Our fire resources are maxed out. :( the entire city of bastrop, tx has been evacuated. 14,000 acres and 0% containment.
Add to that the 5 other smaller fires. All of these in very populated areas.... not just ranchland.
its been pouring all day here... My grass went from brown as shit to weed infested green.

I just drove back to Florida from Wis. all the way down was in the rain. everything not in the cab of the truck is drenched even though tarped. Wish I could have sent some of it your way.
This may seem cold given the gravity of the situation there but, for some reason the first thing I thought of when I saw your thread title......."the roof, the roof the roof is on fire. We don't need no water let the m%$#%#er burn!! Burn m$#@$#er burn."
I did mention we just drove back down here right? I think I need a nap.
Seriously I hope they get it under control. I got to deal with that for the first time here in Florida this year. Not fun, and I wasn't even very close. at least 10 miles away.

The ridiculous irony for me is that I had to cancel my plans in Mississippi this morning due to flooding and got to drive through Bastrop County on my way home with all the horrendous traffic due to evacuations.
Sad day for sure. I heard on the radio that 1 in 3 homes in Bastrop will burn before they even get it remotely under control. :(
I am going to work out an evacuation plan just in case.
I took this on 290 right after entering Bastrop county. I got much closer (within 1 or 2 miles) later but the traffic by that point was too crazy to try and snap a quick picture.

Yeah, we had a bit of a scare last night, with a small wildfire causing evacuations up to the street next to ours (and the wind blowing it our way). At least I had a bit of a fire break next to my house, since the neighbor burned her house down about 6 weeks ago and there's nothing but an empty slab there. My windows are still boarded up after breaking from the heat of that fire.
Not fun pondering losing the house again. My thoughts go out to all the folks in Bastrop and Steiner that weren't so lucky. :(

Yikes... my mom e-mailed me yesterday to tell me that Saturday night her neighborhood (in south Austin, near Slaughter/Manchaca) had a fire near the Catholic church, and they were getting embers blown onto the houses in her section (about 2-3 miles away, other side of the neighborhood). I have several friends and coworkers who live out in the Bastrop area too.. and of course y'all in Cedar Park. :( I don't have a lot of room in the apartment, but we have a fold-out couch if anyone needs a place to crash..

Tye's parents were asked by the HOA to evacuate but not yet by Emergency services from the fires around Hamilton Pool / Dripping springs area. So far they are ok but that's to close for comfort. We're pretty far from the ones currently burning but so many keep popping up no where is really safe at this point. We walked around the house last night and discussed exactly what we would grab if we have to get out. It's funny what is really important to you when you look at it like that.
one folder of paperwork, 2 small boxes of pictures and stuff from my Mom and granddad, the dog, the cat and us...Everything else we can replace...

We had lunch with our AFD friend who worked all day Sunday and Monday through Tuesday morning. He took off today to rest and is going back at noon tomorrow.
He explained what contained meant, how Bastrop was a fire begging to happen for years now with all the pine trees there and that rednecks out in the sticks have been feeding them very well while on duty. :D
Also, he told us what to look for when we see smoke to determine if it's going to be a threat to you.
One friend who lives in Bastrop has been allowed to return home. They just have to boil all their water for a while.

Regulations and contract negotiations.
Just saw on the news they are NOT flying until tomorrow because they "Need a qualified pilot."
It's all weird and horrible politics. The company that owns them are using their FB page to try and get an exclusive contract with the US Forest Service. They have been fighting fires in California before coming here - so their pilots needed to sit out and rest per federal regulations.
People are REALLY emotional about it right now.
Bastrop needs them to make it rain...

Texas fires destroy one collector's 175 classic carsThe good news for one Texas man near the massive wildfires is that his home was merely singed, and his family escaped uninjured. The bad news was what the fire took instead — some 175 classic cars, including a Shelby Cobra and about a dozen Corvettes.
John Chapman, 70, was shuffling through the ash-covered remains of his collection spread through a garage and several pole barns shorty after the fire moved through, pushing burning embers off what had been left behind. Other vehicles lost included several mid-'50s Chevys, a 1947 Studebaker pickup and a 1966 Pontiac GTO.
"You can either laugh or you can cry," Chapman told the Houston Chronicle. "You might as well laugh.""

That's what they did.
What arrangements? They were arresting people that would violate barricades. It may have been different in the Magnolia fire than the Bastrop fire. After having two fires close enough that our neighbors were evacuated, you REALLY start to weigh what is truly important. I mean, we have two cars, one truck, three motorcycles in my garage. And, only three drivers. We could probably fit two of the bikes into the truck. But then, we can't take other stuff with us.

I'm amazed that the one thing that HAS to be taken is ur guns!!! lol
We see alot of fires in CA....every year it's the same mojo. The difference is the smoke here has nowhere to go as it gets pushed between the mountains to the east and the ocean to the west. So....you can't see 100 feet in the air as well as ash falling everywhere.

I'd take the guns because
A: I don't want rounds going off while the house is burning
B: I don't want any fire, police, public service or government agency messing with them because I may not get them back or used in their records. My guns = my business
C: If they DONT burn, I still would like their use for defense or fun despite being temporarily homeless.
D: The investment comes last because I bought them for other things, however in the post-apocalypse, guns and fuel will be the best monetary system we could have. :P

I'd ride nude before letting my bike burn. There's a goodwill or salvation army close by.

you have your hobbies we have our, the amount of $ you spend on gym fee's put into savings yada yada yada
your "attitude" is one from in a communist state, so you wouldn't understand. you've been there too long.
Other than higher taxes and strict gun laws, CA is the polar opposite to a Communist state. I can guarantee that TX is far more of a police state than CA. Add NJ to that list too...

Btw, fires are still burning. It's just now past all the homes in the area, so it's not big news.

I had to evacuate my hotel in FL today because of a fire alarm. I was not happy, but luckily it was a false alarm.
Moira pointed out: "They just wanted to make you feel at home."

Don't know if it happened this time or not, but the last time it rained it was lightning for about a half hour before the "rain" came. The lightning started a couple grass fires. Can't even get rain in west Texas without shit burning down.

we got a small sprinkling in South Austin this morning and around lunch. Enough to wet the roads for 30 minutes but that's about it.

I'm amazed that the one thing that HAS to be taken is ur guns!!! lol
Late to the party on this, but homeowners insurance doesn't typically cover much if anything on firearms (1,000-2,500 from just searching a bit). I've got almost 4K in just my AR.

You can probably take out a personal articles policy separately from your homeowner's. I've done that for some jewelry in the past (not mine redflip ).

Round Rock got a decent rain.
My crunchy dead grass was soggy dead grass this morning, and I actually got mud on my shoes walking the dog.
(and to silence the inevitable comments, yes, it was mud :P )

By "normal" he means what we need to not be in a serious drought anymore.
