BOSTON (CBS) – Some local anti-obesity advocates are proposing a controversial solution for overweight children. They want to take some “extremely obese” children away from their parents, and place them in foster homes.

Children’s Hospital obesity expert, Dr. David Ludwig, proposed the idea in an editorial along with Lindsey Murtagh, an attorney with Harvard’s School of Public Health.

“Despite the discomfort posed by state intervention, it may sometimes be necessary to protect a child.”

Their opinion was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Ludwig says he got the idea when he met a 3-year-old who was 90 pounds. By the time she was 12, she was 400 pounds. When the state placed her in foster care, she was put on a diet of three square meals and lost 130 pounds.

Other experts agree the issue is more serious than most people realize.

“Over a long period of time, high blood pressure can affect your heart, the small blood vessels in your eyes, your brain and your kidneys, and it really can be quite serious,” says Massachusetts medical Society dietitian Denise Rollinson.

At the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, the proposal had parents talking.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Carl Stevens reports

“I definitely believe the government has to step in and do something,” says mom Rachel Nicholls.

“I don’t believe it’s strictly a parental issue,” says father Victor Acosta. “It’s a social one, and as Americans we bear a great responsibility for what we put on TV and on the internet, and what they see and what we direct them toward.”

I'm personally torn on the issue. If you're feeding your kid soda and pizza for every meal and not working him out you're definitely setting him up to have a myriad of debilitating conditions for the rest of his/her life.

Would the state remove children that parents allowed to smoke? Pretty much the same thing here. But of course government removing children from their parents seems to go wrong more often than not. Perhaps there is a much better solution out there...

Novel concept but a lot of these foster homes arent much better, plus traumatizing the kid by taking him away from his family.

This is already starting to become a burden on healthcare and will only get worse as they get older and mor eproblems develop.

You have better beer than I do (though I recently found a local shop about 8 miles from my house that has like 50 local micro-brews as well as a ton of foreign beers  ). Get to it!

Yes, but that trauma might cause the child to lose weight, thereby solving the weight issue.

Eh, it's putting a bandaid on a much bigger social problem. You might help some kids (and traumatize plenty as well), but you're not fixing the real issues.

So banning them from restaurants will help, right?

Perhaps, instead of sending them into foster care, we should rotate them out with children from countries beset by famine.
Bring the stick figures here, let the parents fatten them up, and then rotate their formerly fat children back to them.
We can solve obesity and world hunger with one program!

How bout we just shoot the parents? Obviously they are dumb and we just don't want that in our perfect society.

"The Man" has his hands in too much already. We as a people need to learn to take care of ourselves, and there is only one way to do that. Actually DO IT. Next we're going to have a gov official come check to be sure we are wiping our asses properly.

WTF?

Though I'm not a huge fan of the 16th, I fail to see how repealing the Federal income tax, will result in skinnier children.

It won't, but neither will giving some over bloated government bureaucracy the big brother authority to be looking over our shoulders micromanaging our lives to the extent that central planners will be giving us our menus for the week.

Also, repealing the 16th Amendment, will starve to government to the point they won't have money to pass out to even conduct stupid ass studies like this.

I vote for a skinnier government
