A buddy of mine just graduated MSF today. He's looking for his first bike. He'd like a standard or sport standard, and he's got about $3500-4000 to spend.

What would you guys recommend for him?

Buell.

That would be the easy recommendation. I'm looking for other options I hadn't thought of.

I would suggest an EX500, EX650R, older 600, or an SV650 S or naked model. sorry but I refuse to recommend buells. After riding the blast, my opinion is they SUCK NUTS.

Good for you....base your opinion on the entire line on one bike.

My friend's 19-year-old son just bought a 2000 VFR 800. Even though his friends have Gixxers and R6's, he couldn't be happier. He also took the MSF and is reading Total Control.

Whoever accused the VFR of being slow or a starter bike? That bike snorts along quite nicely thankyou!

If it's any consolation, the Blast DOES suck nuts.

Ask him if he wants to get laid. If so tell him to get a "K8 Gixxer 1" and invest the rest of his money into Abercrombie and Flip Flops. Riding is all about image anyways.

A bike I'd recommend is the Yamaha XJ600 (SecaII). I got a 1994 SecaII for $1500 for my first bike. It was as fast as a stock 350z up until 80mph then the 350z was gone. Very nimble and good midrange tq for great city driving. It could cruise comfortably and not be screaming at 80mph on the interstate and have found out they were nicknamed the "Swiss Army Bike" because they could do it all and were very dependable. I got it to a 135mph on the Spedo one time. Took a while to get there but it got there (With me in shorts at that time)

I sold mine after a few months and got a CBR600 F3 but I still miss that Yamaha SecaII. Which after I sold it the bike was wrecked at 55mph and still running strong. Then had a 400lb rider on it for a while who wrecked it and had the bike get ran over by a truck. I rode the bike the next day. I swear a freaking tank.

But so far some good recomendations have been made. Not sure about the VFR though.

I rode a mid 90's Kat once, it was bulky, but not too bad.

A lot like riding a pink 92 GSXR 750, only it wouldn't have to be pink.

Fuck that. I know of a pink GSXR that would destroy any and all Kats. Hands down.

Well while chillin at the pizza joint in Franklin tonight I heard and saw a 08 ninja 250 that would have anyone short of a real rider saying what was that? A 600? 750? It was piped and sounded way beefier than a 250. With all there improvements and a $3499 price tag what can touch it for fun factor and a newbie at the helm?

my $.02
