Started this morning, the first reports are coming in
http://www.ironbuttrally.com/ibr/2011.cfm
I would love to try and do that one day. I did 500-600 mile days by myself easy for 14 days straight. I could up it a lot with people to keep me awake.

I want to try it one of these days too. I can do 1000 days, day in and day out.
I'm looking forward to the reports!

sounds like a plan
I wonder how many days we would make it. LOL I say 4 or 5 before we end up crashing at some hotel and racing wheel chairs.

TO BE A FINISHER OF THE 2011 IRON BUTT RALLY, you must visit all 48 Lower States (getting a computer-generated receipt of any kind, and make the checkpoints on time. That's it.
However, to place well, there are two additional opportunities for points: do a documented SCMA Four-Corners Ride during the 11-day Iron Butt Rally, in addition to the mandatory Lower 48 states.
One can also visit certain state capitols and photograph them. Only certain capitols are "eligible" on any given leg.
A rather different Iron Butt Rally this year.... back to it's roots: pure, unadulterated mega-mileage. B)
Also on tap are the usual Sleep Bonuses, but this year, you actually obtain more points by sleeping *longer*.... one point per minute of sleep: minimum of 240 points (2 hr sleep) up to a maximum of 480 points (4 hour sleep).
A welcomed change is the elimination of the mandatory fuel log! In this IBR, your ability to finish doesn't hinge on fuel logs and receipts, rather, you must proved you visited each of the Lower 48 states via a computer-generated receipt from each state. You can use any route you want, as long as you make it to the Checkpoints in NY and FL within the checkpoint window.
Interesting

The fuel log killed my ex's ability to finish in the 2009 rally. I bet he's pissed about that
The leader of the rally went down. This is sad. This dude got Alaska and was going to get the 4 corners. He was way ahead, one dude had a shot to beat him cause he got Key West on leg 2. Would of been a classic battle.
This is 10 days of riding.

Did 900+ miles in a day once, kinda boring for the last few hours, but not painful or anything. 1,000 miles not that big a deal on a reasonably comfy bike.

The first day, no. 11 days in a row is a WHOLE 'nother thing though.
I've done 1200 mile days on my Hayabusa. Do I recommend it? Hell no! :lol
The BMW, I've done a 900 mile day and could have done a few hundred more.
"Reasonably comfy" being the key there.

yes... I've done 750 in a day on the DRZ with Gas and Capt... I didn't want to sit down for a few hours when I got to Trips... my ass hurt for a good three days...
I did 980 on my ZZR and only stopped because I reached my destination. I could have gone on, though I was crazy tired.
But yeah get on a big comfy tourer... it's another story... still insane day after day
Ive done a few really high mile days and yep the comfort of the bike makes the difference between being able to do it day after day

how does the comfort/lack of speed of the KLR compare to the Speed/lack of comfort of the Honda?
Night and day. its easy to get frustrated on the KLR on the highway or while accelerating because of its lack of power.
I shouldn't get frustrated because it has the same acceleration as just about any compact car on the market today. but as a bike it falls flat on its face. I changed the gear ratio of the final drive so that as a thumper it isnt spinning at 5k vibrating me to death on the highway, its now much more comfortable at 75mph where before it would be almost painful to go over 65, the vibrations were crazy (all I did was go up 1 on the front sprocket). Its fairly comfortable and I can sit on it all day, and it has plenty of room to let me move around. The biggest down side which is easily fixable is that without the big windshield I get blown around and wiped out from fighting the wind, with the big windshield (thats what I have on it now) its not bad.
The CBR is angry and powerful and uncomfortable. Its really not bad, but being leaned over like that for hours can take its toll on the body. When I rode to the rally last year I had that monster tank bag which I filled up as much as possible to lean against. and that worked great, but the body position for anything over a few hours is enough to break your back. I can do a 1000 mile day on it, but I need to use heat pads to keep from cramping up between my shoulders and on my lower back
Surprisingly I used to have a shadow which was much less comfortable than either of my current bikes, my ass went through teh seat in half an hour and I felt like I was sitting on the frame, the bike chugged along with no problem but the position of my arms put my hands at chest height and it would just wipe me out after a few hours, in fact with that bike a 300 mile day would just kill me.

Think I saw a v-strom or two in there. Lots of BMW and Honda. Not many Harleys
