Took the Silver C3 in for inspection.
Mind you, it's a 1969 L46 350HP 350, with 11 to 1 compression.
Asshole dweeb at the DMV lets my fucking car idle for 5 minutes before testing it. I watched him do it.
Of course, this is a car that will eventually wet its plugs enough to shut off.
It's not a commuter car.
While the DMV computer requires that they hold your motor at 2500 to test it, he did NOT even clear the thing's throat with a rev beforehand, after letting it drown for five fucking minutes.
Shockingly, I failed emissions.
The guy that moves my car to the end then manages to set the brake insufficiently, and my car rolls off the pad, and half out of the building before he gets it under control.
I asked him to try and not wreck my car.
He went asshole on me.
Me and his manager had a talk afterwards.
He was nice, and professional, but overall, it was NOT a positive experience.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
I have a brand new Tach Drive HEI 60Kvolt fucking "arc welder" ignition, Moroso Blue Max Spiral core wires, a set of hotter R45 plugs, and a factory fresh Holley 4165 spread bore Q-jet replacement that says it fucking goddamn passes next time, no matter what the motherfucking assmunch at the DMV does.

It's stupid that older, big engine cars are even required to pass emissions. It's near impossible for them to do so.

That's what I was thinking.
No free pass for classics, huh?

Not unless I register it QQ (classic car).
Then I'm limited to 5000 miles, and Sundays.

Here in CA, anything pre-1976 is exempt from emissions testing.
Oh but wait, we're supposed to be a communist pinko state.
Uhh isint that pre catalytic convertor? Wtf are they thinking?

The limousine-liberal politicians might have been stupid enough to think it would benefit low-income people. In reality, low-income people are buying mid 80's Nissans.

Same wheels! That's just what careful tire stagger can do.
Rears are 20mm wider...barely noticeable, but it gives it "stance".

Agonized over this shit for about 3 days. Think I nailed it.
Stock was 215/70/15 or F70-15

Nice. I went 245's all the way around my cutlass. stock was a 195. Thought about a stagger, but with my love of the burnouts, I like being able to rotate tires.

Nobody fucking makes a 245 anymore. Not in 15.
Ideally, I wanted 245 in front, and 265 in rear. Both sizes are not really available anymore in a 15.
There's a 275, and even a 295 (!), but that shit woulda looked boy racer out the ass.
This is spot on for my taste, and no rubs.

Those are only 15's? Wow.
I guess that makes sense though. I don't know anything about the 70's, but during the 80's, 16's were considered exotic

Try to source them today.
They're kinda phasing out a lot of their 15" sizes. All new cars have bigger shoes.

Maybe they just ran off a batch. People were screaming that 255s were unavailable, but those I managed to get.
So now they have the 245s...but can you get the rears 20mm wider, in a 265, for the right overall stagger?
I'm happy with what I got...I think more might have been too much. The whole car is subtle, no sidepipes, flat hood. I think the sizes look right without being boy racer, which is what I wanted. The redlines looked too fucking stodgy.
To me, this is just right.

Here's the 275s on the rear of a C3...see, I think these are just a little too big. Look a bit boy racer-ish to me...the 275 is just too square-shouldered on an 8" wheel.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a351/Tonystoys123/different%20stuff/Picture337.jpg
This is probably 245s in the front, 275s in the rear.
Avatard
08-17-2011, 07:51 PM
The flared one I have has aluminum slots on it, and it has 10" deep dish ones in the rear.
THAT car will get 255s in front, and 275s in the rear. With the big Hooker pipes, and the flares, anything smaller would look wrong. It's all about fitting the tires to the car, and filling the fenders right, giving it the right stagger to bring out the waist, and highlight the bodylines.
European stylists always filled their wheel wells nicely (think BMW). American Musclecars seemingly always benefited from a little up-sizing to make their styling really "pop".

Dude, large diameter shit is off the hook, crazy expensive by comparison. I'd like to know how it is that the sidewall gets shorter, and yet the bill gets higher.

Your car wets the plugs because it is random misfiring due to a high exhaust valve overlap, not high compression.

Thanks.
I feel like a fucking movie star in this thing, and it cost me about as much as a modern econoshitbox. Will I pay the penalty in gas? Sure. Does your right pantleg get wet in the rain? Damn skippy. Can you carry anything in it? Not a fucking chance...it has no trunk, no glovebox. That all goes without saying...but I don't fucking go anywhere, and this thing really should be driven on nice days. This is my moment of zen car. Fits me like an old pair of shoes. Uncanny.
I've been drawing pictures of this car since I was a kid. I had the Mako Shark II Corgi with the flip open clamshell headlights, and the HotWheels of it. This was the show car that made me drool as a kid. This is my dream car. I can't wait until she actually runs as good as she looks.
I had to source a trick offset aircleaner to make my carb swap work under the flat hood, and still clear the new HEI distributor I got...but once that comes in, she gets all the mechanical updates in order to make her run right, and pass inspection. All the stock parts go on the shelf.
Some might argue it's almost criminal to take an NCRS quality survivor car, and use it as a driver. Others might argue just looking at a fucking car, and keeping it like a bug in a jar is real nice and all, but cars need to be driven in order to really stay fresh. This car is already showing some signs of having been perhaps stared at too long, and not really driven enough.
Rather than affect the value, I feel that if I change things to make it a competent driver, but I just save all the original parts, I'm both keeping the car in use, and yet preserving the originality in case the next owner gives a shit about that kinda thing.
Me, I just wanna drive my dream car.
As for any future mods, I'm fighting the urge to put headers on it...and the fucking cost is actually making that quite a bit easier...and it would really benefit from some modern stoppers. They make shit that fits inside the stock wheels, but still brings things up to a modern performance level.
I'd probably stop there on this one, though. I do like the fact that it's pretty much unmolested...simple, elegant.

No mod. Stock 15x8 Rallys.
Your car wets the plugs because it is random misfiring due to a high exhaust valve overlap, not high compression.
Actually, it wets its plugs because it has a Quadrajet, and an inefficient, old, points distributor.
That's being remedied with a Holley, and a 60,000 Volt HEI.
:lmao:
The cam in the L46 is actually pretty smooth. I'm used to some pretty sick bumpsticks.

Nice. I almost went 15x10's but changed my mind when I went to order.
I also agree that the 275's look a bit big on that car. I just wanted to prove my point that 245's were still available!

Nice. I had the same tires on the 79. Can't remember if I had 255 rear and 245 front, or if I just went 245 all the way around. Either way, those tires just look right on that car.

I have 255/60-15 Pirelli's on all four corners of my '77. Only the slightest bit of rub at full lock.
