Neighbors said the seedy first-floor home of the family was like a small zoo with two pit bulls, a German shepherd, a parrot and a snake.
The family used to own a rabbit, but it was recently eaten by one of the dogs, neighbors said.
And the dog was supposedly caged all the time? No wonder it went nuts. I'll bet the shepherd wasn't particarly friendly either.
Ugh

Doesnt help that these dogs are kept in small appts and arent taken out much. Dogs like that def need room, plus in that area some are used by drug dealers as attack dogs.

Common misconception actually. PitBulls make GREAT apartment dogs, even small apartments. I used to live in a 14ft pop-out camper with a 60lb male Pit Bull. They key, of course, is to exercise them every day give lots of love, good foods, etc. etc. etc.
Dogs that live in cages definitely go crazy though.

From the description of the apartment, she was practically an animal hoarder.
No way she was taking proper care of them (the kids or the animals).
Damn shame for the kid, though. :(

Absolutely. One of my best friends has a 70+ pound pit in her little townhouse and its an incredible dog. Always super friendly and very very loyal. Not to mention its very protective of her and her daughter. Theres a reason that people refer to pit bulls as a nanny breed, but just like every other dog they have to be trained by someone who isnt retarded and owned by someone who can give them the excercise, food, etc that derf mentioned.
but just like every other dog they have to be trained by someone who isnt retarded and owned by someone who can give them the excercise, food, etc that derf mentioned.
I didnt mention shit. But since you bring it up:
I blame the owners. I know the neigborhood (here comes the racist in me), i grew up there, well the next neigborhood over anyway. Remember the crown heights riots of the early 90s? Its that neigborhood, and nothing has changed. Its a super low class neigborhood, the type of place you dont walk down the street unless you want to get robbed. The people that live there use the dog as a status symbol not a pet, the dog is a look at me toy, comparible to the way squids treat their sport bikes.
I would be wiling to make a very safe bet that the dog was trained to be vicious. For a very good description of what I believe the environment that this dog was living in please refer to any DMX song made "my dogs fight ruf ruf" "my dogs bite ruf ruf"

Wow not sure how I managed that one other than completely not paying attention. But yea that sounds about right. Vick has admitted that he got involved in dog fights very young because of the same thing. His borther would be out there with a few nasty pit bulls fighting them right in front of the run down apartments they grew up in and he always saw it so he thought that in order to be respected and cool that he had to get into it too.

You ready? http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/05/29/2011-05-29_mutant_mutt_was_trained_to_kill_by_owner.html
The malevolent mutt that fatally mauled a 4-year-old boy as his terrified brothers watched from beneath a bed was trained to kill by the dead child's stepdad, neighbors said Saturday.
Now, it's a mutt...
And, the FIRST comment:
I hope to god they KILL that ***---ing dog. Pit bulls, Mastiffs, bull terriers ALL need to be put down. Any ****** who says "They've never shown any aggression, why he was just a big playful puppy" I hope your dog bites the sh--- out of you. Those dogs will snap, because it it something in their genetic makeup that they will turn and kill and many times on the same people who raised them, and the dog does not have to be raised as an attack dog to kill someone either. I do not like dogs, and cannot understand why the hell anyone would want one as a pet.

The same can be said for those children left in the room with that dog. Most animals do not attack unless provoked - any guess if the kid gave the dog a whack?

No, that dog needs to be put down. I would be willing to bet that if left alive it attacks others, the article specifically says that the owner trained it to fight, and that he regularly walked around with an arm pad teaching the dog to bite. This dog wasnt acting like an animal, it was acting like a fighting machine.
Its not the dogs fault, but he will pay for it. The owner though, if all the allegations about him teaching the dog to be a fighting do are true should be charged with 2nd degree Murder under Ny's alternative murder charges, thats murder that was not pre-meditated.

I don't see where it says the dog was trained to fight anywhere in the article.

Granted its probably news sensationalism, but I will refer to my earlier statement about my pre-concieved notions about the folks I know that live in that neighborhood and why they own dogs like that. Dog fighting is cool, its a hobby and a way of life, and even if he wasnt into dog fighting, having a vicious dog is cool and gets respect

Pits are good dogs, but their problem is that they learn really well. the reason that they are known as good babysitter dogs is because they can be trained to babysit really well. Its the same reason that when trained they are great fighters, they take their training really well.

So sad. I dont blame the dog. While I do think certain breeds are more inclined to the "snap and attack", and yes a pit is genetically inclined, it's the owners responsiblity to raise that animal so that it isn't a danger, and if it is, to take the necessary precautions. It's disgusting. What fraggin moron would even allow dogs he's trained to fight to be within eyesight of his children?!?
Down here we have alot of the "gangstas" tramping around with their pits on chains with spiked collars, looking all tough and bad ass. They dont know crap about the breed or dog handling or training, but they look cool and I guess thats all that matters right?
Sadly, the dogs have no training, are typically fairly friendly, but if it got loose, chances are it's getting shot or picked up and euthanized. I'll tell ya what, animal lover that I am, if a pit came running through my yard and looked twice at my dogs, he wouldnt stand a chance. Yeah Im stereotyping, but with all the idiot owners, you never know what the disposition is gonna be.

We're doing an enclosure at a house. I'll snap a pic of a dog there. I think he's pit and something else. Poor guy was abused or got no attention. The home owner says he usually gets abandon animals so at least he has a better home now. He had a new collar on today. Each day it takes awhile for him to come up to you. Even after petting him for awhile he'll go lay down and if you walk towards him, he'll get up and leave the area. I just do my calm voice and he'll sometimes keep laying where he is.
