'm sure that if you chose 12 random children with autism, and then modified the results of testing prior to posting your findings, you could very easily support your claim. Hell, it worked for the other guy ;)

The problem is:

When those of us that know better see claims of seal raping, those people / sources get immediately ignored as whack-jobs.

The same thing happens when the opposite side makes equally outlandish claims. ;)

I don't want to ignore your posts. I actually enjoy them.

8.5 times out of 10 you offer decent insight and food for thought. You'll bring some ideas that are not often represented in mainstream society. I've found myself doing research and learning based on some of the information you have brought forth.

The problem is that when you go off on your extreme tangents, it is hard to tell what is "Kaneman trying to be funny" and what is "Kaneman got stoned while listening to NPR and is now convinced that baby seals smoking pot have found the cure for autism."

I agree that people should be educated. Education can bring about change...

I've actually never listened to NPR.

Its all good, I didn't think you were "attacking" me, you just phrased it like "why do we have to listen to you....you know, like it was a chore or something.

Didn't expect to be taken seriously on the autism cure. For the record, no, Marijuana does not cure autism. However, what mothers who are willing to risk going to prison for their children are finding out is that in edible form there are some very real and significant improvements being made by THC ingesting autistic kids.

Is there going to be real scientific research that backs up what the mothers are claiming? No, no there's not. So its one of those things that if you already know about the tons of benefits from the Cannabis plant then its not a stretch to believe their claims. But if you don't, and you call bullshit on Marijuana as a medicine, then you're not going to buy this either.

I pulled NPR out of my ass because I knew Glenn Beck would be shot down immediately.

Sorry about taking the MJ comment seriously. It has absolutely shown to have some very positive effects on people with ASD.

If you had said that, I would have given you a :dthumb: but it looked like you may be serious and were grossly overstating the benefits.

The comment about having to listen was more to say: "If you didn't believe in this stuff, you wouldn't be so passionate about it."

It's been a stressful day.
