View Full Version : Taking the plunge to synthetic

My car needs an oil change so I've decided to take the plunge to synthetic. I'm being told that it is better since my car is turbo-charged. I never thought I'd be doing this, but I am.

I suppose the only thing I'll notice is that I won't have to change it so often  and that when I do change it, I'll be forking over more money... not really a surprise with this car.

What kind are you putting in it?

I put Mobil 1 in my truck (6 quarts) and I've found, as much as I hate to say it Wal-Mart is the cheapest around.

By a huge margin in my experience. I think they had the gallon jugs on sale recently... I think it was about $16/gallon vs $25/gallon at Advance Auto.:idk:

I was going to use Mobil 1 even though I have been faithful to Valvoline for conventional oil. I don't care about the cost difference between the two, it is minor and even if not... I hear Mobil 1 is some of the best.

Damn, I should come to your Wal-Mart, it is like $24.50 at mine for the Mobil 1 syn in gallon jug. I hate to see how much it is at a parts store.

Aw shoot, like I said, I think it was on sale and that was a while ago. To be honest, I change the oil in the bikes but for $15 I let AAA change the oil in the cars.

I've been doing semi-synthetic for a while. I just couldn't justify the additional cost of full synthetic. However, the semi- is getting up there in price so I may just go full- as well.

I considered the blended stuff, but figure if I'm going to do this then why not all or nothing.

You should see what Gas can do. IIRC he deals with Amsoil. I wonder how the prices are for that.

Officially, about $9/qt and $36/gallon for 5W30-typical sports car oil.

Gas and I both. Prob is for us to have it shipped to you it often offsets the cost savings, depending of course on how big a order it is.

IF you order a case or more at a time, price isn't bad. Like I told OSP, if you want just a gallon, better off paying retail in the store.

Make sure they actually change the filter, some won't. I watched them dump the old oil out, lower the car and put fresh oil in. complaining to a manager got me the excuse that the guy was new, a new oil change, and a 50% off, but who knows how often that happens

I just buy it there and get the hell out as fast as I possibly can. I change the oil myself. Only 2 things I buy at Wal Mart for the most part, oil and ammo (mostly shotgun shells)

Air filter, oil filter, oil, and ammo (when they have it). I use Mobil 1 extended life full synth that is supposed to be good for 15k miles. I change it every 10k or so.

Agree, except the filter I get from the dealer. Can't quite break that one, probably won't either.

Now ya tell me. I came home with Mobil 1. I thought about getting the extended life but wasn't sure about 15K miles with no oil change. This whole synthetic thing is new so I'm going one step at a time.

I just need to get hubby to help me put it on the ramps and I'll be set to change. Yeah, I could do that part myself, but it always makes me sooo nervous I just can't. He needs to do something anyway.

I switched to Syn after 10k on my rebuild. Have been doing fine for months and now it seems to be losing it. God I hope it's not burning it. I'll be switching back to dino next time.

Yes.

I'd change it more often with a turbo, especially if it's just oil cooled but I'm sure yours is water cooled.

Changing oil is the same as changing tires. Do it when you feel like it needs to be done.

I can get you amsoil at cost + S&H shipped to your house.

Fuck Amsoil...all their tests show their oil is the best done by guess who? Amsoil. LOL

Wally World has Castrol Full Syn 5qts for 21 bucks. That is about 6 or so dollars more than regular. The price difference isn't that great and with turbo charged gas engines, the oil gets hella hot.

The Subie has gotten Mobil 1 Full Synthetic as of today. I wanted to change last weekend but I needed hubby's help. I wanted to see how it worked with the cold temps this past weekend but since I didn't get to it until today, I can only hope for more cold temps.

I know. I couldn't believe that I was actually typing that but the changing of the weather has little to no affect on me.

YOU won't notice anything different. You're engine will, but the human will not.
