Bronx teacher admits: I'm an ex-hooker

Meet Melissa Petro -- the teacher who gives a new twist to "sex ed."
The tattooed former hooker and stripper has been teaching art in a Bronx elementary school for three years, The Post has learned.
Calling herself a "for mer sex worker," the well-liked teacher has been shockingly up front about her past -- posting online accounts of her sexcapades in Mexico and Lon don.
But in her boldest move, the 30-year-old posted an essay this month claiming she also had been a pros titute.
"From October 2006 to January 2007, I accepted money in exchange for sexual services I provided to men I met online in what was then called the 'erotic services' section of Craigslist.org," wrote Petro on The Huffington Post, using her real name and picture.
The attached bio identifies Petro, who has an MFA in creative nonfiction from The New School, as a "former sex worker, researcher, writer, educator, and feminist."
It appears she managed to keep her shenanigans a secret from parents at PS 70 -- who were stunned by the revelation.
"I don't want nobody that used to do that to be around my kid," said Grace Ventura, whose son is in third grade. "People like that should not be allowed to be anywhere near children."
Yocelyn Quezada said perhaps Petro had managed to turn her life around, but she still fumed that a former money honey was teaching two of her three kids.
"She's not a good role model. I do not want my daughters to find out about this," Quezada said, "and I do not want my daughters to be around that kind of person."
Despite predicting in one online posting that "that this would be a conversation I'd someday be compelled to have," Petro declined twice to speak with The Post.
Principal Kerry Castellano referred questions to the Department of Education's press office, which said Petro had been reassigned to administrative duties pending an investigation
But Petro's posts show she was warned by at least two school staffers -- including one administrator -- that her refusal to be more cautious about her history could land her in hot water.
"In an off the record conversation, a sympathetic administrator kindly asked if I couldn't publish under a pseudonym. I wish, for her sake, I could," Petro recently wrote on The Rumpus, an online magazine.
Petro, who earns $61,000 a year, also wrote that a co-worker had warned her that some of her colleagues were beginning to Google her.
"There have been lots of rumors going around about her for a while now," one school worker told The Post. "I wouldn't want my kid to be in a school where she is."

Ok, it's one thing if you had a shady past, but turned your life around... That's cool...
But...
This fucking bitch seems proud of it... I don't think I'd have concern about a former stripper/hooker teach my kid how to make a clay ashtray or whatever... People do retarded stuff and clean themselves up to becoming productive members of society... I would however, question the sanity of some crazy ass bitch who's posting shit online like this... I mean, at least TRY to keep your skeletons in the closet.

$61K for teaching art in elementary school? After only 3 years?
Anywhere else and that'd be only like $28K
Anyone want to bet she was looking for a book deal or something similar? But yeh, she should have used a different name, or at least been less up front about it.

I'm willing to bet that the kids in question are receiving very little supervision at home. I wouldn't be surprised if those kids were exposed to worse "role models" at home.

It doesn't matter if it is paid every two weeks, monthly or in one lump sum.

Ok, let me rephrase. Their pay is calculated over the amount of hours they're supposed to work and then spread out through the year. They don't get free money when they're off for the summer.

NYC cost of living is higher than podunk your town, 60k doesnt go far, its like earning 12k a year anywhere lese in the US, especially when a 2 br apt goes for 2k/month rent. to get teachers to work they have to pay them that much money or the teachers would all flock to other areas where they could afford to live

Just because the rent is really high doesn't mean every other cost of living is all that different. Do cars in NY cost a lot more than they do elsewhere? No. Do groceries cost a lot more? Beer? Clothing? No. So, I don't agree that $60K in NY is like $12K anywhere else.
Just because rent is about 3 times the US average doesn't mean every other type of cost is 3 times as high. Do cars cost 3 times as much? No. Do groceries cost 3 times as much? No. So, I don't agree that $60K in NY is like $12K anywhere else.
Cars don't cost more, but gas is prolly $.30/gal more expensive, gotta pay for parking, and insurance will cost a few grand for a year, wanna drive somewhere, its gonna cost you $20 in tolls to get to staten island, $15 to get in and out of manhatten, so the car might be the same price, but the cost to operate one is way higher. Food is also somewhat higher, and if you live in the city you gotta pay city tax, even if you don't own a house. Movies start at $15, pizza $4 per slice, the list goes on and on.
Just because the actual cost of something is similar doesnt mean that the 2nd and 3rd order affect costs dont shoot through the roof.

60K in NYC isn't much. However, if you can forgo car ownership and deal with the apartment selection you can do ok. Its fine for a young single person. I know people who live ok on less. Considering the cost of living in NYC, its appropriate for an elementary school teacher with proper certs\education.
Its not really worth it though working NYC public schools because of the kids. the lowest common denominators will make any teacher jaded after a few years (as in 1-2) Best bet is to pay your dues there and then find something in the suburbs.

Even relying on public trans is gonna cost $1500 a year, and how many folks are lucky enough for the nycbe to place them in a school where they want to work?
A good friend of mine who lives past tommy on long island (massapequa) starts as a middle school teacher next year in staten island, its gonna be a 2 hour commute each way for her plus $20 in tolls a day, plus gas, for a 30 mile commute! I fully expect her to get a job on the island somewhere next year or the year after but suburban schools out there wont touch you unless youve worked in the city school system for a while first

Lmao, Homeslice...Do you really think that NYC is the same cost of living as other parts of the US?
Hell, My car insurance varies County to County in NJ...and Gas is different from town to town based on how middle class to lower middle class it is...By up to .10 in some areas. I cant even imagine what it is in NY
And yes, Groceries do infact cost more...The price of food in general costs more...Some movie theaters by me are one price where another one one town over is another...And when i was in FL in Jan...I paid for THREE People and paid 18 dollars....That doesnt even get me TWO people here in jersey.
Dont even get me started on if your a smoker...NYC is like 13 a pack now IIRC for The name brand Ciggs.
Numero 2.
Check, suburban schools have the opportunity to hire the better teachers that emerge from the city school system. There is also a huge surplus of teachers in the NYC area.

And the higher prices really do mostly trace their costs back to three things: property cost/rent, transportation, and the NYC tax.
Property cost is the big one, if you rent a store front for 5-10k a month depending on the area(yes thats a very real number for a small store) you have to make that up by charging higher prices, Jonesboro Township Arkansas might have the same sized store, with a parking lot, and less crime for 1-2k a month
Everything cost more to get into the city, trucking is super expensive, as well as fuel cost, labor, liscensing, time etc... The cost is probably double or triple for the same freight as some podunk town or most other cities.
And finally the NYC tax. Really 2 seperate taxes. In addition to state and federal tax, the city has a 3rd tax on everything, products, services, salaries, you name it. Plus this is New Fucking York City dude shit should cost more because its from New Fucking York City.
Dont get me wrong, there are some great deals to be had, the best hamburger joint in the entire 5 borough is a place called roll'n roaster in Sheepshead Bay, for $5 you get a burger side of onion rings or mozzerlla sticks, and a soda, and I'm not talking about Mcdonalds burgers, I'm talking real meat that is not grade C or lower 10% real meat mcdonalds meat, I'm talking fresh ground grade A slab hamburger that you gotta contemplate how the hell you are gonna get it in your mouth. Bodegas, illegal cigs that are brought up from the carolinas by the truckload and sold street side. Plus some of the best ethnic foods around, and real pizza, not the crap that the rest of the world eats. it has its good parts, but it will cost ya.

You have a point bro but I used to live in DC, another cost of living monster, and it's incredible the difference between Grand Rapids, Mi and there. Let me put it in perspective, over 20 years ago, it cost $45/day to stay at the Y, $5-600/month to rent a room and people were making over $10/hr to work at Mc Donalds!:panic:

Hell, I've never made over $40k in my life so I'd love to see $60k! Of course, I pay less than $700/month for rent and all utilities, live three miles from work, have zero city tax, etc so I guess that it balances out to an extent.:idk:

No, not an exageration, we actually meant that $12,000.18 is equal to $59,999.96. It just wasnt worth it for the few cents not to round out the numbers, however from this point on, I expect everyone to use those exact numbers.
