Nope, I have a small trailer (4X8) and I don't want to own a truck so.... For the 2 or 3 short trips we take with the bikes a year, this will be fine I think...

How much? I spoke early on the trailer and was going to pick one up at Tractor Supply tomorrow. They have a 4X8 without the floor for $369 and will take the HF 20% coupon. 9 2X6 treated planks cost $45 at Lowes. I already have ramps, wheel chocks, etc.

I got my 5x8 trailer at Lowes for $500 OTD. had an expanded metal floor and ramp with bracing. I didn't like the stability of just the expanded metal so I bolted some OSB that I had to the floor of the trailer, left the ramp alone. Works very well for my needs.

To be honest, I'm guessing this will tow better than my old 4 banger S-10 did back in the day... A couple people here were like afraid I'd damage my engine/trans but I believe the Mustang Gt share a engine with the F150 so... Anyway, 200 lb trailer+ 2*400 lb bikes= no problem, I'd imagine. I will change my programmer setting just in case though....

If I was able to tow 2 bikes on a bike trailer with my little teeny weenie ford focus, then your mustang should be all right. Only thing is, when going up hill, if the car feels liek its lagging, or the flooor gets super hot, pull over and wait for your trans to cooldown, then buy and install a trans cooler. But I dont really see that ever happening

The engine is similar, but not identical. And the trans is different.
Regardless, you should be fine, i believe they are rated at ~2000 lbs. If pulling in hills or stop and go, just pull it out of OD.

Looks good & well hidden. I've had one on my old beater integra which has hauled a bike or two many miles - did so again this past w/e. A buddy with a truck laughed at it when he first saw it at a Gap trip, until I pointed out that my load (1 bike + gear) was exactly the same as his, and I made it there @ ~25mpg - roughly double his mileage hauling. :)

I wouldn't worry much about that motor/trans towing a small trailer - I mean, there are similar hitches designed for MiniCoopers that fit into the fog light on the bumper. I have a few customers that tow their bikes in with them... if a Mini can do it, surely a Mustang can.

Finished my trailer today. I bought a 4x8 at TSC without a floor, bought treated 4x6 at Home Depot and mounted my wheel chocks. I went with a forward/backward thing to balance it out. Tongue weight is 125 loaded so not too bad. I pulled it around town in heavy traffic and it did well. I am cautiously optimistic.

Okay, I'm back, Carry-On Trailer co. I got TSC to honor a HF 20% coupon on top of a sale they were having which has me down $340 for the whole thing including deck, screws, etc. All told, I'm into this for about $550 including the hitch, the ramps, the chocks, etc. Not too bad considering I was dropping about $2-300 every time we wanted to go on a trip and having to plan it out around the rental, weather, etc. Now we can load and go whenever we want!:rockwoot:

Shopping for a spare next week and I have my car's jack which fits under there well. I also have a couple bottle jacks that I'm considering... I might get a tongue box for the straps, jack, etc. I don't want to over do it though. This is intended for short, infrequent trips not cross country or anything.
Do yourself a favor, and replace the wheel bearings with some high quality units, it will be a few dollars but you wont ever have to worry about all of a sudden why the trailer is pulling the car left and right while you are driving down the highway. It seems that the wheel bearings are the weak point on them (also on the HF trailers), and the mesh floor which you already fixed.
Other than that, good deal

Yea, I'm considering the bearings with buddies but I'm going to get a couple trips out of these... It depends, I'm considering swapping the 12'' tires for 15'' tires and keeping the 12'' tires for back ups or selling them. The bigger the tire, the slower it spins at any given speed, the longer the bearings last.

Those HF jobbies are hard to beat for the value - just takes a little extra planning & hardware to set them up right.
One thing to keep an eye on are the flimsy bent fender brackets. After they bounce & vibrate around a while and/or get (easily) bent a few times I've seen them fatigue & break right off (fortunately not moving!). Probably wouldn't mess up your shit - but sure could ruin somebody's day behind you! (and cause an ins. claim)
On the bearings, they might last the life of the trailer just fine - but if you haven't already I'd suggest pulling the axles & cleaning-out/replacing the crap grease in there - as much as anything to make sure the axle nut is snugged-down properly. I found that both were too loose on the one I assembled - that'll kill the bearings quick, as I'm sure you know. Also makes a convenient time to identify the bearing #s and at least make note of what they are 'just in case'.
Edit: thought it was the h/f you had there - I bet that one's a few notches better in parts/quality. Kick-ass they honored the H/F coupon - I'll keep that in mind. Looks good!

Ha mind reader! I was just thinking, WTF is he talking about? Yea the TSC trailers have a decent rep and it's all welded, each weld inspected by me! Besides, it came with 12'' five lug wheels and I didn't have to assemble it!!! Decent lights, frame etc... the TSC trailer out weighs the HF trailer by almost 100 lbs and it doesn't have the added fold up trailer hardware. I looked at Lowes, TSC and HF and decided to go for the "middle" option. The trailer was on sale for $300 so I rolled for about $260 otd. Went to HD, which is going out of business. 9 4X6X8 treated planks for about $30, 100 #12 2'' drillers $10, car wiring kit $3, etc. I already had ramps and Condor style locking chocks from HF so no further expense there. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and labor. Yee Haw!

I may still go back to hers 2' back from mine because I think that it looks cool! Because of the axle location, I really wanted to place the heaviest part of her bike on the back, so....:idk:
I never said it was a rational fear, just what h goes thorough my mind when I see a backwards bike

I always worry that it will "jump out" of the chock when I hit the brakes.... Of course, if that were possible then the same would be true of acceleration....

Back when I had the 5' wide open trailer with rails I did not use wheel chocks...just straps so that's why I initially wondered about it fitting with a 4' wide trailer.
Chocks are definitely the way to go.

Especially the locking chocks like these. I roll the bike in and it stands up by itself so I don't have to mess around with kick stands or whatever. 100% easier than regular chocks and 1,000,000% easier than without any chocks-been there, done that.
I'm really thinking about going with option 2. both forward, one bike to the front and one 2' back. It leaves a really nice spot for a strap, jack, tools, etc box.

5' minus space for the wheel wells. Anyway, I've fit 3 bikes in a truck bed, not all sport bikes, but its possible, just really tight.

I think I remember that happening to some guy on the old Florida forum I was on... Ripped some of the plastics off...

I need to pick up a pair of those then...much easier. :rockwoot:

Do you not tie down the back of the bike at all? Doesn't it bounce side to side?

i usually throw straps on the back of bikes just to keep them from moving around too much.
BTW I used to haul my 3 wheelers with a '79 firebird w/400 in it. yes it had air shocks and fat tires. LOL

A hitch on a car is as gay as my man thong.
I used to have a hitch on my '71 Chevelle.
I towed everything with that fucking car. It was a beast.
I got a ticket once, in upstate NY, towing a VW Squareback on a tow bar; 79 MPH.

$900...more than I wanted to put into an open trailer but when I ran across this one...read about it and saw how much they cost new (too much) tempation got the best of me.
It's a 2005 model but had recently installed new tires...bearings...hubs...casters...tail lights and something else that I can't remember. It has some cosmetic blemishes from use but overall in real decent shape and is easy to store out of the way. The bike tire rails come off to make a flatbed and I may have some brackets welded on so I can even add some wood side rails for hauling stuff.
Instead of taking a utility trailer and making it a motorcycle trailer I'm doing the opposite.
It was on NCSportbikes.com...saw it Sunday and bought it Monday.

Reminds me of a Tredmill that folds up. Neat idea actually if you live somewhere with limited space.
just googled what they retail for...Nice pickup!

Yea I was not planning to put that much in an open trailer...especially after seeing some of the ideas posted here but liked the stand up storage part since I'm limited for storage of a trailer. I don't have to pay to store it elsewhere or have to keep it at a friends house or anything. Nice to have it right here...can stand it up in the garage or just outside of it.
The wife got her bonus and said get it so I hopped in the Jeep Monday morning first thing since I was off for President's Day and was rolling toward Raleigh to get it.
With her bonus I didn't have to tap in to my Rottweiler $$.

You know that the $300 Harbor Freight trailer stands up too, right?...
Not that I'm saying that it's just as good or anything, because it isn't but....

^^^Actually I didn't but I'm good with this trailer...bringing it back home the other night rolling 75 or so down the interstate it tracked so well I had to keep looking back in my side mirrors to even know it was still there. Had it not been for the timing of her bonus and this trailer popping up on a local site and my day off... I'd probably have the HF trailer or something similar soon.
