Upgrade to 4G now or lose unlimited when you upgrade to 4G later. Verizon is forcing all unlimited 3G users to tiered plans after this summer when they upgrade to 4G.

They are going to do the same thing with current 4G users... read an article about it yesterday...

Even if they keep their unlimited, their speed will get throttled after a certain amount. Also, any upgrade = new contract, which means after those 2 years they WILL lose unlimited.

How much data do you guys use that really warrants the unlimited?

I think I avg 2-3gb per month.. mostly just streaming audio. Edit - also forgot to mention that I use it for work and get about 1,000 emails a day btw work/personal emails.

I will however be ditching verizon somewhat because of this and mostly because I really want a Samsung Note.

Usually 2-3GB... However, I was hoping to ditch my shit at home and just use my phone as a hotspot.

I use about the same, but judging what I use now to determine what I need for LTE is useless. Choosing a capped amount now assumes nothing will change but speed, but that's not how it's going to work. Developers are going to make apps that are better able to utilize the faster speeds of LTE. They're going to naturally use more data to provide more content. The browsers will be able to pull higher quality data from web sites. General use of apps that work better by being able to stream more data will go up. As the technology becomes more widespread, it's just going to lead to higher data use. If I used something like Pandora or Netflix, it would take a minimal amount of time to blow through a capped data plan.

That's not how grandfathered worked in the past. If you reupped, you kept unlimited and if that is how they are going to play, I will just buy new phones without signing a new contract.

Didn't think of it that way. Glad my boss pays for my data. I wont have LTE for at least 3 yrs so I'm gonna go with the 3gb plan.

This sucks. We still dont have 4G in my area, although I was able to get it for about an hour on Monday morning, Im guessing Verizon was doing some kind of test. I use a little under 2GB/month on 3G but when Im in an area that has LTE I go through data a lot more quickly and would easily pass the cap.

I have a grandfathered 4G unlimited plan right now and if they try to force me into a tiered plan at my next upgrade Ill just buy my next phone without a contract. If they still try to eliminate my plan Ill probably jump ship to a carrier that still has unlimited, if there is one, or just downgrade to a dumb phone that doesnt need much data still on another carrier.

Ive had the same Verizon account since 2002 but I refuse to pay their ridiculous prices for data.

That buying a new phone and avoiding the contract sounds all well and good, but you pay a shitload more for the phone AND I'm sure there will be some additional throttling... IMHO, I doubt that will work out very well.

They are actually looking to reduce subsidizing phones or eliminate it like Europe does. Buying off contract pricing may be the way of the future here. You pay pretty much full price for phones in Europe, but you aren't contract locked like you are here. Verizon and AT&T are cumming themselves about going to this type of setup too.

Theyre already phasing out the early upgrade programs too. If a badass new phone comes out I dont mind paying full price for it if Im a long way from my upgrade date.

On a positive note, Comcast has decided to get rid of their data cap. http://blogs.marketwatch.com/thetell/2012/05/17/comcast-says-move-to-end-data-caps-not-tied-to-netflix-complaints/

Theirs was a "soft" cap, meaning going over $250 GB didnt automaticaly result in throttleing or extra charges but I think its a move in the right direction.

Ok, great, but in your scenario to beat the system, I don't think it's going to work out very well for you.

I already buy off contract and sell before the phone gets too old. I don't tend to lose all that much going from phone to phone. Unlocked phone market is pretty easy to work.

You stay unlimited and hope your phone stays working because they force you to upgrade if you get a 4g phone. Just like you can't a smartphone without a data plan.

I heard they like to suck cocks for quarters and give each other dirty handjobs in the alley.

There the biggest Company User wise in America and they just seem to fuck there customers over more and more every year with there phone plans.

ATT and Verizon must get there jollies off by axing longtime committed customers plans because they can.

They already make a shitton of money off texting rates that cost them pennies to run. Why do you think Verizon got all pissy about Iphone's new Imessage integration...Because it doesn't count towards peoples text messaging plans it uses data and it's a way for some people to save money by lowering or eliminating there texting plans completely. Same thing with the Apps out there that do the same thing. So someone who relys heavily on there Unlimited Data is goign to eventually get penalized because there trying to save themselves money in the longrun.

If they keep making these "bright" executive decisions there will be enough backlash from there customers that they will Falter. Just look at that Fee they tried to implement a few months back that they backed down on within a week because of the customer backlash from it.

They can do all that because they've had the best network for a long time. Verizon was proven the fastest in both 3G and 4G, per a nationwide test done by PC Magazine a few months ago. People always like to say "Well ATT or Sprint was faster for ME" but they are just talking about their particular neighborhood.

You can try a smaller, cheaper company like USCellular or whatever, but good luck with that if you travel/drive/ride all over the country and want a carrier that actually has decent coverage and doesn't drop calls every time you drive beyond the suburbs or walk into someone's house.

So clear this up for me a bit, i'm confused. I currently have a 3G Droid X that I bought 2 July's ago. They say that if you buy a device outright you can still have the unlimited plan. But if I buy a 4G phone, will I have to sign a 4G contract, effectively cancelling my unlimited???

Will the same happen if I, for example, buy a 4G device from Trip. If I go to activate it, will that need a 4G contract?

I dont think that has started yet. Verizon is going to be introducing shared data plans sometime soon and I think that is when theyll start ending unlimited data plans. Unless Im wrong, I think you can still upgrade and keep your plan for now.

When I bought my rezound online, I did the renew online too. It gave me the option to keep my unlimited plan. It was to the right of the rip-off 2gb/4gb/etc options.
