Mr Lefty

it is the F650gs... they redesigned it in 08 or 09... but it's a 800cc twin...

previously they were actual 650cc singles... and looked like this

You would think a Japanese engine would last longer than 23k, even being a single.

What oil did you use? Did you beat the shit outta it?

I got almost 40k on my 06 EX500 and she runs pretty damn good. She loves the Rotella 5W40 Full Syn.

yes I would... I would expect a Japanese motor to last a hell of a lot longer than 23k...

I used mostly Suzuki 10-40 (maybe 5-40) every 1k until 14k... then suzi full syn every 3k from then on... changed the filter every oil change(suggested every other)

I wouldn't say I beat the shit out of her, but I ride a lot... long days and loaded up... but I specifically avoided freeways when possible due to the high RPM's

Did you mean to put "21 Jan 11" instead of "21 Jan 10"?

No matter the date I'm really surprised it didn't last longer than that. It makes me skeptical of the DR-ZSM version being a much more reliable Supermoto.

The G650GS is the 650 single. They still make it. In 2009 they came out with both the G and the F - the F is now the detuned 800 twin. IMHO, the current F650 kicks ass over it's predecessor. My sister picked one up last year, it's a tremendous motorcycle.

me too... but the way the shop make it sound it's as if the bike wasn't ever designed to go past 15k :idk:

yeah you're right... I want the Dakar version... which is like the "adventure" or like the F800gs is to the new version (no directed at Mira... I know she knows her BMW Shit)

but honestly I think I'm gonna take a bit, wipe out my debt before I buy another... figure a year- two year break would put me at 0 debt... but damn it's gonna suck

I'm thinking the same thing. See if you can get something cheap or even a basket case you can work on. At least that way you wouldn't be completely bikeless.

If it's just rings and a piston, it shouldn't cost you much to get it fixed and even less to do it yourself.

hopefully not much.... but I want to sell it... have for a bit now... it's not at all suited to the type of riding I do... a good bike but not the right one.

going bikeless isn't the end of the world... and I'm tired of living pay check to pay check because my budget is tight meeting my bills and riding eats into my left over "play money"

I've done that too long... I'm tired of it... I'm getting this sorted and saving up on the side...(it'll serve as an emergency fund until my debt is gone.. then it'll be my bike $)

Since when did common sense and responsibility become the "norm" around a sportbike forum? Why must we age past our stupidity and naive nature. This makes for a much more boring read while working in the lab. Please bring a Bulldog or other stupid idiot sent to amuse us. Thank you.

Damn, sucks to hear that. Hope you can make it without a bike, I know it was absolutely painful for me. But nice to hear you're looking at trying to get out of debt. If I had it to do over again, I'd have waited another year prior to buying my bike. Granted, I had a lot of fun this past summer, but it came at a cost, without a doubt.

What are the deals like on BMWs down there, these days? Might something like a Versys fill your needs, without emptying your wallet? They've got a pretty high revving engine and seem to have some aftermarket support worth mentioning, if ADVRider is anything to go by.

Mr Lefty

I have exactly $200 a month to live on as I'm putting everything into killing my debt and saving 600 a month as a "emergancy" fund.

I have 0 budget for a bike right now... sure I could make my budget "fit" a bike in... but I've been doing that for a couple years and I don't seem to make a dent in my debit as I keep overspending on parts, trips, and gear that I MUST have.

so to force myself to be honest... I'm going bikeless until I'm in the black. by then, I should have close to 8k in my savings to put towards a bike... not including tax returns (usually average about 2k back as I have 100 a month extra taken out)

my priorities have changed for the next two years...but my life goals haven... I'm riding around the world in 11-12 years... this is one huge step towards that goal.

You know, I've entertained the thought of selling my bike for the same reasons you've mentioned, even though I bought it less than a year ago. However, the only debts I have now are the bike and the house, so I'm going to keep the bike. Luckily, I already bought everything I "need" for the bike Only thing I need to do is watch my spending on trips with the bike.

As for the emergency fund, I've put back $1000 and all other money is going toward paying off the bike. I should be able to pay the bike off by October of this year, depending on how much I allocate to trips this summer. I definitely have to cancel my plans for the california trip, partly due to money, partly due to time with my daughter, partly due to difficulty taking off that much time from work at once. I hate to cancel it, but it's really the best thing at this time. :(

I really hope your medical issues don't cause you problems riding in the future, but do agree that a little time away won't be too difficult, although it will suck when summer rolls around and you see everyone riding.

Good luck on getting completely out of debt, and hopefully, staying out of debt for good.

Gotch. For me it's a no brainer, to have a bike, since I save almost $400.00 every month that I ride, because of parking fees and gas costs.

yes my intention is to live by cash as much as possible there after (HOPE'N my emergency fund will cover any issues that come down the road)

no I don't think I'll have any issues... just got back from a run.. not far probably a mile... but though my left leg fatigued quickly... I can do it! the only issue other than fatigue I had was trying to slow from a sprint... when more force is exerted on each leg to slow me down.... it wanted to buckle... but that's good news... just a strength issue... and I'll fix that

Gotch. For me it's a no brainer, to have a bike, since I save almost $400.00 every month that I ride, because of parking fees and gas costs.
yeah I hear ya... I would probably save close to $70 a month on gas alone... but I cant afford the upfront cost... and it becomes a discipline issue with myself... to only use it for commuting or at least have that intention first...

I still have the DRZ and it'll be a bit before I get that fixed but if it becomes a withdrawal issue I can feed my craving on it... but I'll be trying to sell it shortly after it's fixed (my intentions ATM) to speed up the debt killing.

How in the hell can the parts to rebuild it cost $1600 ?! That just does not seem right to me.

Did you get an itemized list for the parts? I wonder if that price has install markup built in?

I've been looking at new 2012 Super Ténéré Yamaha, but $14k is more than I want to spend.

I just read the review in Road Runner magazine and the initial impressions looked favorable...

There's a motorcycle salvage/junk yard in Alabama, can't remember the name, but they sell pretty much whatever you might need, I got my old honda engine from them. Brand new engine, not even 50 miles, bike fell off trailer, total loss and they just pulled it out, all connections still attached and freighted it to me. Great ppl to deal with too.

shipping the remains, he's going to look at it and decide if it'll be cheaper/easier for him to rebuild it, or just send me a new one. but it's gotta go to him for at least a core charge.

I think I may take the bike to the shop and have them put it back in though. I didn't realize just how much dexterity I needed working on things with my left. and how much hand strength I lost...

Is there anyone around you who could give you some help? It would suck to have to pay a shop for that especially when you just need a bit of extra strength.

not really... and actually I just talked to the shop... they're gonna let me put it in there, and where I need help they're gonna hook me up. The owner is a kick ass guy. he wont let me pay, but I think the least I can do is buy'm all lunch

less than $1 a lb... not bad IMO

Cool on both counts. That shipping rate is pretty damn good too. I'm paying $5 to have .2lbs of gaskets shipped via UPS ground to me right now. $25 per lb isn't so good.

So the motor and bike are at the shop, with my schedule the next couple weeks and the damn weather, I'd rather pay the $200+ and have it rather than it sit any longer
