In a move to "promote greater unity" among its body and the Pike County community it serves, a small Kentucky church voted to ban interracial couples from membership and from participating in certain worship activities, Kentucky.com reports.
Though reminiscent of some Jim Crow-era mandate, the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church actually made the decision earlier this month, following a visit from 24-year-old Stella Harville, daughter of the church's secretary and clerk, and her 29-year-old fiance, Ticha Chikuni, a native of Zimbabwe.
According to Harville's father, Dean Harville, Stella brought Chikuni to the church in June where they performed a song for the congregation.
Following the visit, former pastor Melvin Thompson told Harville that his daughter and her fiance could not sing at the church again. Thompson later proposed that the church go on record saying that while all people were welcome to attend public worship services there, the church did not condone interracial marriage.
His proposal, which was accepted by a 9-6 vote last week, also suggested that married interracial couples be prohibited from becoming members and used in worship activities, except for funerals.
"It's not the spirit of the community in any way, shape or form," said Randy Johnson, president of the Pike County Ministerial Association, according to Kentucky.com.
While Pike County and the surrounding community come to grips with the church's decision, researchers at Ohio State University and Cornell University say black-white marriages in the United States are soaring, increasing threefold, from 3 percent in 1980 to 10.7 percent in 2008.

To-Nite we're going to party like it's 1929.

I refuse to recognize Kentucky as the South. Tennessee only half qualifies.

I like being ignorant too. Like right now, I am pretending that this is not real and also that Kentucky is a fake state.

My brother went on a college visit to a couple schools in kentucky. He came back and said it might as well be considered the south.

I drove thru Pike County 10-12 yrs ago.....it was a fucking joke.
All the kids were "cruising" back and forth in front of a Kmart. That's all there was to do in Pikeville.
I walked into an Arby's nearby, and they were selling t-shirts saying "I cruise the plaza" :lol
If you pull up Census data on average income and educational achievement, the southeastern quadrant of Kentucky is one of the bleakest places in the country. People living in corrugated tin roofed homes, and selling used hubcaps on the side of the road.

This is what Democracy looks like

I have no problem with it... If the majority doesn't want you there, your only reason for being there is to cause problems... It's not a government sponsored entity so they have the right to refuse anyone for any backwards bigoted reason they want...

I doubt their original intent was to cause problems...maybe they just wanted to go to church.
Also, I don't think anyone here was upset about the legality of the decision, just the stupidity.

I dunno... If the vote was taken in secret, then yeah, they probably weren't trying to cause any problems... If they knew about the vote beforehand, the writting is on the way... I mean, if something like that has to go to a vote... even if it ends up in your favor, it's not really a place you should want to be. Fuck that shit.
It just makes me think of those situations where it's a little more obvious... people aren't tolerant of me, so I'm going to force it down their throats...

Tell me exactly where my logic has failed? Our society is moving away from tolerance and moving towards forced acceptance... I may not like bitchy old ladies, but I'll tolerate them... Doesn't mean I should be forced to accept them...

Exactly. It's like somewhere along the way we went from "dont go where you're not wanted" to "i'll show them!"... It's one thing to do it for entertainment purposes.... Just to fuck with people.... It's another to do it out of spite.

I agree wholeheartedly.
To be fair though, from the way I read the OP, this rule didn't go into effect until after the couple had visited the church.
They didn't do anything out of spite. They showed up and were told not to come back.
Now, if they keep coming back...

They went to the church once together. It was probably at the recommendation of her father that is the church's clerk. The fiance played the piano and they sang together. They were asked to never sing again. Then the vote came out. They didn't take a STAND against the church and continue to go where not wanted.
Since when does a bigoted herd EVER consider logic?
