my last company sold these for a client.
we got a sample its pretty cool.
you could chew one and then have coffee with no sugar, and it would be sweet. or even eat a lemon raw, with a similar effect.

And the FDA banned it for use as a sweetener, why?

Probably has little to do with safety, and more to do with money.

Every artificial substitute in the USA has been denied, banned, or forced to carry warnings at one time or another. We are only one of two countries (I believe) that still outlaws sodium cyclamate.

The US must have very strong lobbies that protect the sugar industry.

There's a reason it's called "Big Sugar". Just like "Big Tobacco", just slightly less lethal.

Corn wasn't in the sugar biz until a decade ago.

Also people will say it causes cancer.

Why would you want it as a commercial sweetener, when it sticks to your tongue for an hour, sweetening every low-pH concoction it comes in contact with? Neat party trick, but by the time it's be processed enough to be work like sugar, I'd be scared of what they turned it into.
