View Full Version : Why are RC-51's so expensive?

Here is a 2002 w/ 13.5k miles on it for $6200..
Do people actually pay these crazy prices?
http://longisland.craigslist.org/mcy/2302590553.html
Almost. That one seems a little high, but yes they seem overpriced because they are limited in numbers

Performance chrome exhaust ?! WTF is that. LOL.
The sad thing is that in stock form, the RC51 is really anemic. I was disappointed when I rode a bone stock one. The handling is great, the brakes are great. The motor is so restricted it sucks.
Call it Honda fanboi-ism maybe? I dunno, but I've noticed the same thing.

Must be a Honda fanboi thing.. so does that mean I can get 20k for my S2000 because it's a Honda.. Don't worry about the fact that it has 60k miles.. It's a honda!

Because the owners friggin LOVE them and can ASK that much
http://www.troybaker.com/tlr/pits3.jpg
They're not all that fast, they don't handle as well as most 04-newer sportbikes, but they've got a great deal of character. And close to stock ones are getting a lot harder to find.

They are cool bikes. I wanted one for years. But I sure as shit wouldn't pay those prices for one....especially for high miles like many of them have.

I found one several months ago on Craigslist... full exhaust, trick wheels, suspension goodies, low miles (for being 10 years old)... $3800.
Unfortunately it was an old ad that the guy never deleted... he said he sold it the day he posted it...
They have a cult following, people either love em or hate em. It's not really a fan boy thing either, because Drewpy isn't a Honda fan boy by any stretch of the imagination and he loves them. They are no longer produced, had low production numbers, and it's getting hard to find decent condition ones. They are just going to go up in price now.

I've seen the same thing with Suzuki TL-Rs. People want a lot of money for 10+ year old bikes with higher mileage and in less than perfect condition. There aren't a whole lot of options for V-twins though especially since most people seem to avoid Buells and older Ducati superbikes are just as expensive and much more maintenance intensive.
I personally like the RC and especially the TL. My brother had a TL years ago with Blue Flame slip ons that had an amazing sound. I've never heard any I-4 that sounded anywhere close to as good.

I have a TLR, and I've seen it too, which is odd. TLRs have even more of a cult following, but in general, are way less popular than the RC.
It's a fantastic bike though! I love mine. I got mine for one of those *if I told you I'd have to kill you* prices, much like I did the rest of my bikes. It was 6 months old when I got it, and with all the goodies I have on it now, I still have less in it than what a new one cost back in the day. It has 30,000 miles on it now.
I get messages on Youtube from people that see my videos about it asking if I'll tell the stuff I have on it. I have a Penske triple adjustable rear shock, Marchesini magnesium wheels, and Yoshimura full titanium exhaust to start. You can't buy this stuff anymore, so it's really rare to even see. One guy from Czechoslovakia ups his offer for my exhaust every couple of months. We're up to $1500 now. LOL

RC51s have a very dedicated following, which is why the bikes keep selling for the prices they are. Honda only made the RC51 for 7 years, from 2000-2006, and produced two basic generations of the model that are only slightly different. Between squids and posers, these machines are getting even more rare.
And if you thought buying a decent road worthy example was expensive, try restoring one. Some parts are almost impossible to find outside of the dealership. I've got one that I've been slowly working at restoring (read when I'm not deployed), and one that I'll be doing a ground up build when I get all the parts. Definitely an expensive project.

Perfect reason to get an older Aprilia Mille or Falco. Relatively unknown, bombproof motor, and reasonably priced.

Definitely a cool bike, especially the black 05-06 model. Couldn't be my only bike though. Too heavy & too hot in the summer. Fuel economy isn't all that impressive either. Think I'll just keep what I got and add a Triumph ST for long-distance.

That's what use to KILL me about the TL's
You could spend $1k on a penske, another $500 on forks, and sort out the fuel, slap a $1000 worth of exhaust on it, and it'd be worth about $500 more than a bone stock one :td:
You put Sato rearsets on an Arsey and the value goes up $2k :skep:
That's why you HAVE to find a TL with the suspension and exhaust....otherwise it's gonna cost you an arm and a leg and it's not gonna be worth ANY of those mods unless you keep it for life.

I think part of it is the RC was set up well out of the box. We all know the rotary damper is only good as a paperweight. I opted for a bitubo shock and it worked well for me, and only have the yoshi rs-3 cans on there withthe stock pipes. The motor has weisco pistons now and a thinner headgasket, thats about it for my performance mods on the bike. Then again I iwll never sell it since that requires me putting it back together LOL

The TLR always had kind of a frat boy/punk image compared to the "elite" RC.......That probably explains the difference in pricing.
The RC had mostly a White & Asian owner base.......techies mostly.......and their cars tended to be stuff like Integra Type R's and Mazda RX-7's.......and they listen to house & techno
The TLR was purchased by Whites & Blacks mostly...... who owned Z28's or Mustang GT convertibles......who listen to eminem or kid rock
Doesn't mean one bike was actually better than the other.......it's just the image Suzuki tends to have in general, compared to Honda. Witness all the people who diss GSXR's like as if they know anything about them

Which part of no needs further explanation. took those idiots 4 months to get that regulator issue taken care of. I will almost be happy once the warantee expires so I can do the work myself and hopefully find aftermarket stuff. its a damn rotax engine so there should be stuff out there. Or EBR could do the right thing and carry the parts himself.

Doesn't EBR carry a lot of stuff? I'm not sure, I haven't looked lately. I'd do the work myself even if it is under warranty. Only thing the dealer ever did to mine was the headlight recall...they wouldn't give me the assembly and let me do it on my own...and the TPS reset.

Not sure on stuff like voltage regulators and the electronics. Seems like guys on the buelletinboard can find/score things at least.
The upside withthe TL's were/are a lot of the gsxr parts are the same so availability isnt an issue yet. Bodywork may be tougher but I think you can still score racing plastics and stuff.

when i had it I couldnt wait to go riding again, the bike was like an obsession i put on more miles faster on that bike then most people put on their dd cars, once I got the 1125 i all but stopped riding :(, hell i put mon more miles on the RC in a day, a single 24 hour day then I did all of last year!

If so, I envy you.
I was getting baked on my 2004 Aprilia, and that bike didn't get as many complaints as the RC did about heat.

Exactly this... 10kyr in a 3 month summer, every summer. Sold the bike to get a cbr1000rr, put like 5000 km on it in two seasons. Got the harley new in 08, there still isnt 10k on it.
I thought I would love these other bikes, and I was wrong. I will have another RC51 next year if I can afford it.

Oh, its true. And it does get hot as fuck if youy happen to be in a city in stop and go.
That said, I never use a bike for commuting anyway. I have a truck for that.

If he gets anywhere near that, you can say this is def an exception where you get close to what you put into it in mods. At the same time.. 15k for an 04? that's just insane.

I love the RC51. I'd love to own one. I rode a friend's bike and loved it. Are they gold? Fuck no! Power felt the same as a SV1000 except with a seating position used in midieval dungens. I just like how they look and hte whole vibe to them. But not worth the price people think they are.
It's been a couple years since I checked but there is a Honda dealershiop that still has a brand new RC51 on the floor and 3 in crates. I hope those fuckers hold on to them until they rust.

It doesn't have fancy brand name rearsets, shocks, levers, reservoir caps, sliders, axle spacers, etc.......That's why it isn't worth $15K
People want a ton of multi-colored anodized parts everywhere........otherwise they wouldn't look cool at Starbucks

RC's ar nice to looks at but they are big heavy pigs. The best thing about them is that with a set of Sato exhaust, it would make you shoot one in your pants, but thats about it. My 08 GSXR 750 was quicker than my buddy's 01 RC51.

well there is 7yrs of technology advancement
and who really cares "how much" faster, at these levels the rider is more important then the bike.

Seriously? What kind of problems?
The Rotax engine is bulletproof
But it's silly little quality control things...
Leaking clutch slaves.........Faulty spot welds on the oil tank.........Swingarm that had a recall due to faulty welds...........Electrical connector that burns up..........brakes that need bleeding every 500-1000 miles..........shock that wears out too soon due to being so close to the exhaust header..........Anti-theft system that decides to prevent you from starting the bike.............Odometer that sometimes resets to 0 if you disconnect the battery...........These are all common faults on the early models......Try to get an 06+
But, the fit & finish is outstanding, the paint & bodywork is thick and high quality, the all-plastic tank is a great idea, the gauge panel is awesome, the motor sounds great, it tracks like its on rails.............That is the Italian way.....Appearance first, followed by sound and performance........nothing else is important to them
