View Full Version : Average intelligence on message boards.

I've been doing the motorcycle message board thing for about ten years now. And in that time I've been pretty lucky. Most of the forums I use have fairly intelligent to absolutely brilliant people with the occasional idiot thrown in the mix who either becomes a troll or disappears.

I didn't realize how lucky I had been until I bought my dirt bike and started browsing/posting on dirt forums.

Good lord! The average intelligence is in the negatives.

I wish I could narrow it down to one or two things to show you, but it's so bad it hurts my head to read most of the threads.

You should see the 2 stroke vs 4 stroke debates. They make you want to claw our your eyes and smash your fingers with a hammer so you can't access a computer ever again.

In closing, thank you for not being a bunch of idiots. Their average user makes our dumbest user look like a nuclear physicist...

The quality of discussion can definitely vary based on subject matter. I've recently had a renewed interest in radio controlled vehicles and there is a lot of what you describe on those as well. If I had to guess I'd say the primary factor is the average age of users. Both dirt bikes and R/C typically attract kids while street bikes will have riders who are a bit older. This site in particular seems to attract riders who may be even a little older than the average. Kids are morons and it tends to come through in their writing.

Where have you been exploring?

I too am looking for a dirt based forum that has less knowitalls and and trolls, and more info.

ADV rider has got a wealth of information, but man-alive are the members crusty bitter old bastards! If you don't have 35,829 posts...you're really nothing to them!

I use thumpertalk a lot. I'm at the point now where my argument in the 2 vs 4 debates is that 2 strokes have too many power strokes and should get rid of one if they want equal displacement for racing. :lol

ADV rider is still like that, always heard it was prety snobby over there.

You can always go to gixxer.com if you want to lower your IQ by a few points

Gixxer.com is populated by rocket scientists compared to some of the dirt forums.

We have thread titles such as, "Help with seat removel". Manufacturers should really make it more obvious. The only two bolts attached to the seat should come with instructions.

WOW now that is bad. I never saw any epic threads from those forums like the guy who put energy drink in his tank or the guy who drilled his ECU

I've got the DRZ torn down in the garage now rejetting it. Shop manual, and pages from 4strokes.com printed and strown everywhere :tremble:

Good info, but their forum is crap.

I joined TT when I first got the dual sport but never really posted or look through the forum.

Their shop is here in Vegas, and the couple of times I bought tires and a battery from them, they have been pretty good to me. But yeah in general the people I see with dirtbikes here are pretty red necky...

He who feels the need to ask...

 I've given up on forums. This place is good enough for me, and we all know each other well enough we can ask or discuss non bike related stuff all the time without fear of real hateful reprisal. There will always be reprisal, but here it's in good fun.

Don't be fooled...people on this forum research stuff to the hilt before making a thread so they can look more intelligent on the subject. lol

Not knowing how to take a seat off is all relative to what you think it idiotic. This one guy on another site I frequent was spewing that you could control the ignition switch, fuel pump, starter and injectors all through the OBD2 connector with the key OFF. He was going on how to devise a plan to steal a car, which I promptly owned his ass. I thought he was an idiot.

These kids are just young and will ask dumb questions until they learn more.

I was talking about the people on the forums.

I have to say I've always been surprised at the level of intelligent conversation on this board versus many others.

Figured it couldn't be anything too good, the wonderful people of Tennessee aren't running around glowing or anything.

Good luck with the dam job so you can be one of those dam people who work on the dam dam.

Alice in Chains - Dam That River

I broke you in the canyon
I drowned you in the lake
You, a snake that I would trample
Only thing i'd not embrace

Oh, you couldn't dam that river
And maybe I don't give a damn anyway
So you couldn't dam that river
And it washed me so far away

I pushed and then you stumbled
I kicked you in the face
You stare at me so hollow
Got to keep that killin' pace

Oh, you couldn't dam that river
And maybe I don't give a damn anyway
So you couldn't dam that river
And it washed me so far away

I burned the place around you
I hit you with a rake
You piss upon my candle
So proving you're a fake

Oh, you couldn't dam thar river
And maybe i don't give a damn anyway
So you couldn't dam that river
And it washed me so far away

I will say, we're a bunch of assholes... but, we're intelligent assholes.

I've been impressed with www.miata.net for their wealth of information and ability to help those that are part of that community. But, other than them, most forums are very inclusive. The pattern of searching for a solution, not being able to find it, posting about it then getting SLAMMED for not searching is rather prevalent on most sites. That is especially prevalent on sites that have a terrible search function.

I can't even read posts like the one copied a few pages ago. I get to the first butchered word and my brain stops. *twitch*

[sings] Jealousy...

Maybe some...but I think a lot of them were absolutely convinced that I was a con-artist who had planned to do it the way it turned out all along. The amount of hate mail was staggering.

Fuck man, I got some hate mail around a month or so ago when my thread on ADV was resurrected and Whip came to my defense. By the time I got to it I saw that they decided to go ahead and lock it down. Which was sad, but a relief at the same time.

Still, wrap your head around that....getting hate mail 4 years after the fact...

I don't really post much on ThumperTalk. I do a lot of reading over on ADVRider and you're right, quite a few of them come off as snobbish, but it's more of the atmosphere over there than anything else. I have met several members in person, and they're all really good guys.

I also post on Cafe Husky, but that's pretty special-interest.
