I find at the ripe old age of 31, the thing I look forward to the most, the thing that motivates me day in and out, that gets me excited, like a christmas eve night kinda excited is road trips. *I don't know when this obsession with travel came about, maybe it's always been there. *I don't remember ever disliking travel, but I do remember when it wasn't a priority in my life like it is today. *These days I'll sacrifice nights out, eating out, to enjoy time on the road. *it's not that I've become reclusive, or that I'm trying to escape, no it's more about freedom. *Doing what I want, when I want, how I want. *As odd as this may sound, road trips are when I feel like an adult. *I'm able to choose when I sleep, when I eat, when I stop, when I push on. *I have come to realize that much of my daily life is controlled and I cater to someone else's opinion as to when I should sleep, eat, go, stay, say, think. *Now I know much of this is due to being in the Military, and I know I signed up for it. *I know that I could very easily get out and go about my life ideal, but see, I'm sacrificing even now for travel. *See my goal is in 10 or so years, I will retire from the military with full retirement and live off the pension, traveling the world. *To spend not days or even weeks on the road destine to come home and start work Monday morning, but to spend YEARS on the road. *I want to soak in the culture I'm traveling through, not just the touristy areas or "safe" spots. *I want to see the WORLD, in all it's terrifying glory.

This is what drew me to motorcycles. *See in a car, on a plane, a ship, train, or whatever you're isolated from the culture and environment you're traveling through. *On a bike, you are submersed for better or worse, in the world you're riding through. *If it's hot, you're hot, if it's cold, you're cold, if it stinks, you smell it. *While they may be considered inconveniences and undesirable features of being on a motorcycle, they are, required in my opinion to really say "you've been there". * I mean the point of these trips are for memories, so what's more memorable, looking back on driving through Colorado with the heater on full blast looking at snow? or Riding and picking icicles out of your eyebrows (ok so I have thick eyebrows).

I just want to see this world, from a point of view of MY choosing.

So I've purchased my 2nd current motorcycle and 4th over all. *A 2001 BMW F650GS Dakar.

I have been enamored with this bike since I saw how many people have taken it around the world while watching Horizon Unlimited's Achievable Dream series. *I looked heavily at several other bikes, but I always was drawn back to the Dakar. *It came down to the KLR650 or the F650GS. *I'd almost given up on finding a Dakar version as they seemed to be held onto by their owners. *As luck would have it I was doing a bit of "post whoring" on RDS and noticed a fellow member post something about think'n of selling his. *It wasn't an outright offer to sell, so I waited. *When I didn't see anything in a week or so, I messaged him asking about it. *Tracy was a dream to work with! *I didn't have the full amount upfront but was willing to take payments until I paid it off in February 2012. *I planned it so that I could pick it up after my little sister's wedding in late Feb.

Fast forward to November, and I maneuvered some of my assets around to pay off debt, and decided I was going to pay Tracy in full. * Also made the decision to fly into New Mexico (where the bike was stored) *before the wedding, and ride North. *I did this for two reasons: 1st and for most, I needed to title the bike in Oregon and it'd be much easier to do in person rather than via mail. 2nd *I was in dire need for a long road trip. *I had an ischemic stroke in late Jan 2011 which meant I spent the majority of 2011 in rehab mode. *I rode some, but compared to the 23,000 miles I racked up in 10, *the 5,000 I managed in 09 was disappointing and not at all thirst quenching. *3rd and finally, it had been a goal of mine to ride down the Oregon coast. *The Oregon coast has always been one of my top 5 places in the world (that I've experienced first hand). *Something about it just really makes me feel HOME. *I've not been there in 10+ years and I miss it terribly.

So I paid Tracy off and started planning my trip. *After countless hrs of planning routes, looking for "POI's" or Points of Interest, checking past year's weather for the time of year, and plotting "Plan A, B, and C" routes into my GPS, *I was set in early January! *Then while reading a thread on ADVrider.com
about a rider just kinda going out and wandering the US, I felt a sudden panic that I was spoiling a great opportunity. *After all, I don't get many chances to take leave in chunks like this (30 days) and what's the point of assigning a strict schedule to something that's supposed to be rehabilitative? *Seems almost counter productive.

So I wiped out my Routes, but kept the POI's. *My plan now is to "find" my way from POI to POI. *the only deadlines are to be in Portland on the 24rd of Feb for my sister's wedding and be at work on the 14th of March. *I still will ride down the Oregon Coast, Still plan on seeing some of the same area's, but with out the pressure of doing X amount of miles, or being X location at X time. *It'll be my first ever venture over a day with this plan. *I'm beyond excited!

Day: T-7
Like a kid with Disneyland in his future, I started packing months ago. *From day 1 of entering into the agreement with Tracy to buy the Dakar, I started setting things I knew I'd take with me aside. *Over the last two weeks I've really turned serious about it. *Packing, unpacking sorting, re-packing, and repeating. *Every motorcycle travler knows you always take too much stuff. *Lots of stuff means lots of weight on the bike, adding to the rider fatigue when off-road. *A general rule "they" say lay out your planned gear and take 2/3rds of it and toss it... you don't need it. *So applying this "rule" I've packed and unpacked several times.

As with many trip reports I've seen I've snapped a photo of my gear. *This serves two purposes, 1 to show YOU what I'm bringing, and 2 to show ME just how much shit I have. *Packing things has a way of shrinking the shear amount of crap you bring IN YOUR MIND. *Setting it all out where you can see it, you'll realize just how much you have and elmiminate any excess.

Not pictured are the Camera equipment (Nikon D300, 18-200mm Lens, 50mm lens, SB600 Flash, Remote shutter release, Manfroto Tripod,) 15" Macbook Pro, Lacy "rugged" 500gig external HDD, HID headlight kit, and LED fog lights. *Tripod, and lights are in the mail being shipped to me as I type.

I will not open the bags again until it's time to leave, save adding the lights and Tripod if they show up in time. *this will help me from forgetting anything.

1 week to go!

Day: T-1

Days are dragging, I have to force myself to stay up and not to try and go to bed at 1700 (5pm) just in an effort to make them pass quicker. *I don't have much work to be done, either at work or at home. *I've got my apartment setup for my departure, just need to finish the last set of laundry (I'll do Friday night) and dishes. *At work I accomplished the last of my work today, room inspections on all 90+ airmen done today, discipline to be handed out, and last minute training to be accomplished (so I'm not over due while I'm gone).

On the trip front of it, I had three items I was still waiting for. *The Tripod, Tripod head, and my HID lights. *well the first two were purchased from Bestbuy. *Apparently Bestbuy.com is starting to do things sort of like Amazon, where they sell things out of their own inventory or out of another companies. *My Tripod head was shipped directly from Bestbuy and left on the 2nd and showed timely status and arrived on the 8th. The tripod on the otherhand, was shipped from some place in New Jersey. *On the 2nd it said Status: pending shippment from warehouse. *on the 8th it said Status: pending shippment from the warehouse. *I got home on the 8th and found both items on my porch. *This morning, I got an e-mail from Bestbuy letting me know my Item was 'on it's way' and gave me a tracking number finally (click on it, shows delivered LOL) so all's well just a little annoying when you're wondering if things are going to make it or not.

Which brings me to my HID's. *Ordered on the 1st, I got an e-mail with a tracking number on the 3rd. *this tracking number shows invalid until on the 6th where it states Status: package prepared at origninating post. *then on the 8th it changes to *Status: Package accepted on 6 Feb. So at this point I'm starting to try and figure out what I need to do. *The package is being shiped partial post. *meaning it's being handled half by Fedex and delivered by USPS. *USPS only tries 3 times then returns the package, and with me being gone for 30days, coupled with the fact that they won't let anyone else pick it up, I'm S O L. *This AM I looked... Status: Arrived at New York 1400 8 Sep. *hey, wait... I might be able to get it... at Noon I checked Status: 0200 in Mobile AL 9 Feb. *Now I SHOULD be able to pick it up on Friday... IF they attempt delivory today... (the trucks don't get back until after the pickup window closes so if they attempt delivory on Friday I'm again... SOL).

At 1500 I check. *Status: 0900 Arrived at Gulfport MS... sweet now if it'll just make it on the truck. *Status: Attempted delivory, notice left 10am. *AWESOME! *I'll take a long lunch tomorrow and pick it up... good... I needed an excuse to get out of the damn Mardi Gras parade anyways! LOL

That's it... the last of my preperations, asided from picking it up, is complete. *Now, it's just get through this last day of work and try to fall asleep tomorrow night.

D-DAY... DAKAR DAY
0 hour... 0250. *My alarm goes off. *Of course I'd been rolling around all night sleepless with excitement.


Friday night a good buddy and planned future RTW trip partner Fred was in town and we went to dinner. *We shot the shit until about 2030(830pm), and I did the last little bit of organizing and crashed out. * I woke on the first note of reveille, yes that's my alarm. *Anyone who's ever been through basic should know why... nothing will get you going in from a dead sleep like reveille. * I got up and gave my apartment one last go over, un plugged my electronics (so they don't drive up my electric bill while I'm gone). *Took out my trash and stood waiting at the curb for my ride, a full 30 min early LOL. *We arrived in New Orleans at 0620 for my 0830 flight. *I checked in my bags, one at 47lbs and the other at 67... shit $120 for an extra bag and an over weight one... oh but wait... flash my ID and one look at my gorgeous mug and I'm told I can have 3 bags up to 70lbs for free... could have been the Active Duty status thing, but I think it was my stellar smile :D
1030 local time I land in Denver... and this is what greets me

Yeah, 10 degrees. *Ugh... who thought riding north in February was a good idea... all of a sudden I started thinking about heated underware to go under my heated vest! * I still held hope that west of the rockies the weather was warmer. * I was only supposed to be in Denver for 1hr... my flight to Farmington NM scheduled to depart at 1130hrs. This would put me in at 1256hrs acording to United, but due to a faulty master warning light, I departed at 1200hrs and arrived at 1330hrs.

The co-pilot's mother was sitting right in front of me, in the first row. *So he left the door open to the cockpit and actually talked to her via headsets the whole flight.

And that's when flying got interesting... this little plane moved 10' in all directions I swear... *didn't do well for my motion sickness, but it started on the decent so only had to make it to the ground... err I mean LAND on the ground. LOL

Finally on the ground, still sweating from my motion sickness, Chester, Tracy's brother in law, met me in the bagage claim area/waiting area. *Terrebly nice guy, all smiles and handshakes. *Right away the baggage claim shutters opened and every passanger's bag came out... well -2. *MY two. *DAMN, well getting upset won't solve anything, so I walked to the front and talked to the agent. *Looks as though another flight from Denver was due to leave at 1330. *He took my info and made some calls. *Chester took me into Farmington to get my hotel and feed me. *He gave me a tour of Farmington, which didn't take long, and we talked about shooting rifles and dirtbike riding, two seperate conversations lol.
Around 1430 we returned to the airport just in time to see the flight land. *the luggage cart gets pulled around the side and he struggles with getting the first bag off... MINE! *WHOOO HOOO... such a relief. *I'd already decided I wasn't gonna work on the bike today, I was exhausted, still feeling a little sick, and just wanted sleep. *Having my bags though made everything ok, knowing that it seemed it always took forever for anyone to get their bags when they were lost, from my friends and families experiences. *I found out they delayed the flight 30 mins just so that my bags would make it on, even though it wasn't even their(Great Lakes Airline) fault (United miss routed the bags apparently) *Chester took me back to the hotel to drop the bags off (got let in by room service... damn card not working), I pulled out my riding gear and set off for his place. *I felt like I was 4 years old again in the parking lot of Chucky Cheese's, it was everything I could do to wait until he stopped the truck before jumping out and going to my new bike.
There she sat on her center stand, primed and ready to go. *Plugged in and still charging the battery. *Chester loaned me some tools to allow me to remove Tracy's tank bag and mount the straps for the Wolfman Ranier bag. *I got it all done in about 5 min and threw on my suit, waived goodbye to Chester and his grandson and headed back to the hotel. *Now, I ment to find a good view and take some pictures, but I found it impossible to get off the bike save stopping for fuel. *Instead I rode around for a bit, then decided I'd better turn in for the night though my tiredness had vanished. *10 trips up and down the stairs later (damn room key's not working) they realized they had my room blocked and fixed the issue.
Now... it's off to bed. *Exhaustion has found me once again. *Night Ya'll.

This made me smile. I absolutely understand and as I sit here and it is 20 degrees outside, I'm perusing everything I can find on the internet planning several rides for this summer.

Day 1, supposed to be day 0, as I was going to just work on the bike after the delay caused by my bags being missplaced.

I went to bed knowing that I could sleep in and it wouldn't make much of a difference, as all I was going to do was wrench on the bike.* Got up at 0650, no idea why but I woke up before my 0700 alarm and just couldn't fall back asleep, so after about an hr of tossing and turning, I reluctantly got up.

I decided I was going to load up the bike with everything so that I could see how the bike handled and how I wanted to organize it.* I had some time to kill as I didn't want to show up at Chester's too early.

As you can see it had started to flurry a little bit, so I figured I'd go out and find some nice area's for pictures. LOL



Turns out by the time I got on the road, the roads of down town Farmington were white.* I pulled over and took these just outside Farmington.

I arrived at Chester's around 0900, and proceded to take the fairings off and get things set to install the new lights.* Now when I first ordered the lights I figured they were about 1.5" tall by maybe 3-4" wide... nope... 3" tall by 6" wide* and HEAVY.* The current bracket, while sturdy enough to hold them, wasn't wide enough to allow clearance.* So, they were scrapped, I'll try again in Portland to maybe fab up a new bracket or just say F it and put them on my truck.* Next was hardwiring my GPS.* this went on with no issue, other than me dropping screws like crazy.* This was the first time my left hand really caused me issues with it's lack of dexarity,* casuatly report, 1 bolt, 1 phillips bit.* Dunno where they dropped to, but they went unretreaved.* While I had the plastics off I attacked the issue with the heated grips, found they didn't work on my ride home last night.* I checked both the fuse and the wiring to the switch with no luck.* I stopped there as I didn't want to gut it to find the fault.* I will in Portland though, my hands FROZE today, more on this later though.* While I did that, Chester attacked the right fog light.* For some reason it only worked intermitantly.* It didn't work when I picked up the bike, but came on when I filled up.* Didn't work no matter what he did, but just as I left it came on (went back out after lunch and hasn't come back on since)* At this time I started to think, maybe I should just get on the road as the weather was cleaing up and the forcast for tomorrow was more snow.* So I opted to button everything back up and hit the road.

First, I had to return to the Hotel, check out, and after some deliberation, ship some of my clothes and extra crap to Portland.* I could have put it on the bike, but it'd have been just more useless weight (didn't need any of it till Portland)* Chester was nice enough to offer to ship it out Monday morning for me, so I ended up leaving him about half of one of my green "A" bags of crap to ship.* Mostly just clothes, but the fog lights and a few other odds and ends.

Before I get on the street, I needed food.* I couldn't NOT have Mexican in New Mexico, so off to Si Senor.* Man, 1200 on a Sunday and there was a 15 min wait... MUST be good.* The food didn't dissapoint, though spicier than I'm used to.* We ate and then parted ways.* I shook Chester's hand and thanked him several times for the hospitality and assistance.* I hope to connect with him again, in my experience, people of his quality of character are too few and far beween.



So off I head.* West to Shiprock, then North.* I wished I'd had a chance to snap a picture of Shiprock, but couldn't find a good place to pull off with a decent view.* It rose out of the flat landscape like I'd invisioned Mordor did in Middle Earth... yeah I pulled a geek reference, but I'm on a motorcycle, and odds are, you're not... so deal with it.* The weather was mostly just small flurries, but cold.* The Pinlock anti-fog insert in my helmet didn't work as advertised.* It kept certain area's from fogging up, but that was usually in front of one eye.* I had to stop about 4 times through out the day to take the helmet off and wipe down the inside of the visor to de-fog it so I could carry on.* Usually this worked for about 20-30 min depending on the weather.

Oddly enough the weather cleared up at the borders.

About 40 miles outside Moab a funny thing happened, I came over a hill and "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cocrane came on and the weather cleared up, warmed up and looked AWESOME.*

I ended up back on the main road for 35 or so miles headed into Moab.* The snow was so bad we were doing 30 in a 65.* I was getting some crazy looks riding by some of the cars and trucks (passed on the uphill sections, as they really caused visibility to drop with the drafts they kicked up)* Didn't bother try'n to get pictures as the sun had already set and it was dark out.

Think'n I'm gonna pass on the White Rim Trail, unfortunatly with the amount of Rain/Snow they've gotten here, the road will be too slick for this heavy beast(and my lack of riding skills)

After that I set my sights on Provo. The weather was going to shit so I twisted my right wrist and pressed on as long as I dared. But with the vanishing light and the increasing snow flurries, and the fact that I still had Soldiers Summet to go through, I stopped for the night here in Price UT.

When you get off at Exit 4 on I-80 to head to the Salt Flats, there's a gas station on the east side of the road north of I-80. There is a water hose on the back side of the station. Be sure you pull back there and hose off the bike reallllllllllllllllllly good if you end up going out on the salt.

(If it's in good enough condition, you really should. It is a spiritual experience being at the fastest place on earth.)

It was DAMN COLD. *The heated Vest was worth twice it's money through there. *Hands froze but not much could be done about that. The pass was actually short lived... only about 40 miles worth of COLD weather... then it was only... cold. Which won't be saved, spot doesn't keep a permanent record of your tracks, I think they clear them after a month. They go away. Spotwalla keeps your trips, my cali trip is still on my website. I think the Spot Adventures website will keep a log of trips, but the main Spot share site will not keep the track. Hell it might start deleting the tracks before you even get back to Mississippi.

Today was a tough day, hardest I've ever had on a motorcycle.* I knew it wasn't going to be easy when I looked outside. (first pic I got was once I loaded the bike)

in the end it took me 5hrs to go the 85miles from Elko to Owyahee.* I was EXHAUSTED.* The shear concentration it took to ride on that for that long was crippling.* The wind wouldn't allow me to ride under 20mph or it'd tip me over(almost lost it every time I stopped) but over 20 It'd push me sideways... and on ice that means you SLIDE.* like no shit SLIDE across the road.* It was everything I could do to keep from going off the road in the wide open area's where the wind was able to really wick it up.* I had to stop 3 times to thaw my fingers... (unziped my side zips on the Roadcrafter and sat on them for 5 mins LOL) and my toes were killing me.

I did have one surreal moment.* going through the canyon just before Mountain City, the road was clear (thank god) and I was doing as fast as I daired... when a Bald Eagle sored up to my left.* It shadowed me off to my left for 5 or 6 corners.* Every time I looked up, it would look down at me.* At that moment I honestly forgot all about the cold and the trip, the exhaustion and the ice.* All I could think of was how amazingly poetic this moement was, and at the same time I was heartbroken that I had no way of capturing the moment.

As quickly as he appeared, he left.* Welcoming back the cold, exhaustion, and ice.* I reached Owyahee at 1300, and stayed there for an hr.* I bought some of the toe warmer packets to thaw my toes... they're supposedly able to reach 100*F... but with a pair under my toes and a pair on top... I was just barely comfortable.... maybe next time I'll sandwich them between pairs of socks... (hope there is no next time though)

From there on the roads were mostly clear.* only a shady spot here and there... but the WIND kicked up something fierce.* even so... the lack of Ice made this portion enjoyable and really had me smiling in my helmet all day

Should have just off roaded during the icy road area!

Got up early and on the road by 0830 knowing that the route would be clear, and would be warmer than that I've dealt with for the last 4 days.... Well I THOUGHT. Made it about 30mins before I had to stop and warm up my hands. it was 17* in Ontario when I left. I stopped in the next town, Baker City, and bought some more toe warmers, and this time... some hand warmers. Grabbed some Subway and hit the road again at about quarter after 9. Just before I got on the bike, I got a text from my Dad telling me Cabbage Hil and the Blue Mountains require chains to be carried, and may require use. I wasn't too worried after yesterday morning, but the Law states if Chain's are required, motorcycles can't travel. I'll watch my mouth on this blog, but F*** that I'm not going back to just go around.
Turns out... I had nothing to worry about... the roads were completely clear.

The ad-hawk grip heaters worked well... so much so that I'm gonna keep a pack in my tool kit just in case (along with a set of toe warmers) my fingers still got cold... but with warm palms, all I needed to do was flex my fingers a bit, and they'd warm back up.

The ride was very un-eventful but filled with memories... The Ukiah exit, that leads to my favorite hunting grounds as a kid, Starkey. Pendleton, which has always been a favorite point along I84... no idea why, but it just really reminds me how close I am to home. The John Day and The Dalles Dams, (wanted to stop for pictures but was low on gas and wanted to Fuel up) The town of The Dalles, where my Dad went to High School and plans on retiring. Cascade Locks, and the Bridge of the Gods (though quite a bit smaller than I remember. Multnomah Falls, Crown Point. both of which I stopped to take pics, but the damn rain and fog had hit, and obscured any sight of it...

Back to the bike.

I was able to do the HID swap, after busting the housing. I looked up what a new part was... $300 from Ron Ayers... FUCK THAT. tried super glue but no luck... so JB Weld it is... works great!

Never did get get the time to figure out what was going on with the heated grips or the fog lights. As it ended up I just disconnected the fog lights all together.

I'll be hitting the road tomorrow, just gotta change the oil in the AM. It's a short day so I probably won't leave until around 11 or so.

I delayed it as much as I could... I hated leaving Portland. It is, and forever will be... my home. Try as I may, I never got a day to go take pictures around my city... save those captured with my own eyes, and stored in my mind.
I originally meant to leave on the 27th... I actually left on the 1st. Oh well... I've got time.

So I left on Thursday, and headed north west to Astoria. I wanted to follow hwy 101 from it's most northern point in Oregon. I decided to not take the fast route through WA, but did want to check Washington off my list.

Then it was on to the Goonie house... I was disappointed they didn't leave up all the defenses... but someone actually lives there...

Then it was up to the Astoria Column. The road up is the one from the movie where Brandon rides the pink girls bike down

From here... I started having big eletrical issues... the bike wouldn't start, and my GPS would only run on battery. Luckly Astoria is built on a hill side like San Francisco, so I had no problem bump starting it. I had my tools burried in my bag so I didn't feel like dig'n down, knowing it was gonna be a long process of trouble shooting. So I stopped in Seaside for the night and started the diagnosis process. Turns out first thing I checked, the battery terminals. the POS terminal screw had backed out a little allowing the POS feeds to move. I tightened them and was good to go in 15min start to finish. I'd wished I'd just busted open my tools and checked it before booking the room... but Ciest La Vie.
Yesterday I left around 8 and headed down the 101 to Cannon Beach. this is where a lot of the Goonies was shot. in fact many of the Astoria footage was blended with Cannon Beach, like the bike previously mentioned bike race down the hill.

From there it was down to Pacific City... the place I frequented after HS, as you could park/camp on the beach so party's a plenty. LOTS of pics here, dropped the bike twice in the sand... realized just how heavy she was... DAMN

I finished the night in Gold Beach... wanted to catch the sunset in Port Orford but missed it by 10 mins and it was blocked by fog anyways... I pressed on into the night to get to Gold Beach.

I rode through the Ave of the Giants, though I didn't stop for pictures. The ride was too much of a blast and I wanted to make it to my brothers before 8. As it was I had to by pass San Fran in order to make that deadline.

I spent Yesterday at my bro's relaxing and was planning on leaving today, however he talked me into stay'n another day and I think I'll be headed out to San Fran for those photos while he's at work.

So I decided to spend two days at my brothers, neither of which I ended up going to San Fran.* That'll have to wait until next trip, instead, I mailed off excess clothes, and my camping gear.* I haven't been in the mood to camp.* When I camp I like to end the day early, start a fire, and relax.* I just don't feel like shorting the riding that much.* As is, I haven't been covering much ground due to stopping for pictures.* The other thing I found was KOA's (I know not the ONLY place to camp, but nice as many have wifi and showers) are just as expensive as motel 6.*

The extra weight was wighing on my mind too. The bike has fallen over 4 times, and every time it's been to the kickstand side.* as is, when I get off the front tire slides a little more when the handlebars are turned.* Just doesn't seem stable, I know the lean is a well known issue, but didn't think it was THAT big an issue.* With my camping gear and everything I have to really watch to make sure it's not going to topple over. So I shipped off 40lbs of gear... which was everything in my black wolfman bag and my tripod.* Bike seems much happier, guess I just need to learn to pack lighter.

Anyways, yesterday I left Roseville, and headed to Yosemite National Park.* I followed 49 to 120, GREAT riding, lots of twisties, good pavement, little traffic.* The only problem was there were signs saying 120 was closed in Yosemite, with no access to the Valley floor.* I figured as with most detour's they'd have the Detour this way sign.* so I followed 120 looking for them... Nope.* Ended up at the Gate for Yosemite where I was turned around, told to back track 17 miles, and go an extra 45 miles out of the way.* Awesome.* I had left my brothers at 0930 expecting to be at Yosemitie by 1130ish.* I would have made it.* as was with the detour, I didn't arrive until after 1300 (1pm)* The roads were phenominal though... 49 and 140 are amazing.

it was after 5 when I left Yosemite, and I ended up staying the night in Fresno.* Tried uploading the photos from there, but the internet was insanely slow.

So, I'm days behind.* Just haven't been feeling like typing out my days as I know they were ending.* It's why I couldn't leave Portland, knowing from there on, I had less time ahead of me than I did behind. That the trip was ending real life had to start again.* Well... that's a half truth.* It also meant saying goodbye to my home and more importantly Family.*

It's funny, growing up I was't the greatest sibling growing up. Fighting, teasing, and just being a spoiled ass.* I guess being the oldest, I wanted to just wanted my distance but due to the fact that 5 years separated me from my baby brother, distance wasn't easy to come by.* As the years pass, I find that I want just the opposite.* I think it's in the fact that every time I see them now, so much has changed.* New jobs, homes, significant others, and interests.* Its killing me having my family grow older and not feeling like I'm a part.

Anyways… enough with the melodramatic, on to the report.

I left Fresno and planned on hitting Tucson.* Because of the extra days spent in Portland and Sacramento, I was worried about a time crunch and decided that I was just gonna slab it.* There wasn't anything in Southern California or Arizona that was a must see (Grand Canyon wasn't on the trip list this time)* The weather was awesome, about 75 the whole way… ended up stripping down to one layer top and bottom under my suit in Palm Springs (80* according to the bank sign) but the wind was a killer.* It caused me to end the day in Phoenix rather than Tucson. The next day I got up and rode into Texas.* I had toyed with doing an Iron butt (1000miles in under 24hrs… http://www.ironbutt.com) to Austin where I could stay with some friends, but just wasn't up to it… yet.* I decided on Fort Stockton but settled for Van Horn.* I again slabbed the trip as I was sure it was Saturday and I wanted to have a day to recover in Gulfport, before going back to work.* I did make one detour to Tombstone AZ, but arrived just after the last mock gun fight and didn't wanna kill 30 min waiting for the next.* I had a schedule to keep

The day was much colder than the day before, especially once I hit Texas.* The sun dropped and the speed limit rose to 80.* I had the heated vest on high for the first time since Idaho, and also for the first time I had problems with Aerostich suit.* The velcro on the chest wouldn't keep and so the wind would come in the gap above the chest zipper, freezing me.* I ended up using the RDS (http://www.ridedualsport.com) beanie to insulate where the zipper ends.* Worked like a dream. I got into Van Horn around 2000hr (8pm) and decided to crash out early, so I could start the day early.

I browsed the weather and 31 and Rain/Ice was the forcast all the way to Austin until around 12.* AWESOME... thought I left the ice and cold in the north.

Great pics on an Epic adventure. Just that last word, adventure, is always the case. Nothing ever works out as planned and it's about adapting the trip to make it a good one that makes it an adventure. Good for you man!!

I hear ya on the camping. If I'm trying to do some serious riding I'd prefer to just motel it. If I am going to camp off the bike I just want to do a "camping trip". I plan on doing both this summer.

Yeah, I am glad I didn't camp, especially since I don't sleep well camping, it was much easier just to grab a motel for the night. You save a ton of time for riding by skipping setting up/taking down camp. If you are alone, you miss out on half the fun of campfire and bullshiting anyway, unless you go campground and talk to people.

I hear you about the family issue. Seems like my family is splitting up as well, especially since I moved away from everyone. Since it's just me and Andrea, it seems like my immediate family has moved on from the close knit unit we once were, but both my bro andsis have kids, so they got their own thing going now. I got a feeling it won't be long before there is a little Trippy though. All of our local friends and family have been pregnant or are pregnant. So baby fever is starting up bad around here.

So it's been a while since I've posted here... I wished it was because I was doing soo much riding i didn't have the time... unfortunatly that's not the case.* I ended up in the hospital in August of 02 because someone slashed my valve stem while I ran into my office real quick and I went down slamming my helmet resulting in a severe concussion.* So I stopped riding to work... Then at the BUTT rally I wrecked and ended up in the hospital again with another severe concussion...* two months later I moved to Denver, Colorado, and though I had some good rides in the snow, I wasn't about to commute in it LOL.* So it wasn't until this weekend that the Dakar made it's first appearance this year in the mountains of Colorado.* I didn't do as much riding as I'd hoped, but i need to get used to long days in the saddle again, and I had prior engagements that cut one day short.

I did make a ride down to Pikes Peak on Saturday though.* Gorgeous day, so I stopped and took the obligatory photo of the Dakar

I was bummed to hear from the ranger that the road was paved all the way to the top, but once I got north of 11,000ft I was OK with it.* The winds picked up and with no guard rails... had me wondering if a concussion would be the least of my problems if I went down here.* I also noticed my confidence on the bike was not what it was... I was stiff and couldn't relax on the way up.* Not sure if it was because of my offs... or the time away from riding.* I made it to the top eventually and was astonished at how little effort it took for me to feel out of breath.* I'm in for a hell of a wake up in a couple weeks when I run the Mt Evans ascent (14 miles starting at 10k ft finish at 14k feet.)

Yesterday I took off planning on riding nearly 400 miles, something well within my comfort zone, or used to be.* I found I'm needing to ease myself back into long days, as my butt is the limiting factor.* Anyways... the day started off fantastic... got an earlier start so the weather was cooler.. but still in the 70's.* At the first gas stop I strapped by camera strap through the tank bag to hold it secure but still able me to take photos while riding.* Took some getting used to, and I need to work on holding the camera level, but as I'm shooting with my left hand and not taking my eyes off the road (except on a couple) I think out of 300+ shots I got 100 that were keepable... and about 20 that are worthy of showing.* Here are a few

Then it was back off road... I had planned on a couple off road stints, but this one wasn't planned.* My GPS routed me though and considering I'd come way down from where I saw snow last, I was ok with it.* I was still at 10k feet I'd later find... only got a couple photos before the road required both hands and complete attention (again my lack of confidence off road kicked in)

About 6 miles down the road I ran into snow, it went form a shady area here and there to covering the road in big 10' long areas... which I stupidly didn't scout before and pressed through... and finally to a section that was completely snow for at least 100yards (couldn't see any further due to corners).* so I tried turning around, only 1 the ground was like grease due to the run off from the melting snow, and I was on a hill... Note to self... when in a new area and slick conditions combine with elevation changes... SCOUT FIRST!* I got the bike turned around and started up the hill, but didn't make it far.* The first and biggest snow section stopped me solid.* I couldn't get traction with the tire or my feet to try and paddle.* I had just dropped the bike on it's side after losing my footing when a guy showed up on a Yamaha WR250 and helped me get the bike out... I'm not quite sure what I'd have done had he not shown up... HUGE WAKEUP call for me, SCOUT and don't even slightly push it when alone.

Anyways, this whole ordeal took about 2hrs out of my day and about 50% of my energy so I threw in the flag and rode home.* Thinking I'd hit up the rest of my planned trip Today (Memorial Day) however once I got home and threw some lube on the chain, I discovered my master link clip missing... so no riding till that's back (had a spare, but don't remember where I put it in the move)

anyways... hope you all enjoyed your days off as much as I did mine.

It wasn't all on this bike... the Stroke was on the DRZ and so was the concussion in Jan. Just hasn't been a great run as of late

Yeah 2012... I'll fix it. One of my Airmen down there... don't know who, pussy didn't have the balls to confront me in person... but I can't think of anything I did that would deserve putting my life at risk... but who knows... a co worker had his brake caliper come off while he was wheeling... turns out the brake line was stripped and the heads of the bolts too... someone loosened them with a pair of pliers or something.

If I am going to buy a water cooled, I need to rip someone off. Last time I went to see about trading for a newer ESA model they wanted me to pay $10000, I laughed and walked out.

Well... was it the chain? I've never had a problem with adjusting the chain on the DRZ (save the stock one that stretched like a rubber band) or the Dakar.

I run DID Xring 520's... got 8K out of the stock DRZ chain... sitting at 14k on the DID... The Dakar I put a new DID on it the day I picked it up... it's at 8k right now. Haven't had to adjust it yet. But I carry a can of chain lube with me and hit the chain every 200 miles or so... (probably should just invest in a scottoiler)

Today was not a good day, it began great, because I rode into work, however, I did not ride home... and any day that starts with me riding home, and ending with me riding shotgun in a tow truck... is not a good day...

I left work excited to be on the bike after a tough day dealing with pissed off leadership and just over all cranky people, whom apparently all got together and decided that I needed to join their ranks of the pissed off and chronically depressed.* NOT HAPPENING.... no way... not with my bike awaiting me in the parking lot.

I literally ran out the building, partly to avoid getting caught by a procrastinating negative Nancy, but also because I truly love to ride that much!* I get my helmet on as I'm running, start the motor, give my bike the once over for Tires, lights, etc... and get on and go... I'm out the parking lot, and move over to take a left at the next light... I've gathered a bit of speed in my excitement, but no worries, my brakes are new and in great shape.* So I step down smoothly on the rear brake and squeeze the front brake, and feel the deceleration and the ass end slide side to side a bit... huh, still not used to the SS brake line I had installed last week on the rear... I come to a hault and put my right foot down, it slips and I almost fall.* WTF?* I look down and my motor looks like someone's layed open an artery, as it's black blood gushes, litterally gushes with the heartbeat of the Dakar's thumper motor all over my leg, the engine and puddles on the asphault.* FUCK!* I hit the engine kill switch and push the bike through the intersection (not before almost being hit by a car running a red light... really who can't see a 6'3... 6'4" with helmet guy pushing a white bike in broad day light... Colorado drivers... that's who)

Anyways, I get to the side of the road and investigate... looks like the oil filter cover is loose... and my tools are all at home... DOUBLE FUCK.* I call a co-worker and she drives me to Advanced Auto to buy 3 quarts of oil (one maybe two to add now, and 1 to add to the one at home to change my oil and filter)* and the torx bits and driver needed to tighten the screws.* *$50 later... I'm out the door... ugh.* I get back to the bike and start to tighten the bolts... only they're already tight as hell... WTF?* ok, maybe the O ring busted or something... it was something else

Oh yeah, that broken all the way through... the only thing holding it together is the O ring... TRIPPLE FUCK... so I call Progressive and have them send out a tow truck through my insurance's roadside assistance.* then jump on the phone to BMW to order the part hoping to catch them before they close and get the part in tomorrow and still be able to ride this weekend... yeah... not so much.* I was able to reach them, however they didn't have the part in, and because BMW is doing a "system upgrade" tomorrow, you can't order parts, but the parts guy said he's gonna try getting the order in now to see if they can get it Saturday then call tomorrow AM to ensure it's on the truck... AWESOME,* BMW of Denver (http://www.bmwofdenver.com/) has top notch customer service... they're just as expensive as other BMW dealers, but they take care of their customers and that goes a long way with me (had multiple dealings with them, not just this issue)* so not a big deal, maybe lose out on half a day Saturday of riding.* I hang up and start surfing the web on my Samsung Galaxy Note2... (awesome phone btw... for those not intimidated by it's size)* and my phone rings... it's the parts guy... bad news... no dealer in the states stocks that part, so it's gotta be ordered from Germany... 3 week lead time.* FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK...

I tried the "wooo saaaaa" technique, but just got oil in my ear, which didn't help the calming effect, so it was somewhat less effective than it was on Martin Lawerence's character in Bad Boys... but I took a couple deep breaths and realized it's all out of my hands and honestly... with that last breath, all frustration and anger left... I didn't go down, I was safe, I had a tow truck coming, I had the part on order, I have other transportation, I was actually in a GOOD situation as far as things could go... and hey, this gives me time to sort out some minor things I wanted to fix on the bike anyways....

but I still feel like I need a drink ;-)

no... I've done the last service, and the last oil change was just before I moved here... I've put close to 800 miles on it since then... and there was no leak or seeping, just an all of a sudden gushing of oil. odd... but it may have been cracked for a while now and just finally let go, like my brain with my stroke LOL... not so worried about why now, just wanna get riding...

I'll hit up MOA and the Chain Gang (F650 site) to see if anyone has one.. didn't think about that. Thanks!

That could definitely be TIG welded and if not that, the JB Weld would probably work just to get you through and actually would probably last the life of the part. The key is to thoroughly clean the part and rough-up the area it will bond to. I once repaired a quarter-sized hole in the side of a 550 Maxim with JB and once it was sanded and polished, you couldn't tell it was ever there.
