View Full Version : Almost ready to publish my second photobook

Last time it took me roughly 4.5 months, to get my 2010 'racing yearbook' put together, and out in print. This time it'll be a little more than a month, from the end of the racing season around here. Talk about a steep learning curve
One other track photographer I know has already produced a book about the Canadian XR1200 series, stating that he shamelessly ripped off my idea. Good for him! As photographers we need to (a) raise the bar and (b) find a way to actually make a little money on the game. There's damned all in it.
Two others will also be producing books, this year. One is a friend, who does fantastic work. The other is a French guy who doesn't understand that the rest of us use telephoto lenses so that we aren't stepping on each others' shots. May he choke on his poutine.

cool. by published, do you mean published like a real book, or just going through one of those photographer - printing companies that will make pretty photo albums.?

Blurb.com - Print on demand service. Here's the link to my first one: http://www.blurb.com/books/2007619
For people like me, traditional publishing just doesn't do the job. You've got to take minimum lots, like 200 copies of the book. The start-up cost is big. This way I have minimal start-up costs, but make less per book.

interesting, so it's like a hybrid of the two, then?
are you a full time photog?

Nope, it's a sideline. I'm a computer geek at a university, the rest of the time. I shoot regional racing and what National events are run in the Province of Ontario. I sell shots to the racers, use them in my book, and a few go to a Canadian online motorcycle magazine. Occasional promotional sales, to sponsors.
There's just no real money in the Canadian motorcycle racing scene, for photographers. If I was full time, I'd be shooting weddings.

Sweet. :dthumb: I made one for a final project in one of my photography classes.. if you pick the right company, they can make some pretty professional stuff.

The one that I did last year paid for itself, a copy for the friend who puts me up when I go to the track, another copy for my regular riding buddy, and a copy that went to the Racers' Safety Fund auction (which sold at auction for 75% more than it would have cost to just buy it). Oh, and a few bucks left over after that too. I said that if it at least covered its own costs I'd do it again, so I did :D

Awesome.
I love it when the photographers that go the distance get some payoff. I know how difficult it is....

Thanks. Now only if the clients knew. Hell, I had the people from one dirt racing group contact me, to see if I wanted to travel 100 Kms, to shoot their event and give them the pictures. They were generous enough to offer 'photo credit' for my time and trouble

Yup, both Trip and I said that. Both of those shots were framed exactly that way, straight from the camera ;)
I did crop a few shots for the book though, because they had to fit the page restrictions.

They were "... looking for a photographer to give us many great photos and videos to use for the website and advertising etc...." but "Unfortunately we are on a limited budget, this is the run this event and have a lot of expenses."
Well advertising is an expense. It's not free.
Thanks. It got a lot of notice. Fortunately no one else seems to have quite figured out the angle I use for shots like that one yet ;)

Limited budget and need a digital camera? Do they know Walmart sells cameras for $100 (sometimes less). Or do you guys have Walmarts? I know Carrefour sells them and for sure those french speaking quebecian bastards have one of those.
Should have gone and taken the pics. Then give them thumbnail size like this...

Judging by the pictures they published on their website, I think that a few of the organizers just walked around with pocket cameras. I went anyway, as a friend was competing, and took a few pictures like this:

The problem is that when they ask for full rights to the shots, for nothing, there's always someone around who will do it.

Generally, you get what you pay for.

This is true but if they can get something that's 'good enough' for nothing, rather than just plain 'good', they'll usually go for it.

It's out now. Of course I had to correct a spelling mistake before actually releasing it, that showed up in my proof copy. Dammit! Three people proof read the thing and we all missed it.

Nice!
Jodi's 'A' Bike (Last Page, #1 plate) is now sitting in my buddies garage. We all stood around it and revved it up a few times while drinking beer last weekend. It helps to pass the Winter

Wow, that's a long way for him to go for a bike sale! Jodi and his dad are good folk. His father was a a racer before he was, running in lightweight superbike.
There are almost 80 pages in the book, all told.

Yep. He made a little vacation out of it. Visited with Louie Raffa on the way.
He wanted a built bike that was proven to be competitive. He'll be racing the national circuit this year. He's also still sitting on Jordan Szoke's 08 6R. It may become his 'B' bike now.

Louie is a good guy too. He and Annie have bought a ton of my shots, over the years. His last poster was one of mine. He also rode my old FZ400 track bike in a race, at St. Eustache, after Ken McAdam of SOAR had rebuilt it and made it look pretty. That was a great bike.
