I've never heard of that before.
Very cool.
Here is a link to the "full" story. http://sparkreport.net/2009/03/the-full-story-behind-the-great-tennessee-pot-cave/

Solar panels and no one would have ever known.

Solar panels running that much lightning, water pumps, hydraulics, electric motors, HVAC, and heating/cooling units?

High efficiency panels, and some supplemental passive systems, and I'd say yeah; it's within the realm of possible.

Ummmm... No.
Diesel generators... big fucking diesel generators.
I've seen guys bury tractor trailers in their yard and shit, but this thing is fucking awesome... way beyond what I would expect.
Now, if he was REAL smart, he would have built it inside a fucking cave that had some underground river running through it to set up some sort of turbine system to generate the juice... Of course, that's what they always say about real estate... location, location, location.

Once again, Canadians have to show you how it's done.

Whoever edited that video needs to go back to grade school and learn how to spell.
The solar array would have to be fairly large, people would get suspiscious. All those lights are a shit ton of load.

Would have to be a fairly large river to get any kind of power output and people would notice if he stuck a dam on it.
Or dude could have just paid his fucking bill each month and nobody would be the wiser.

Depends how big the cave.... nobody would notice a dam inside a cave... cause it's inside a cave.

He was leaching off the grid, separate from his normal utilities... generally people tap into the water system to do this...

Yeh but if he was using the normal grid, and paying his bill who would have cared? All dude has to say is that the lights and TVs stay on 24/7, pay his enourmous bill and rake in the $$$$ from selling some weed. The way it is, dude got caught because he was stealing electricity

Lights and TV.... WAY beyond lights and TV... like, "I have my 100,000 gallon Olympic lap pool heated to 90º year round" sort of electric bill... Not the sort of shit you can easily explain away.

Yeah if anything they would of caught on MUCH earlier because of the huge bill. Each of those lights is about 1000 watts.. Pretty easy to do the math from there..

I've heard there are now LED grow lights, but I imagine that is solely for very small grow ops, like a "grow your own" type of thing. Anybody know if there is any truth to that? Granted, you'd still need temperature control units, which can easily cause a high utility bill.

With the LEDs you get the equivalent of a 600watt hps bulb with a 100watt LED basically. They really don't give off any heat so you save a lot of money on hvac as well. They are expensive, but they last like 10 years.. I've seen some mixed results with how they work..

The amount of power you would need to be self sufficient would get noticed when you shut off the river heading out of the cave to get the shit in place and built. Considering how important a water source of that size would be, it would definitely not go unnoticed. This couldn't be done on some tiny little creek.

Yeah I don't think building a hydroelectric damn is very practical.

You could do like the farmers do. Have fields of corn and grow that shit in the middle. Of course you'll have to shoot down any prop plane that tries to fly over your land.

this video is super old, i am surprised nobody here saw this years ago.
electric bill is one of the factors that LEOs use to locate grow operations. If the bill is abnormally large, you get red flagged for further investigation.
LED has become the new top of the line lighting system of choice for Reef lighting, and also gardening. however it is very expensive per sq/ft, and they still draw a decent amount of juice at the intensity required for plant / animal sustenance.

they are using the power usage down here to pop growers, litterally they monitor the electric bill and if your usage goes up, like way the fuck up, they report it to the cops
