After sitting on my ass for about 3-4 years, I started running last week. It is amazing how much better I feel both physically and mentally. I plan on running in a 5k next month. I used to be a gym rat years ago, but I just haven't been able to get motivated to get back to the gym. I wanted something I could do right out my front door. Anyone else run on a regular basis?

I tried getting back into running several times but its hard for me to be consistent right now with my school schedule. I pretty much gave up working out and eating lower calorie foods until I graduate in August. My classmate says- Oh Gina you will have more energy if you just work out 30 minutes a day. Me- Uh, I would have more energy if I got more sleep...

I run a few times a week if I am lucky, nick should be training, but ill let him chime in... haha
I started to run when I randomly isgned up for a half marathon last year, was totally worth it
I am on a slow roll up approach still, not really in training yet. I have started walking during lunch at work. Need to start walk/running at home. I will progress to running a mile and increase that as I go soon. I will probably start doing suicide sprints in the summer. I want to be able to run the Chimney Top trail at a moderate pace in it's entirity by the warrior race.

I usually get a decent run in once a week, with some walking in between days.
Working more on the ruck march for my red card training right now, since it's f'ing cold out and I hate running on a treadmill

5K every morning during warm weather. Ok 5-6 times a week. Reebok Run Tones.
I try to go like the 18 year olds but a 26 minute pace is about all I am good for. I was down to 23 min but could only muster that if I laid off for a couple days for prep and recovery...I think a good time would be 14-18 minutes?

Wilderness firefighting?
I attempted to go through the q course years ago and started to ruck march everywhere, got to the point where I was doing 1x week 6 mile run with a 50lb ruck, 1x week 12 mile/3hr, and 1x week 24 mile/6hr
Then I broke my ankle and that ended that.
Now I generally run between 1 and 3 times a week 2-5 miles. I dont enjoy it unless I do it with other people, I can't just run by myself. I also really like the eliptical machine, it really kicks my ass.

I run. Right now I'm not doing anything but weight training but in April I'll start training (running) again as I'm part of a running series (www.ohiochallengeseries.com). I completed around 14 races last year totaling just over 100 miles (plus 2 triathlons). Not sure how many miles I put in with training time. I know I don't run nearly as much as a lot of people that race with me.
I run on a regular basis and have for years. Still hate it. Will always hate it I suppose but there's no arguing that it works.

Yeah, requirement is a 3 mile march in under 45 min w/45lb ruck. I'm doing ~ 4 miles with a 50lb ruck 2-3 times a week. First time I tried was just the 3 miles, and killed that in 41 min. I'd like to do it in 35 min, but we'll see.

ETA: My chiro actually highly recommends them for anytime I am not at work, and they have had siginificant impact on how much better my body (knees, hips, back, etc) feel on a daily basis. Now if I could quit hurting myself and needing crutches on a regular basis I'd be golden.

Hey Rae,
Do you ever stand for long periods of times in them? I haven't bitten the bullet yet to buy them because I really don't run all that much but I am usually in really flat sneakers with no padding. But for standing all day in really flat shoes, my feet get really achy and my back is SCREAMING in pain by noon. I had to go buy a pair of Nike Air Maxes for the hospital. Just wondering if that is common to hurt if you are standing around all day (not necessarily walking) or is it just me?

I spent pretty much 96 hours in em. We went to Hershey Park and few other spot for a couple of days. Constant walking...standing in line, all the fun stuf of chasing the 2 and 5 (now 6)year old around the park.
I took them off to go to bed. Thats about it.
Any soreness of feet had nothing to do with the vibrams.

See Paul's response. I find that I am sorer wearing tennis shoes or my workboots than wearing my vibrams. Especially when I have to do something requiring me to stand still for periods of time.
But like we regular users have said before, sometimes you have to work your way up to it. If you get a pair you may find that your feet, especially the bottom will be sore until your feet adjust (your toes as well as they separate), you may also find that as your body reverts to how it should be your knees, back and hips will be achy and sore, but once you reach the point where your body should actually be for the best balance and posture, you're good to go and you will feel better overall.

So says someone who hasnt tried them or researched it. :skep:
I'll take my docs word over yours any day btw.
Research has shown those shape up shoes are crap. Last time I checked, evolution had already made our bodies the best they could be and wearing shitty shoes changes everything from the way your feet are shaped to the way your body has to balance to stay upright. But go ahead, knock something you know jack shit about.

This is the same bullshit that is spouted in every article I have read. Good for you, you can copy and paste.
Asphalt and concrete are not natural, either. Evolution didn't take that into account.
I know a lot of shit about this because I have been reading the articles and reading the research on medical pages. All I can find is people disagree on the actual claims that are made about barefoot running. What it really boils down to is what kind of striker your are, if you are a heel striker, barefoot running may progress you into a mid or fore foot striker, which may beneficial to your body type. It's all a lot of guess work both ways. Nothing I have found gives concrete evidence that barefoot running is right for everyone or anyone over normal running.

So perhaps you should try it before saying it's hype and arguing against something you have no actual experience with. Then you'd have a better basis for thinking it's crap if it doesnt work for you.
I didnt copy and paste anything, I report only what I actually have found to be true.
Not a single one of us is saying "you MUST do this, its the ONLY thing that works". We are simply happy to report our good results because we are USING them and KNOW from FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE that we have had good results. Not spouting what we read online or in debates about it.

Actually I do have experience being barefoot. We all have first hand experience of being barefoot, since we are all human you know. That's the whole point of these, to get a barefoot experience with modest protection against potential hazardous objects.
There are plenty of people giving first hand experience of shattering their feet barefoot and also long distance runners only using these for short jogs and use their shoes for long distance.
Good, you like them. I do not wish to try them based on the research I have done. I have weighed the risk vs pros/cons and came up with a differing opinion on the matter.
We should really just get these, that way we get a super awesome low impact workout. NASA recommended.

I don't use shoes for deadlifts, I take em off. They have a deadlift pad comprised of extra gym floor rubber.
However squats still get shoes because the squat rack is located over actual concrete and the heel padding on my feet feels like it's going to split if I go over 315.

There is a correct technique to running, but getting fucked up knees and hips is more a function of age where the cartlidge gets worn out. Also, body weight has alot to do with it. At 210lbs, I'm not going to be running all that often if I can avoid it

There is a correct technique to running, but getting fucked up knees and hips is more a function of age where the cartlidge gets worn out. Also, body weight has alot to do with it. At 210lbs, I'm not going to be running all that often if I can avoid it
How tall are you?

210 isn't all that big... I'm 190 (trying to get to 180)
and yes cartlidge wears out, however if you're running properly I have a hard time believing that your knees will go for that reason alone.
I'm sure your weight lifting is harder on your knees and hips than running is anyways

ugh felt like shit today, haven't run the last two days and I can really tell the difference how I feel.
They sell the gimmick shoe in a major brand now. Don't remember the brand, it was one of the A ones. Adidas/Asics or something. It was like $50 and was like the water shoe version with the band on top.
Went to the shoe store to get fitted for some regular running shoes since mine are toast and not for running anyway.
Going to ortho doc in a couple weeks. As I am starting to run a little more, my left knee is starting to give me trouble. It's the knee I injured riding the DRZ in the snow in January. Something is not quite right with it. Maybe I will ask him about the shoes.

Fila sells them and Addidas I believe... I saw the Fila ones at the BX yesterday... THOSE look cheep and gimicky... compared to the Vibrams
anyways... taking the weekend off... 19 miles this week. Did 7 miles on Thursday with my vest, damn did that kick my ass... but it's nice to know that I'm back to 100% as far as endurance, dunno about speed though.
I've registered for the Tampa Tough Mudder... so I'm gonna start training for that, running on the beach (hope'n to reach 3 miles on it) next week

hey they're not for everyone... I like mine... I could give a fuck what others wear... but the Fila ones I saw looked like they needed to be sold at payless shoe source or Kmart... that cheep and gimmicky.
the Vibrams... IMO actually look quality and have thought as to wear they're supportive, and where they bend... not just watershoes with toes... again.. just IMO...
maybe you should try a pair... ease into it though... they seemed awkward for the first couple weeks I had mine.... now, honestly... I prefer the feeling YMMV

I have seen them, they looked the same as the $50 pair. The $50 pair actually looked more robust in the way they designed their strap.
I already got shoes, went with regulars for tarmac and got a pair of trail running shoes that have mesh to release water around the bottom of the shoe and have a good mud/wet dirt tread. Cost for both was on par for vibrams.

I'm not talking about the strap... it's the soul that makes the difference... but what ever...
I'm gonna get a set of KSO's for the Warrior run and Tough Mudder though.
what shoes did you get?
FWIW... I did have a little bit of knee issues prior to the stroke when running long distances... haven't had any since, I've only ran with the VFF's so I don't know if it's the shoes or the month down time that solved the issue.

The sole is just to be minimalist. If thats all you are talking about, there are other minimalist shoes that have just as good or better soles for "barefoot" running without toes, but I suppose we will hear some awesome reason why you need the toes too. There is always justification why you absolutely need certain brands.
My knee is fucked from a recent injury. I highly doubt shoes will make a difference. Like I said, I am going to ask the orthopedic surgeon and see what he says. He is a bone and joint specialist after all.
Just got a pair of New Balances for street, got some Adidas trail shoe ones that I tried on that I got for a smokin deal online. Adizero or some shit.

no... I don't really care what brand... though I tend to stay away from Nike as I tear them up.
yes I know there are tons of minimalist shoes out there... my point was to compare the Fila cheep ones I saw vs the VFF's...
I could care less that they're toe shoes vs normal ones... the reason I bought the VFF's is because they wanted me to walk on the beach barefoot... not on this beach! so I got these to help protect my foot while still giving me as close to barefoot as I could.
I do know that my calves get a hell of a lot harder work out in these than any other running shoe I've had, and I've had quite a few. Yes that might be the minimalist style that's doing that but hey... I've found something I like and works for me. But I guess since you don't like it... it must just be me drink'n the coolaide

Yep. I have Nike Free 5.0 which are a minimalist shoe and love it. Most all of my racing shoes are a minimalist shoe of some sort. But some of the people I race with just have regular shoes and it works for them. Whatever floats their boat.
I have tried the VFFs on, but never purchased a pair. I can't bring myself to spend the money when I have the Free.

Could be the koolaid. Sugar can cure diseases. If the mind is happy, the body will be better. Believing something is true helps.
Also could be your feet fit the shoes and are comfortable. That's a biggie for shoes.

My wife picked these over the Bikilas but still thinks they are ugly. She said I can't wear them around her. I said they will give me better traction in bed. Not sure if she is sold on them yet but we will see.

I tried running last year but "SQUIRREL!!!"
I go to the gym 3 times a week and I walk all over the place but running and my bow legged ass never went well. I get self-conscience. I have a funny gate. People automatically move to the other side of the street when I approach. I just never really did the running thing. At most I'd run for 15 minutes at the gym as a way to loosen up or warm up.
A few months ago I ran around the neighborhood (1.5 miles) patted myself on the back (for running the whole way) and left it at that.
Over the weekend told the wife I was going for run (because I wanted to change the subject from "Me cleaning the kitchen")
Pulled a Forest Gump and started running.
Insta 5K in my hilly neighborhood. Had I started earlier in the day I may have kept on going but the Sun is made of nuclear crap and that shit is hotter than a mofo.
Going to try the runtastic app next run.
I'm almost to the point again where I can do a solid 3 miles everyday without feeling like death tomorrow
trip, did you ever start trying to excersize again
trip, did you ever start trying to excersize again
I got in good shape for the warrior dash and was running about 3-5 miles a day right before I got sick and bailed on it. I kept going until I moved to Chatty. I fell off the wagon while I was living in the apartment cause I don't like treadmill running and didn't have a good place to run. I really need to start again.
I eat a lot better now, but gained the weight back from not exercising.

Moobs?
Pushups go
I was doing those too, I pretty much did pushups, crunches, and ran. Need to get back into the the routine. Should be getting a dog soon, so hopefully that at least makes me walk everyday.
Not real interested in being athletic anymore, just healthy.

Not really running, but that's pretty much where I am right now.
I walk twice a day with the dog, try to make her jog with me a little (with varying success).
I'm trying to keep myself in a routine of pushups and situps/crunches every day.
And, of course, one or two mountain bike rides a week as time & motivation allows.
As I drop weight running seems a little more possible, but I'm still not sure I really *want* to.

If you cant run biking is pretty decent. Try to focus more on duration and physical exertion more than distance. The longer you can go with a higher heart rate the better. You will be able to run easier once you are able to build up your cardiac endurance.
Also instead of just focusing on pushup and sit ups where you are only working one side of your body worth of muscles, you need to pull weight with your arms to exercise your biceps and back, and do dead lifts to strengthen your core (lower back). Squats with or without weights (where your ass almost touches your heels) will also work out most of the useable muscles in your legs.
Doing pushups and sit ups only work out your triceps, stomach and part of your shoulders. Your chest, back, bicepts and forearms are completely left out.
A good and easy 'pull' exercise is to tie a rope around a tree limb (preferably with a ring, loop or some kind of handhold on the end) and lean back pulling your weight up with your upper body. The closer to level your body is the more physical exertion you will need. The great part about this is you adjust the level of intensity with your own body weight and how much you lean back. .

Thanks for the pointers. I may give those pulls a try.
Mainly I'm doing the situps to get my flabby-ass gut tightened up and pushups because... I'll be honest... I have fuck-all for upper body strength and muscle tone right now. Anything is going to be an improvement.
I've been doing incline pushups as well as regular so I'm seeing a little improvement in my chest. I'm also doing reps with dumbells, just didn't bother mentioning it.

I bought the new balance "barefoot" shoe on sale and ran 4.5 miles in them last week. I like them just as much as the vibrams and i acutally think its more comfortable because it doesn't feel as snug and doesn't have anything forcing my toes apart. I do think the vibrams were very helpful as far as training and using a midfoot strike but other than running in them i wont wear them out on the town. Love my new balances.

LOL. Do your thing. I said two years ago or so when I first heard about them that I would never wear them. I said I would put my junk in a blender before wearing them. Two years later it turns out that I value my junk more then what people think about my footwear. Imagine that.
I ran fine with regular shoes as well. I don't like running now, unlike when I was younger, because I find its hard on the body. But thats not why I bought them.
My feet have been sore for close to a year. I think its the fact that I wear work boots for 50+ hours a week. I find its making my feet weak. Thats my opinion. So after reading about these shoes for about 2 years I said screw it I'm going to try them. So far I love them. Ran in them once but thats not why I bought them. I have used them in the gym twice and I love the feeling. If nothing else I love wearing them so I will keep them. If they do strengthen my feet then I will be happy.
The mild pain from my Saturday run died down the other day and my feet feel better then they did before the shoes. Its too early to say if its the shoes or what but I'm happy.
Plus I like having shoes that not everyone likes, just like my silver Nike Basketball sneakers I had years ago.
James

I don't know what kind of work boots you wear, but mine are like walking on concrete and toughen up the bottom of my feet. They definitely don't weaken my feet.

I'm talking about a the boots not letting my foot down much. It's just how I feel. If I'm right these might improve that. If I'm wrong then I will have to try something else but the ugly shoes stay unless they make it worse.

I've been doing a run/walk program for a little while now. I'm only running at about an 8 minute/mile pace in the running portions, though. Doing about 2.6 miles over a 30 minute period. Today's program was walk 5 minutes, run 10, walk 5, run 5, walk 5. I haven't been doing this consistently and some weeks I take more days off between runs than others. But I suppose it's better than sitting on my ass all the time.

Friday I went to the gym and did an arm workout, plus I did a leg workout. Then lost my mind and went to Citadel Hill and did some hill sprints and a short run along the base of the hill. It was great that they cut the grass just that day and I have allergies. So doing the three sprints up the hill, after a leg workout and with the fresh cut grass, I was proud of my effort.
