Any thoughts? Experiences? Thinking about getting them for the klr

They're very popular for the KLR. A buddy of mine loves them. I use Pirelli MT21s, but they don't make a 17" rear.

The main reason I like the MT21s is because the front tire tread isn't directional. The 606s are. So, as the front starts to wear unevenly, I flip it around. I can make one front outlast 2-3 rears doing that.
Some people still rotate the 606 front despite that, and say it works fine.

I like them in the dirt, (decent mud tire) but a little soft for the street.
They don't last (me) as long as the MT21's do.

I use one on the rear if I'm going to be doing much serious off-roading but, I always keep the Gripster up front. The D606 handles a lot better than you would think on the street! Somewhere I've got a pic of the wife and I at the Gap on a rear D606 hanging fairly well in the wet.
You will sound like a big 4-wheel drive with knobbies rolling down the road so, earplugs are a must! Great traction off-road!
