Man robs Walgreen's armed with ax, bat, police say
ST. PETERSBURG - A 41-year-old St. Petersburg man was arrested Tuesday night, moments after authorities say he stole an 18-pack of Natural Ice from a Walgreen's while armed with an ax and baseball bat.
Arthur Allen Dixon was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and resisting arrest with violence.
"I just stole a case of beer, you guys," Dixon reportedly said after two officers took him into custody, according to St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz. "You should at least let me have a drink."
At 11 p.m., Dixon walked into a Walgreen's at 900 49th St. carrying a baseball bat and an ax in his right hand, Puetz said. When a clerk saw him walk to the back of the store, she called 911 even before he took the beer, Puetz said.
On his way out, Dixon looked at the clerk, looked at the ax and baseball bat in his right hand, and said, "I'll see you tomorrow," Puetz said.
When a police sergeant spotted him, Dixon refused to get on the ground and then started to run, prompting the sergeant to chase and tackle him, Puetz said. During the ensuing struggle, the sergeant was pushed into the road and injured his knees, Puetz said.
Another officer arrived and Dixon was arrested.
