View Full Version : My computer just went out
Yep that sucks. Was on the torotech website and it downloaded some thing, all of a sudden I had a few virus protection software programs, so I unplugged the network cable, then the printer program opened up and the computer shut off. Blue screen is all I get now, can't boot it in safe modee either.
Losing any data isn't a problem, I backed up to a external hd a few days ago, just pissed that its gonna cost me a bunch of money.
I'm already considering a new computer, getting it fixed will probably be an arm and a leg, plus this one was already a few years old.

Cost you money? I assume you don't have a copy of Windows? I generally wipe and reload everything every year or so just out of principle. ghosting ftmfw.

Really dude, this isn't the end of your computer, just the OS installation.
Step one: Dowload Ubuntu Linux. You can boot it from the CD, NO INSTALL NEEDED (you'll need access to another computer to download and burn the disk), and with it booted, you can access all your data. You can also wipe the Windows directory (make sure you grab anything in that in terms of prefs or whatever, that you may want first).
Next, boot with a Windows install disk, and follow the prompts to install.
PM me if you need an XP install disk.

Probably. Got a geek you could borrow a known good one from to verify? Computer store with a liberal return policy?

Pop the lid and see if any of the capacitors on the main board are popped first. If the P/S does this every time that you hit the power button, then it could be a main board rather than power supply.
If it's a notebook, like Drewpy said, then a dead battery can pull the system down too. Pop it out and try running it plugged into the wall.

This. Blown caps are generally pretty easy to spot... Pretty much all three varieties in one picture, how convenient!:

Well if you're going to DL Ubuntu, you could just run that as your OS... Given the amount of morons I've seen posting shit online about running it, setup, configuration, and use have to be more friendly then the last time I tried Linux... 10+ years ago.
Found an operating system disk, but now I get a diskette drive 0 seek failure, then the blue screen

The blue screen is the HAL layer failing to load...but this means you're already into the OS boot. Put the Windows CD in the drive, hit the reset button, and when the computer first lights, press DEL to get into the BIOS (or whatever keystroke is prompted onscreen), and make sure the CD is set to bootable in the BIOS.
Edit: If Drive A: is set in the boot search order, turn it off. Sounds like your A: Drive may have shit the bed.
No blown caps, and I was able to start formatting my hd

We weren't suggesting you had blown caps... that was in response to the power up issue posted by Pickle. It's amusing that you looked though.

Yeh, I'm gonna loose a 3 page essay I wrote last week for english and some porn but that's it. I did a backup of all my stuff last week to an external hard drive.

It took all of 2 seconds, the side just slides off, it did give me good reason to clean out 4 years worth of dust accumulation, the heat sink for the processor was completely covered, and I doubt it had any airflow through it as it was.
Other than that, I'm glad I can give you some measure of joy in your otherwise bleak and howell hopeless life

This is why external harddrive enclosures fucking rock. I've got ide for 3 and 2.5 and sata. Saved my bacon quite a few times

External hard drives and DirSync are even better, because they keep you backed up on a schedule.

A cheaper, safer, and IMHO easier alternative is to have multiple internal drives. My PC runs 4... one for movies, one for TV shows, one for other stuff (games, pr0n, pictures, personal files, etc), and one for the OS. 4.66TB of storage joy.

Unless you're running a RAID configuration, or doing a cross-backup, all that you're doing is creating multiple points of failure.

I have my win7 computer setup as follows
2 int 500gb drives
1 int 1TB drive
1 ext 1TB drive connected by eSata
first 500gb drive has all the system\programs crap
Photos and music are kept on the second 500gb drive, with the photos library synched up to the 1Tb drive, which also houses movies, email backups (synched) and app installs (iso's), .
The external drive has a synched backup of music and a second synched backup of photos. It also holds the backup system images.
I also have an external usb drive with system images of my base Win7 installs for my Main computer (gaming), Laptop (media center) and second desktop (older P4 that I use for stuff that I dont want to clutter up the main computer with. Also has a backup of all my software installs)
All else fails I have an Ubuntu 10.10 box (which also has a Winxp vm running on it).
Then I have my work laptop...which I really should be using right now but I'm typing in this thread to procrastinate being its close to end of day.
Fuck you derf

I only use laptops these days. Don't backup shit either. Cept maybe my music and /d/ folder. Enclosures really come into play when one of the computers gets a bug or comes due for a fresh install

Certainly makes sense when using a laptop.

I had a WD HDD that I pulled from my PC when I upgraded. It worked fine when pulled. I bust it out a couple weeks ago and the damn thing just makes the clunk noise of death, hence my thread I made about it. I have it in the freezer right now.

If there's a 3.5" floppy in the unit, unplug it, and remove it from the BIOS.
You still use floppies?
nope, I havnt seen a floppy since the 90s. I went into the bios and disabled the floppy drive that its looking for, I also tried enabling it but making it the last thing to boot from, neither worked.
wait, wait, wait. Dont know what I did but it seems to have worked, for now
And now I cant get any drivers to work....
Everything online has links to download them, but I need the drivers for the network card before I can connect
Wd sucks
Ive been using WD VelociRaptor 10k RPM gaming drives exclusively for years now, and I have never had a problem with any of the 3 I have owned.
