Unfortunately, there are many tinfoil hatters out there who credit Tesla for some pretty ridiculous stuff.....Flying saucers, death rays, mind readers, and like that article claims, "a tower near NYC that could have provided free wireless energy to the entire planet".......yeah right.

The concept works, but it's hard to make it efficient over longer distances.
Also, I'm not sure we'd be pleased with the effects of putting that much energy into our atmosphere.
