View Full Version : VS buys another forum...

www.customfighters.com was just sold to Motorcycle.com, which is owned by Vertical Scope.

Motherfuckers. I liked that place.

Pity. At this point it takes me mere seconds, to recognize a Verticalscope forum. Laidlaw gives Canadians a bad name.

It's funny... it's ALL the same... always the same story...

VS comes in and there's a general announcement... little will change, going to benefit everyone, want to keep the community strong, blah blah blah... then they introduce a new mod - just to help out... this person seems ok enough...

That's where we are today...

Next step, the ads will come in... people will start being censored and banned... fucktons more ads will flood in... people will start to get super pissed and mass bannings will occur...

And if I have my way, a bunch of cool as motherfuckers will be assimilated to TWFix.

Papa_Complex
02-13-2012, 03:15 PM
As far as I know the mass bannings never happened at CF. Those of us, who had seen it before, sort of 'self banned.'

A local guy, who has what is likely the most successful motorcycle board in Canada, has turned them down multiple times.

OneSickPsycho
02-13-2012, 03:23 PM
Yeah, well maybe I got banned from TWF because I was posting 20,000x20,000 images and replaced most of my pictures in previous threads with paint picture that said something like 'fuck you VS... you suck a fucking fat dick' and had pictures of cocks ejaculating on the VS... fuckers.

Papa_Complex

I think fred and a few others realy went after the vs guy so they were the only ones who got banned. They realy screwed rez though. From what I had heard a year or 2 before the accident they offered him a lot of money and he turned it down. Then after the accident they came back with a real low ball offer because they knew he was in a bad situation. Thats what made this whole thing even worse IMO.

Funny tthing is a bunch of us still use the NY forum to organize rides and events. Outside of myself and one or 2 others most of them never ventured outside the NY forum so they kinda mised all the drama.

Ugh... it's sad watching this shit happen... there's a guy on there defending the whole thing... he's usually a guy who skewers people over shit, now he's defending the takeover... You know because the owners were promised that the community wouldn't be broken and the site would be run the same...

In other words, all the same fucking bullshit they tell people they are buying out... just before the run the place into the fucking ground.

That's the real piss off. It's all business to them, but the people they are preying upon are generally enthusiasts. Rez put heart and soul into the board, and his business. It hurt to walk, because it felt like walking out of he and Lorilye, but having seen it before I couldn't do anything else.

Funny tthing is a bunch of us still use the NY forum to organize rides and events. Outside of myself and one or 2 others most of them never ventured outside the NY forum so they kinda mised all the drama.

I've dropped by a few times, in the last year, and it looks like a ghost town in what were previously the two most active sub-forums.

That was my first thought.

I can't believe that that is still a viable business.

Like I said above, it's all business to them. If they weren't making money, they wouldn't do it. Verticalscope is all about targeted advertising. That's why the ads will always be there. Maybe they let you turn them off, but they still get you. If nothing else you're generating board traffic, that lets set prices based on hits.

Look at their website's brag sheet and it'll explain it all to you.

Yep, ip banned for life, I have since changed my ip, but my names are banned across every VS board that I was registered on. There were a few other derf's that got banned from other forums too after my little late night rant on stewie.

Yep, they branched out and did other motorsport forums too, snowmobiles, cars, etc...

Depends. The usual seems to be that they take the site over and then slowly alienate and lose the original members, then there's a downturn, followed by an upswing of new members. I don't know that the really popular sites ever get back to their original membership though.

And we sort of preemptively turned CF to shit, I think, before the ads and crap really started to kick in. I had given a fair bit to try and keep it afloat, when they were having trouble, but damned if I was going to pay a e-strip miner for membership.

Seemed a lot of the core members knew it was comming. I met up with zeos after a td at summit and told me it was comming in a few months. I too threw them soem money and tried to buy from tricktape when I could just becasue they were good people but that drunk driver realy fucked them up. I thein VS reputation preceeded them taking over and most of us were aware of what they were/did so took off and bashed them at the same time.

Anyone care to call her?

You guys could forward your resumes to her personal email at:[-----

And then give her a call at work,---- to make sure she received it.

Thanks. Just in case you were too late catching her at work, you could always give her a dingle at home, ----, and have a nice chat.

Also, mail her a thank you letter, for all that she's done for

Some of that got prety weird, soem bashed rez for doing it as a sell out move, not realizing how dire his situation was, and I think soem in some way wanted it to continue on as it had in the past.

Most of my friends came over here anyway and made soem cool new ones here too. I had the same mindset when SBN went down and CF was created. At the time I had no loyalty to rez or fred and was going to go where my friends went.

Likely the contract provides a gradual payment, rather than a lump sum, depending on a "nice, peaceful" transition. Think about it, if you were VS you wouldn't just pay Rez and then watch him shit on the forum. You would put it in the contract that he can't recruit away members, that he must not talk shit or reveal any confidential info, and that X number of mods must stay around for at least X amount of time. At least that's what I'd do if I were VS.

(If I wanted to be in the business of creating nothing, and leaching off others, of course).

Standard non compete and non disclosure. I doubt there was a whole lot other than that.

Yep Rez explained it to me when they first offered him the buyout, he would be required to participate on the forum for X number of months with a minimum number of posts by him a week. He would also not be allowed to open up another site that would be in competition with CF. he would also loose complete control over the forum. And then he turned it down. After that, stuff started to get bad and eventually he sold.

There were some folks who when the rumors of the VS buyout started that were talking about starting a forum to bring members to after the fall of CF, one of the sites that was floated (and possibly registered) was cafeforums.com , with the CF highlighted. What wound up happening instead is that a number of people had already been through a VS buyout split right away and migrated with their online social group elsewhere, here, sporttouring.net got a small influx, a few harley sites, some locality based forums, basically wherever.
