I am going to be replacing them in my futura in the next week or so. I have to order a set but will start disassembly tomorrow. Any tips or advice on doing the job. I went through it in the manual and it doesnt look too bad but figured if anyone has any tips to make the job easier I will gladly take it ;)
Step 1: set bike on fire
Step 2: call insurance company, its italian they won't ask questions
Step 3: buy new bike

trust me I entertained the thought. If it hits 100k miles I may do that and put it on youtube LOL

You using tapered-roller vs. ball-bearings?
That'd be my main advice, beyond not dropping your shit on the floor 'cus you used bungee cords and drywall anchors to hang it. :)

Thanx for all the helpful coments you bastids. I am blessed with a centerstand so I can weight the rear and put some blocks of wood underneath the motor.
Kerry, guys on the aprilia forum have used both and said the regular ball bearrings worked just fine compared to the tapered rollers. I gotta look around on line to order a set today anyway.

Yeah, ball bearings work fine & have a *little* less drag than tapered-roller - they just don't last as long or handle as much abuse. Keep your monster stand-up wheelies & jumping to a minimum and they should give you plenty of service though. :)
Oh - races in the freezer for a while + gently heating the neck = easy installation.

Keep the bearing race puller IN LINE WITH THE STEM NECK! If you're not careful and overly enthusiastic (especially with a slide hammer type puller), you'll wind up 'egging' the neck out or jamming the race into the sides of the steering neck. ;) If you're going to 'tap' them out from the opposite side, small taps in a circular pattern, over and over again work best to avoid the aforementioned pitfalls. Usually if you get one out, the use of a socket of appropriately close tolerances can act as a driver to remove the other one without the tap-around-in-circles routine.

already need a special tool, I need a 14mm hex bit to get the cap off the top of the triple. Figured its easier just to hit sears vs rigging something up with a few nuts and bolts.
