The dog of slain Petty Officer Jon Tumilson refused to leave his side during the Navy SEAL’s funeral earlier this week in Rockford, Iowa. The heartbreaking photo taken by his cousin, Lisa Pembleton, shows Tumilson’s dog Hawkeye lying by the casket.

Navy SEAL U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jon T. Tumilson was among the 30 American troops killed August 6 when Taliban insurgents downed their Chinook helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade. At his funeral in Iowa, his dog Hawkeye paid his last respects, walking up to the casket, lying down in front of it, and heaving a sigh.

I'd argue that you are less than human if you can watch that and not feel a sharp pain in your heart.

Ouch.

Jesus Christ... DON'T watch the video!!!

It's really fucking amazing the bond that develops between people and their animals...

Yesterday I dropped Belle off at the vet to get her spayed... Normally, she could give a flying fuck about me... at the dog park, around the house, everywhere... As I was leaving the exam room, she sat there and whined, trying to watch me as the door shut. Never felt that close of a bond to her until that very moment.

Two honourable souls right there.

I understand the bond fully. Everybody who knows me knows I`d rather live on the streets with my dogs than in a house without them. It wouldn`t even be up for debate.

RIP SEAL, and I hope somebody takes good care of your best friend.

na, eventually you'll get old and that shit will quit working for you. Even as an old man your dog will still listen to commands.

It's sad watching dogs get old. My dog is only 5 and I can see noticeable difference in his energy level when he plays.

The dog gets old too, you have to get new ones. You only get one penis, well, most of us only get one.

Viagra works too, yo.

Even when I get old, I can't imagine a situation where it is either the penis or the dog and the penis not winning.

The bond of your children should also be a billion times stronger than that of a pet as well. A pet will never be a child, no matter how much childless adults whine about it.

Yeah, last weekend I was at a friends place, his oldest dog is 14 and probably won't hunt with us this year. Gonna be tough losing her.
Made me realize that in 9 years, I'll probably have kids around 6-7 years old. My dog will be 12, and probalby on her final years. The kids will have been around her all their lives, so it's gonna be tough for them and me...

The nice thing is my dog was pretty unruly for a long time. In the last year he's become really loyal and (mostly) well behaved. Still gets really wild when people visit...but that usually lasts a minute or two and he calms down. He loves visitors.

Mine (being a lab) is still hyperactive all the time, but actually really well behaved around kids.
Recently she has gotten more protective of me and the wife though. Actually barked and growled at the meter reader coming through the yard yesterday.

I just hugged my dog.

That was my first reaction too....but he's at home and I'm at work...so I looked at bunch of pics of him and I from my mobile and photobucket. I can't wait to get home to take him to the park tonight.

That hurt to look at...but....it was a nice "back to center" check....a re-emphasis on the importance of having true friends....no matter their species.

I could not have said it better myself. There is not much I would not do for Diesel including antibiotic injections starting next week.

As far as the black lab in the story I read that he is going to one of the SEAL’s friends that spoke at the funeral.

I saw this on FB, tears are just now drying up but know they'll be back if I watch the video.

Max will be 13 next month and I just pray that he stays in good health over the next year. The last few years have been rough; two knee surgeries and teeth cleaning/pulling. He was under 3 times in about 2 months. Rougher on me than him I think.

that story is awesome.

i miss my dogs. they couldn't come down with me right away. can't wait till next week when they come down. the boxer has been pretty lonely without me there. the bulldog doesn't care so much.

hope they don't mind trading a huge yard for a big doggy play park. it is pretty nice actually with lots of agility type apparatus. Besides that there is a lake right behind the camper.

A very sad story indeed..... dogs are absolutely amazing animals! As was mentioned above, Hawkeye has been adopted by one of Jon's good friends, who Hawkeye knows very well. So at least a happy ending to a very sad story...

And since we're all posting doggy pictures..... my 3 kiddos. They mean the absolute world to me...

And each other, apparently... (I had absolutely nothing to do with staging this pic... they did it 100% entirely on their own)

Highly doubt it was staged, but if they did, that would be just as fucked up as 101's post. It's already a downed soldier, why go over the top? As I said before, doubt it was staged, dogs have an incredible sense of smell, he knew who was in there.
