This doesn't have much to do with phones, but I have heard "rumors" that the new 4G laptop cards & hotspot devices often disconnect whenever poor signal forces them to transition from 4G to 3G. Is that true? If so, which company is that worse with?

The amount of badgers and smilies saying I suck are less on 4g compared to internet on teh web.

I just won an auction for a 4g phone, so I will let you know in a week or so how it is.

I had a verizon with 4g...occasional lost calls and the internet didn't seem to work in any buildings. I heard that they were making a software update so it would switch between 3g and 4g.

When the internet worked it was faster.

I think it's been dependent on the hardware and the type of 4g cards you're looking in to. Some of the 1st gen LTE stuff have had some issues with the handoff, but I'm not sure if the newest stuff has solved the issues, or if there have been releases of software patches. I know one or two people at work who are using the Sprint WiMax stuff and don't seem to have problems. I have no personal experience with either though. The best bet may be to figure out if you're going with LTE or WiMax, then see what the latest and greatest laptop cards are out and hit up reviews and forums to see how they're holding up in real world use and if there are problems that may be specific to location, as well as hardware/software.

Just got a 4G modem with Verizon, and so far the speed rocks. I average about 7 mbps download, but occasionally I get as high as 14-15 if I'm in the middle of the city. PCWorld did a test proving that Verizon has the fastest modems/cards by far. As far as phones go, they didn't get to test the new Thunderbolt because it wasn't out yet, but I see no reason why that wouldn't be the fastest phone. They said Sprint's network was really spotty and that their EVO's and Sprint cards could only get 4G about half the time, no matter which city they tried them in.

this. I have a 4G modem for my laptop and it spends most of it's time on a lower network setting because it can't find a 4G connection.

Shitty.

Does it even transition from 4G to 3G, or does it disconnect before doing so?

It kicks me off first. It's not a smooth transition by any stretch.

It lets the signal get so weak before it switches over that I can't hold my VPN connection.

Wack. Dump it and get on Verizon. I got a 20% corporate discount, so I only pay $40/mo for 5GB.

PCWorld says based on their tests, they believe most of the carriers are allowing their 3G speeds to decline versus last year, so they can focus on building up 4G. So if someone has a 3G-only phone, they're getting fucked. PCWorld said average speeds are down 7-8% versus year ago.

I dont use it very often. Only if my wifi is tied up with some upload/download gimmicks. But it's faster than 3G for sure. But a waste of $$, IMO.

What are they charging for 4G along with your voice plan and does that include the WiFi hotspot feature?

no extra charge for 4g. wifi hotspot is free for the first three months, but you can root the phone to have it supposedly

Verizon pseudo-"unlimited" data plan is $29. Voice is $39 for 450 min, but text is extra.

Tmobile 4g is wiked fast when on 4g, and near any pop center I get 4g service. I haven't seen myself kicked off when switching from 4g to 3g or the other way around. The only thing I do notice is a5 second pause then it picks right back up. on my last phone with 3g it would take at least as long as the video to download a youtube video. With 4g it takes seconds for each minute of video. I also have video chat which on 3g is pixelated and a bit behind the audio, on 4g it is in tune with the audio and gives a crappy cell picture that would have ben considered great 3 years ago.

I have stopped taking my laptop when I travel for work. Plus the phone acts as a wifi hotspot for no extra charge. I changed the wifi name to your moms porno after I Had someone randomly try to connect.

Once in a while the technology makes a huge jump, for me the 2 recent jumps were the upgrade to a smart phone 3 years ago and now the upgrade to 4g. One of those can't go back now thing.

All Verizon 4G devices (Thunderbolts, aircards, etc.) have stopped working as of last night. They can't even connect to 3G. I just called them and there's no known resolution date.

What is your total bill? I have a HTC Inspire "4G" with Att and when I use the wifi hotspot it is faster than my broadband service. How much faster will the LTE4G service be?

LTE can be as faster than broadband when they finally crank it up. It's only around 10-15mbps right now.

What up, Ted?

With my 20% discount it's about $47

But that's for an aircard.....not a phone. For a phone it'd definitely be higher.

As far as AT&T goes, I can guarantee an LTE phone is going to be faster. Assuming Verizon has good coverage in your area of course.

Verizon's 3G is back on. 4G isn't back up yet.

Verizon's 3G is still faster than anyone else's 3G.

As for 4G, Verizon > T-Mobile > Sprint

Don't know about AT&T, but you can read the test report in this month's PCWorld on the shelves.

Hasn't there been multiple independent studies showing ATT 3G is faster than Verizon??

You might be right about 3G

http://www.pcworld.com/article/189592/atandt_roars_back_in_pcworlds_second_3g_wireless_p erformance_test.html

But for 4G, Verizon is on top as far as modems/hotspots go. For phones, T-Mobile is the fastest, but only because Verizon's 4G phones hadn't come out by the time they wrote this test.

Not according to PCWorld. There isn't any network whose average is in the double digits. Saying 21mps is like a stereo company saying that their stereo has 500 peak watts..........sustainable for one micro-second
