http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/envoy/isaf-u-spy-drone-iran-claims-brought-down-195224233.html

While the IRNA headline described the U.S. spy drone as having been "shot down," an Iranian military official quoted on Iranian state television claimed that an Iranian military cyber-warfare unit "managed to take over controls of the drone and bring it down," the Washington Post's Thomas Erdbrink noted. That latter account would seem to be more in line with the description given by ISAF of the spy drone operators having "lost control" of it in western Afghanistan last week.

The more I read about these, the more I think our engineers are fucking retarded.

Apparently it's real easy to get the video feed. Basically all you need a is a laptop and $25 program to see everything we can see on the drones......

All the insurgents figured this shit out quick and watch what we are up to....

Hahaha - used to be a bomber wing stationed here - my dad worked on them when he was an AF aircraft mechanic... Like 35 years ago. The same ones are probably still in service

There's AF folks here who can probably confirm both that as well as how much safety wire is holding the wings on :lol

B-52s are about the oldest airframe still in service, followed closely by the venerable C-130s (ours are all 63-65 models) and the BUFFs (Big Ugly Flying Fuckers) are planned on being around until approximately 2040. You might think they are held together with duct tape and baling wire but in reality, about the only things that are that old are the framing (tho someparts of the frame have been replaced multiple times) and the wiring (again some harnesses are replaced as additional components are added or subtractedto the systems). So in actuality, most parts of those aircraft are much newer than the year model date as they are replaced as they wear out or break, everything from fuses and eletrical buses to wing root boxes... major overhauls happen after so much time or so many flight hours. Other than a little external skin, some of the frame work and some electrical, about the only thing that is old is the regrsitration number...

My dad told me a story about watching a C-130 land without a tail in Vietnam - had mad respect for those planes.

I've heard a few about A-10's flying missing half a wing and another with only one engine... mind you not that it wasn't operational... it was FUCKING GONE. from a couple crew chiefs that worked on them in Korea... fuck'n crazy

Heard that from him as well - along with C-123's at the time.

Damn I loved those stories. He didn't tell 'em a lot and unfortunately, now he is gone.

Military aircraft have a long history of making it home, when they shouldn't be able to fly. In WWII the Lancaster Bombers came back with horrific damage.

B-17s made it home because they were pretty rugged
A B-24 would make it home out of sheer luck. Design not so rugged.

and the b-29 was able to fly higher than all the other planes anyway  b29 needed to operate at high alts because when the engines quit you needed the glide time to figure out how to get them running again
