I worked in a graveled covered switchyard climbing large breakers and tranformers when I was with transmission. Working out in 100 degree heat outside for an entire shift was nothing to having to put on a banana suit and go Steam Generator jumping in the can at the nuke plant. I would much rather be outside than do what Cave does.

Yep, been there, done that. Whenever I hear people complain about the heat, I just remember Kuwait in the summer and I'm fine. Rode my bike yesterday in this heat, wearing full gear. Got looked at like I was crazy. Most people in the US don't know what true heat is like.

I took my daughter to my parent's house Wed to swim. The cover has been off the pool for a week, but since there hasn't been any rain, the water was 92 degrees. It really sucks when jumping in the pool doesn't even cool you off.

I want to jump in but my skin may fall off with all the chemicals we have churning through there LOL When i was cleaning out the skimmers the water felt prety cool but the pool isnt in that much direct sunlight for the whole day either.

Our 20X40 inground was 78 degrees earlier in the week. Will have to see what it is now. All the pollen in the air has kept the deep end cloudy still and I'm tired of effing around with it.

It's 101F as I type this....it's been 100+ for 2...maybe 3 weeks straight?
The corn crop in this area is a total loss....the wheat crop was marginal, at best....the town I live in has mandatory water restrictions in place as the supply is dangerously low. Not sure how this story is gonna end if it doesn't rain, a lot, SOON.

We're in a similar predicament. Lake Travis is at something like 20ft below normal levels. We've had a few spits of rain once or twice in as many months.

At least your outside where there is the possibility, however slight, of a breeze, and of course, there is the respite in the shade. The plant is everywhere a minimum of 115°F. Not to mention the equipment, can't lean on any unistrut or superstructure or even the concrete walls. Holds the heat worse than anything I know. Plus, if I have to dress out for a Contaminated Area. Thats a layer of clothing here in the plant I am wearing coveralls (they breathe better), and then a non breathing plastic suit with booties cotton gloves with rubber over boots and gloves and a hood. So quit your bitchin about climbin on tanks, your OUTSIDE.

I was in Kuwait as well. 130° any where outside. However, I found that after about 10 to 15 min of a good sweat the breeze would come by and dry ya off and then it was at least tolerable. Its so hot in the plant with no breeze that you sweat from EVERYWHERE. And its real nice when it starts runnin down the crack of your ass. Great feelin there, love it like a stomach pump.

Dude, I have been in the same situation when we worked on breakers in the switchyard. We had to put on the suits to climb in oil filled breakers that had been drained for us to inspect. It's hot, but it's not the same as a nuclear plant. It's just not even close.
Let me know when you are wearing 2 to 3 sets of clothing depending on radioactivity and standing next to a reactor that is somewhere around 600 degrees. This is in a nice small enclosed steel vessel which is incased in a not much bigger concrete structure. Our stay times are limited to minutes and we have to go in on the buddy system, because you sort of skip the dehydration phase and go straight to the "you're dead" phase just from the heat.

This. My uncle lives in Phoenix. I had to call him and poke fun that we were hotter than he was. Honestly its not the heat that I dont like, its the humidity. I was out in Phoenix one time on break. We were out at the pool all day, no problem. My mom yelled out that we needed to come in for a break because heat stroke can happen faster out there. We laughed and said it wasnt that hot. She said that the current temperature was 111*. I had no problem. Its when you can cut the air with a goddamn butter knife.

Yea, corn is fucked up here. The massive ammounts of water in the spring delayed planting, and now the crop is being screwed because of the heat. You can barely find anything with good kernel size to eat. I dont think we have any current water restrictions, but we barely use outside water anyway.

I have had to wear 4 pairs of booties at once before when doing the motor walk downs. We ran into the can, inspected two motors, removed one set of booties before exiting the can. Ran into the can in another spot, inspected another motor, removed another bootie. Did that one more time and the last pair was removed when we left the radiological controlled area. Same goes for gloves, we have to wear additional pairs depending on the work we are doing.
You are also not allowed to have any food or drink in the RCA, so there is no hydrating til you are done working. You have to hydrate before you enter.
The hottest suit in the plant is the suit people like Caveman have to wear to rack breakers in and out. They have to wear forced air systems with them if they are in them for extended periods of time.

Serious question for those in the NE...do most people up there have air conditioning in their homes? I remember summers in San Antonio with no a/c....I really do feel sorry for those without it dealing with those temps. We expect it to be this hot and have the means to combat it.
Kinda like when we get snow and ice and people die because we don't have anyway to deal with it.

A lot of newer houses have central air. Some have window units. Others, like me, don't because it isn't worth it for the short amount of time that just having decent insulation to keep the cool air in (comes in at night from opening windows) is enough.

Id say 90% of homes built after 1980 in central and northern ohio have central ac. Those that don't have window units.

Not sure how dry NE is, but in UT, we had swamp coolers instead of a/c units. The air is so dry out west that swamp coolers are better because they don't dry out the air inside the house any more than it already is.

Ah yes, gotta love the drywell entry teams when they are making sure that we have purged the Nitrogen out of it and you have to go in with double PC's and on a SCBA respirator. Thats double AWESOME. not to mention when you go in for 2 hour long surveillances and you are in pc's with extra gloves to protect yourself from steam temps.
I had to go into our Feedpump room and close an instrument valve that had a busted line spewing 500° steam with a proximity suit. Looks like the fire suits that oil drillers where to put out the oil fires.
Then the suit that Trip is talkin bout (45 cal) is a bitch in this weather. Gotta wear for flash protection so we don't get all toastie if the break decides it wants not cooperate. It can get upwards of 125° in that damn thing and look like Darth Vader, completely covered and very HOT.

Yeah I am damn glad I am not one of you guys. I couldn't do that shit all the time. Back when I had the motor program, I chased the Radcon guys into the can as soon as we were allowed to go in for outages. We had to do inspections with the RCP motors still running. So I was literally one of the first people in the can. It was only an hour job, but I hated every minute of doing it and dreaded it every time I had to do it. We have 4 motors, I only made it to 3 the first time I did it. I was forced out because of heat exhaustion. Had to have another engineer finish the inspection for me.
