Both of these.

Also, it pisses me off that our supposed "lawmakers" are spending time on crap like this (Texas Senator working to present and pass a Bill to get the shuttle in Houston). Why the fuck does a Bill have to be presented for stupid shit like this? Do they not have enough fucking work to do?

Oh wait, they can't address the "real" problems - that may piss off the voters. Can't have that. They're so busy KEEPING their jobs that they can't DO their fucking jobs.

They based the decision on population centers and expected number of visitors each year. The smithsonian and the cape got one each just because, and LA and NY are obvious choices because the large populations centers near them. Yes its gonna piss off texas, but people don't vacation in Houston if they dont have to.

Yeah, enterprise flew in atmosphere. Nothing mock about it. Fun fact: in the late eighties when my old man found out it was at dulles he packed us all in the car and drove down to try and see it. Found the airport manager's office and played on his status as an army officer to get us a private viewing of the thing. It was parked off in some forgotten corner of the airport next to a few other decaying hulks and wouldn't you know it? My toddling ass ran up and kicked it.

There is no #2. There is Cape Canaveral and there is everything else. As a space junkie as a kid, Houston wasn't important to me. Sure that's where the training facility was and all that crap. (They have Space Camps all over the place, btw) But, I wanted to see where people GO TO SPACE. That's the Cape. You don't see what you can see at the Space Coast anywhere else.

It was still pretty impressive when I saw it at the Smithsonian.

Discovery should go to the Smithsonian as planned to replace Enterprise. Atlantis should go to the Cape as planned. Endeavour should go to Houston. They can send Enterprise to whatever stupid place they pull out of their ass. As long as they are sending Endeavour to New York they should send the Canadarm they are removing from it to Mexico.

The engineers back then in NASA were the best in the industry. The government wasn't afraid to throw real cash at a problem and get an actual working solution back then.

Now our plan is throw a little cash at a problem, get a shitty non working partial solution and have the contractor ask for more money to finish that solution. The government gives this money, the contractor rides this cash as long as they can and then bolts for the door and then the government has to fork out a huge amount of money to another contractor who will end up finally giving the government a working solution, although a crappy one.

Houston already has rockets and other space program attractions, and those had to be massively restored a few years back due to environmental damage.
Houston gets hurricanes, floods, and other disasters that make it an unsuitable place to store a piece of history.

That is what they have been trained to do. The government tendency (regardless of party) to demand a bunch of something as soon as possible only to pay late as hell and ultimately cancel the program has put a number of companies out of business or make them ripe takeover/acquisition targets. There is a reason Boeing owns a huge portion of the American aerospace industry.

Correct answer.

Lift vehicles should be replaced, orbiters should continue to be used.

Original Space Shuttle plans were for a space plane lift vehicle, instead of the oxygen/aluminum "bomb" trio they ended up strapping it to for launch (keeping a straight face when the first one blew up must have been hard).

Put the damn thing on a reusable lift vehicle, as it should have been deployed in the first place, and it will continue to be a lower cost sustainable workhorse for years to come.

They didn't go with the space plane lift vehicle due to complexity and cost. Even if they had gone that direction it still would have ended up being a rocket fuel "bomb" strapped to the shuttle, only one designed to go primarily horizontal rather than vertical. It would have used jet engines to get it to the right altitude and speed to fire its rockets, then used the rockets to get to the right altitude and speed to jettison the shuttle. There would be nothing "lower cost" about designing and building some today.

I politely disagree.

Replacing the lift vehicle means undertaking a project to make an advanced lift aircraft, not replace an entire spacecraft program (read: mo' money).

What do you mean? We aren't replacing the entire space program. We will be using commercial launch services and Russian rockets, both of which already exist, to replace the shuttle which is essentially an SUV to low earth orbit.

What you are talking about is not only replacing that with a non-existent vehicle, but a vehicle that practically every space program has examined and subsequently discarded as too complex and expensive. I "can talk some fucking shit, boy" because I am backed up by every substantial space program on the planet.

Avatard

I don't think a lift plane is impossible. I think the government has to look to the private companies, and take bids on designs, though, and not try and do it "in house" with NASA.

That FO SHO ain't gonna fly [pun intended].

goof2
04-20-2011, 05:45 PM
Nobody has said it is impossible, just more complex and expensive when compared to other options.

anthonyk
04-20-2011, 06:59 PM
I never really understood the whole lift plane idea. You're gonna build a reusable vehicle with a sizeable payload capacity so it can ferry another reusable vehicle with a (relatively) crappy payload capacity most of the way up to orbit. (Actually, since the shuttle orbiter doesn't have tanks for its main engines, you'd have to get it all the way up to orbit, I'm guessing.)

Take the glider prop off the back, and fly that lift plane all the way up to orbit with something useful on its back.

Avatard
04-20-2011, 07:16 PM
Actually, a proper lift plane could take an orbiter most of the way up, and smaller external Ox tanks could make the boost into orbit without having to use any aluminum "Roman Candles". Remember, the orbiter has engines.

Trip
04-20-2011, 07:34 PM
Orbiters are a waste of time, we need to get back to long distance space flight. NASA actually did right by bailing on the shuttles and focusing on returning to the moon and maybe eventually mars. Let the private sector figure out the low orbit shit.

Yeah, but then again, put engines and tanks on the lift plane and you can increase payload capacity by taking the separate orbiter out of the picture completely.

Orbiters are a waste of time, we need to get back to long distance space flight. NASA actually did right by bailing on the shuttles and focusing on returning to the moon and maybe eventually mars. Let the private sector figure out the low orbit shit.

Let the private sector figure out how to ferry people around, but if you're gonna go any significant distance from earth, it makes sense to build your ship in orbit. Something reusable that can ferry big payloads up and down might be pretty useful.

goof2

Actually, a proper lift plane could take an orbiter most of the way up, and smaller external Ox tanks could make the boost into orbit without having to use any aluminum "Roman Candles". Remember, the orbiter has engines.

Regardless of how it is accomplished the Shuttle still has to get up to around 20,000mph to get to low earth orbit. There is currently only one option for achieving those kinds of speeds, "Roman Candles". Maybe someday we will develop a rail gun or space elevator which will negate that problem, but at that point the Shuttles will be long gone. Currently rockets are needed for either vertical or horizontal launch so the difference in safety is non-existent.
