I surprisingly don't, have some reflective stickers on the bike though

I don't. I do my best to stay focused and pay attention to everyone around me. I've seen too many people wearing hi-viz get hit to believe it does any good.

One of my close friends is a huge proponent of hi-viz, to the point of painting his bike bright yellow, wearing a hi-viz yellow helmet and a hi-viz jacket . . . he was rear-ended last fall because they "didn't see him".

I just try to stay the hell out of the way.

Nope
Yellow Bike
Yellow Jacket with reflective lettering
I'm usually surrounded by bees so that tends to scare everyone else away.

Also helps that I don't ride during the week and I'm out riding while everyone else is still sleeping on weekends.

People don't "not see you" because they can't see you, they don't see you because they don't fucking look.

All the high-vis shit in the world isn't going to help that.

Agree with this 100%.
Question: Is it required for military riders? I live near an AF base, and I notice every single rider has some form of reflective gear on.

Yes, reflective is required for military.

I'm considering getting a mesh first gear jacket and will get day glo if I buy anything.

Plus, I think a lot of people assume they can't not be seen in high-vis gear, and they might get a false sense of security because of it.

I just wear black, and assume I'm invisible to everyone.

My Buell would set off car alarms two provinces away. It was almost obnoxiously loud. I sounded like a B-52 when I was cruising on the highway. I still had weekly near death experiences because I wasn't seen or heard. On a mainly white, basically straight piped, Buell.

The only way to be sure you won't get hit is to not ride motorcycles.

I'm sure there are things that help. But, when you're riding up the highway in your neon Aerostitch, with head light modulators, and strobes going off, are you REALLY enjoying yourself anymore?

I've taken to wearing hi-viz jackets, with black pants. It would seem that I am somewhat more visible, to some people, but that doesn't help with the people who don't bother to look, or just don't care about anyone else.

There is one decided advantage, though. I seem to be mistaken for a cop on occasion, as sometimes people seem to take my directions as orders. Perhaps it's because of the high use of hi-viz by European police agencies, or the recent pilot programme using such in Toronto?

I dont do day-glo but both of my jackets are mainly white. I think white is pretty visable in the type of riding I normally (or used to ) do. I tend to stay off major roads and highways and stick to back roads. Fuck black, that shit is hot this time of year....

Color of gear doesn't help them see you. They are looking for a box, not a color.

Ed, I was just at MotoLiberty today. Ordered a RevIt Tornado women's suit in the sand color ( white-ish). I'm just so done with black.

I have a leather suit, so does my husband. I also wear their gloves. Personally, I think they have incredible workmanship. It's a true Japanese manufacturer about a 1/2 step away from Kushitani. RS Taichi doesn't have their own cows.

Most of my instructors wear their suits too.

The jacket he posted, SUPER light weight without feeling flimsy.

That is the jacket I've been considering. After much deliberation over the silver or day-glo, I opted to burn people's retinas. Placed my order. Unfortunately, they're waiting to receive the jackets mid next week, so I likely won't get it for almost 2 weeks. Arrgh. However, they have silver in stock...considering just going with silver to get the jacket in less than a week...

I bought a red one years ago. It worked well in the 105 degree heat last week. The "armor" in the elbows, shoulders and back was laughable. I bought some hard plastic armor from ebay back in 2007.

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2225/firstgearmeshtex1.jpg

This picture shows the 1/16-inch thick foam on the left and the plastic armor I installed over the foam. I did this in the pockets for the elbows and shoulders.

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/6822/firstgearmeshtex2.jpg

This picture shows the back foam on the right and the flexible plastic armor I bought off ebay. The problem was that the plastic armor was too wide to fit in the pocket for the T-shaped foam.

http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/1630/firstgearmeshtex3.jpg

Solution: My wife sewed up a bigger pocket. But she had to place it exactly so the plastic armor fit the curvature of my back. She also put in a zipper instead of the stock velcro. I haven't crash-tested it, but it fits great.

I got them off ebay in 2007. The shoulder and elbow armor from one dealer, and the back plate from another. I typed "Body Armor" and got over 6,000 results on ebay. The I tried "replacement armor" and got this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOURMASTER-JACKET-REPLACEMENT-BACK-ARMOR-LARGE-BLACK-2Xl-4XL-/160830476485?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&hash=item25723e50c5&vxp=mtr. After working utility construction where I was required to wear yellow vests and EMS where I have to wear one while working wrecks I have concluded that high visibility stuff is just to make it easier to find the body.

What I've considered though I don't know the legality of it is putting some bicycle leds on a couple spots on my bike. Specifically the front of the bike. I use a ton of them on my commuter bicycle and even in Atlanta cars move over a mile back to avoid me.

But high viz stuff can't hurt.

BTW, I wore my husband's suit in the same color to Sturgis and back last year. Tons of bugs/road crap/other crap onto that suit from 12 days of riding. Took the armor out, tossed it into the washer after spot treating and BAM clean.

I did the same thing after my 10 day ride a week ago. Any road grime came right off. It is brilliant material. And, if how it comes clean is any sign of how it would take a slide...

All textile, no leather.

This one seems to be perfect for Texas riding. It's a mesh without being what I refer to as a "throw away" jacket. You know, a mesh that would probably hold up [meh] ok in a slide but wouldn't do much more than that. The liner is pretty spectacular, but I have to pull over and put the liners in at the threat of rain. I can't just zip a few zippers and keep riding like my husband's suit.
