Awesome. Finally, a reasonable speed limit.

When I was a kid, the speed limit was 75, and cars at the time had:

Bias ply tires
Drum brakes
No seatbelts (not until '64)
No padded dash
No side impact door beams
No ABS
No roll-over protection
No computer designed crumple zones
No energy absorbing bumpers
No airbags


Now, cars have:

High speed rated radial tires
Dual circuit power assisted disk brakes
Pre-tensioning seatbelts (with shoulder harnesses)
Padded dashboards
Side impact door beams
Computer controlled ABS
Integral roll-over protection
Computer designed crumple zones
Energy absorbing bumpers
More fucking airbags than I can count on both hands

Not from what I've seen. Drivers of a semi have a less chance of surviving than someone in a car. Semi cabs are being made more and more cheap every day. Plastic is taking over the majority of them. Even the bumpers are plastic on a lot of them now.

I'd rather see a honda civic doing flips than an 18 wheeler mowing down a how line of vehicles.

I don't, the Semi's that come through here drive like fucking idiots just as much as the normal person. They only problem with that, is they have a vehicle that demolishes others.

Semi's hastily pulling in front of me when they have little to no room, so they can get in the passing lane and hold up traffic is a daily occurence.

I have worked along side a lot of individuals who have their commercial license, no way in hell I would trust them over anyone else. Too many of them have this "I rule the road" complex.

Of course, the only major automobile incident I have been in was when a Semi plowed into me in freakin bumper to bumper traffic.

I think 85 is too fast for all lanes on the freeway. What they really need to do is mark each lane with a speed range such as:
Lane 1: 85-75mph
Lane 2: 75-65mph
Lane 3: 65 and below

When we travel for trackdays we know were getting closer to home because the driving gets worse.

I don't flash to pass. Picked up something many years back while in Germany.

In fact, I was told by someone that you can get a fine in Germany for highbeaming, and that the correct protocol was, in fact, the left turn signal. He also duly noted that if you were traveling in excess of 260 km, that it probably was perhaps best to give a light tap on the highs regardless, just to let them know you're coming.

I started using the left turn signal thing, and I've actually even seen it catching on a bit.

Regardless, more training /= more ability. It's supposed to, but people are teh suck and more training is no guarantee of anything. The semi drivers I generally "share" the road with are living proof of that.

As an over the road driver of 6 years, I will say those that travel cross country are much better drivers than those that only drive locally.

But really, how many trucks do you see wandering across three lanes while texting? I trust semis much more than cagers anyday, and most trucks top out at maybe 75 nowdays.
